I had a question regarding Nanowrimo. Is there any group formed?
I was thinking about creating a threat similar to this but focused on Nanowrimo, plans for the month, word accounting, support and Nano memes…

This is a great idea. I managed NaNo the first year I tried it and then failed every other time due to already having some big writing project in the way. (This year would be no exception for me, but I’m sure there’ll be other people who would be encouraged to write if you made a thread.)
Please do make one! It would be fun. I am drafting Honor Bound this month so might use it as a NaNo project
I’ve spent the past two days working on my short story for my work competition. Its currently at 3,432 words long (max count has to be 6,000 words). Really enjoying working on this concept even though it required a plot rewrite because of a planned twist.
The mentor character was meant to be revealed to be a ghost. Having been killed just prior to the story and the protagonist not realising. But when I got to the twist reveal I kept thinking of sixth sense and it made me dislike it.
Now I’ve caught up on the rewrite and am now writing new scenes. Been writing it in past tense. But I am starting to consider whether I should switch it to present tense.
So here is a question are short stories better in past or present tense?
Personally I think and have better scores with present tenses. Not only that feedback was worse in past tense. There is in fact noticeable difference between both tenses rating.
Maybe It has to do in part that I suppose to have improved my English language with years, but there is correlation
I think it depends on the story and what feels right to you (which isn’t a very helpful answer I know! but I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer).
I agree with Hannah, I don’t think past or present is inherently better based on length. I personally lean towards past tense for third person, but present can work too.
Currently for myself, I’ve been making excellent progress on the new first chapter of my project; I’ve actually nearly overtaken the word count I originally reached, and it feels a lot more dynamic and interesting.
I did find myself bogged down in a rather lengthy tree that I haven’t actually completed yet; I wound up moving ahead because it was grinding me down plugging at the same exact tree day after day. Moving past that set of branches was a massive help and I managed to exceed my target for the day.
I’m not totally certain of how I’m handling branches at the moment. I want them to feel decently dynamic, with different factors causing different variations, but even when sticking to only two or three different permutations, the increase in size and work feels overwhelming and I start losing track of my organisation.
Like, I’m trying to avoid it ballooning, it’s a tree with three starting options that each have two subsequent options with varying outcomes, and then I made sure to put each outcome back into the same ending point, so the narrative progresses in the same way, but it’s just so much.
I’m not sure whether I need to pursue one branch completely to the end and then return to the top of the tree or change my organisational methods. I like having reactivity but I don’t want to burn out. Maybe I need to plan ahead a bit better to reuse labels within the tree; I did catch a couple outcomes ending up with me rewriting very similar events, and made an effort to redirect to labels instead.
Sorry little rambly. I’m a think talker ^^
Ok, as I won’t have much time tomorrow, I’m going to write now this month report.
I am not totally sure on this, but I was able to set mine to GBP £ so I would hope that you can.
Seems like it should, but I have no personal experience.
A thread would be fun!
I don’t expect November to be as crazy as October in the ‘real life stuff that needs doing’ department, but there’s some things leftover from that month that still need to be done, so not sure if I can participate. I love reading about other people’s progress, though.
Congratulations to @quartz for ending Mirrors of Theseus! Great job
Hey guys just a little question.
How exactly does the process work after you complete a game? Do you send the files to a mod or something and they convert it into an app?
Might be a dumb question to ask, but one I’m certainly interested in knowing.
Its on the main site under the hosted games application process. Everything you need to know is broken down there.
The submission process is found here:
The art assets required and other details are on that linked page.
Ah I see. Thanks!
My end of month update:
Submitted my stuff for the Bare Bones Jam.
The Maverick profiles are in a separate text document as a feelie.
Did my reviews for IFComp 2023 entries. Originally planned to finish after the choice-based ones. Since there was no way I could tackle most of the parser ones. By the end of the month, over 90% of all entries have been reviewed. Considering this is the first time I’m doing this, this is very impressive. The feedback has also been surprisingly positive and accommodating! The IF Community is very helpful in doing so!
Happy Halloween and see you next month!
Attempting to get Raishall finished. Does anyone else leave that one scene they’re having trouble with until last to come back to? It’s been taking me ages
I am feeling in less of a funk now that it’s the end of the month. I did some really nice social and relaxing things and have been reading a lot.
It was a good move to change my October plans, as I’ve been able to do both these things in the end (I don’t think I’d have been able to do Chapter 6 with the time/energy I had). I’ve drafted and revised the Royal Affairs extra epilogue, indulged myself thinking a bit about a potential maybe-to-do-one-day idea about a hedonistic romance romp, and did some planning on an unrelated/unannounced project.
Chapter 6 was as tricky a proposition as I anticipated, but I sat down with @FayI to air my various issues with it and as usual she managed to help me figure out what the real problems were and how to fix them. I always run into this sort of thing in the middle of a project, where I don’t have the ease and momentum of the start, nor the end-of-a-rollercoaster speedy feel of the end. But this chapter is now in good shape! I am keen to jump into writing Chapter 6, but really what I need to do is check where I’m at with game balance so I’m going to do that today, see how far I get, and then probably get on with the writing tomorrow.
Today is deadline day for my Jam and I am a bit nervous. That I am preparing the Nanowrimo support group I have a logo.
Happy to start a Nanowrimo group this year!
