It feels odd reading a IF novel about my ethnicity. I just remembered why I tend to stay away from Western media about Japan.
This is very well done, though. I disagree with the person who said it felt weebish (thank you for teaching me a word!). One point of contention: when you include Japanese words, italicize them. It reduces the slightly jarring effect it may have.
@indykatya
yes yes!! thankyou! italicizing them would make it feel a lot less… well, yh, weebish. that way you can separate them from the english parts and yet still integrate them into character speech
i think the overuse of baka early on a lot sounds a bit weird, personally
The word baka has been used since the fourteenth or fifteenth century, I believe, so its usage is not historically inaccurate. I imagine it sounds odd because it’s been overused in animes and the like. I think bakamono would suit the tone of the story better?
@alliebee
Yep, I plan to have Masami/Masashi change throughout the series based on your choices.
@flowersloveoranges
I love Moribito, and Balsa is definitely in my head when I imagine a protective version of the MC. To anyone who hasn’t watched the show, it’s one of the best and (unfortunately rare) depictions of a mature and capable woman you’ll ever find in anime. Highly recommend giving it a watch.
@AngelOfTheBroken
I’m glad you’re liking it so much. Can’t wait to see what you’ll be rambling about once you read the whole thing!
@indykatya
Keep in mind that the target demographic doesn’t know Japanese. The non-expletive foreign words are fairly well-explained when they’re introduced. I do apologize for the inevitable awkwardness any Japanese (or Wapanese, for that matter) person might have reading bits and pieces of their language butchered about. But it is used for flavor in a fictional Japanese setting, and I make no attempt at historical or grammatical accuracy.
I reserve italics for emphasized words in dialogue and to denote thoughts.
I disagree that italics should be reserved for emphasis or thoughts - stylistically, any foreign word in a language different from the main text should be italicized. Of course, it’s your game, and you’re certainly free to do whatever you want.
Are you shooting for accuracy here? I may be wrong about this, but at the beginning, when the man asks you to join him as “a great honor”, I’m pretty sure Ronin were seen as an absolute disgrace, not honorable figures.
But the Oyamas waned to make the Akiyamas think that the MC as a proper Samurai in their service.
It’s explained in the game, including the mention that ronins are considered “dirty”:
The scheme was to dress up a dirty ronin and pass him off as a semi-respectable retainer. A family without powerful hereditary ties, yet has a samurai in their personal employ? That meant wealth, and lots of it.
Lemme’ just say that I’ve never ever had the money to buy that one.
Now, onto the actual review.
Goddamn, that felt fuckin’ awesome.
I balanced chopsticks on my katana, aided a whole troupe of ninja without even knowing it, threw someone’s grandfather and practically made him eat his insides, met the emperor and replayed just once to change into a busty lesbian pervert samurai.
Now, after replaying a few more times, I noticed some things that I should have noticed on my first play-through, and in all my play-throughs my charge is a girl.
It went something like this.
The girl’s flat
The girl’s ‘pure’
The girl says ‘baka’, which, though I’m pretty most of you know, means idiot.
She hangs out with a bodyguard who she acts like she doesn’t like, and constantly threatens to fire him/her and continuously gets angry at him.
After gathering this information (after playing the pervert one too many times), I come to the only logical conclusion most anime fans would agree on.
The demo was great I can’t wait for more, I hope you get a rival that can match the player in sword skill and such and maybe be come allies later on. Anyway I can’t wait for more
Loving what I’ve seen so far, getting a major Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai Champloo vibe from it, so much I made Kenshin, Mugen, and Jin types from my walkthroughs so far. Can’t wait for more!
