While the copy edit is underway, I’ve tried putting together a draft list of thankyous. Below you can see the section I’ve written for CoG forum members, divided roughly into three categories based on how much people’s feedback and participation shaped the final game.
- If I’ve left you out, I apologize! Please PM me and let me know about it.
- If you think I put you in the wrong category, I apologize. Please PM me and let me know.
- I’m generally using forum names in the thank you section. If you’d rather I used a different name, including your real-life legal one… please PM me and let me know. EDIT: Per Jason’s email below, please send me your real name for purposes of game credits.
- Where I’ve remembered a particular idea of significance that someone contributed to XoR, I’ve added it to the thanks. For several of the most active and valuable members of the XoR community, though (e.g. Lys, Norilinde, Sneaks) I’ve struggled to think of one outstanding idea with their name on it, even though their feedback and participation have been rich and frequent. Or if I did think of a specific thing they recommended, it felt a bit too small to do justice to their contribution. Skimming through the whole thread, I’ve probably missed a whole lot of trees for the forest… Anyway, if I didn’t add a specific thing to your name and you can think of something I clearly should have? Please remind me by PM.
And thank you again - thank you all so much.
Acknowledgments (CoG section)
Readers to whom I owe a particularly massive debt include:
Adam Strong-Morse – for suggesting early on that the MC should really be able to practice Theurgy in Game I.
FairyGodfeather – especially for that early challenge to make them care more about the helots
Fiogan – especially for helping me shape the ace paths through the game
Dashingdon – for rescuing me from the demise of Dropbox
Dominic – especially for delving into Ch 2 code at its worst and most opaque
idonotlikeusernames – for inspiring many of the most in-depth ruminations on gameworld politics by steadfastly asking and answering “What would Mao do?” And for horse-eating, and an excellent typo.
Tea Noble – for enriching the game with dozens of things I didn’t know about, from protein poisoning to mule wrangling to flame retardant wool to the ease of catching one’s own arm in a bowstring.
Winterhawk – for typo hunting and stat testing above and beyond the call of duty, and puns beyond the pale of humanity.
For major advice, review, and/or engagement with the game and the world over a lengthy period, my thanks go out to:
cascat07 – especially for suggesting the Owlscap protection racket, and for helpful feedback on tactics
Drazen – notably for inspiring the arrogant noble path through Ch 1
Golgot – especially for the Vergina Sun
Iello – especially for advice on decent-sounding Greek
Mara – especially for constant feedback on the “57 guys and ten rusty maces” path, and the unappeal of Breden, and sincerity/lying, and poison
Mirabella – especially for early feedback on the ace choices
mreed – especially for improvements to the structure of the world index
P_Tigras – for all the things you convinced me to change, and all the good debates over the things I didn’t
Rebelmaiden – especially for inspiring Hector as love interest
stsword – especially for inspiring the “discreet Theurge” path
WulfyK – for the worldbuilding interrogations, etymological wrangling, and cultural speculation, and for suggesting delegation to deputy as a Ch 2 option
For helpful feedback on e.g. typos, coding and continuity errors:
