October 2024's Writer Support Thread

Welcome all to the support thread for October 2024.

:spiral_calendar:

:birthday: Happy Birthday to October babies.

:mega: Last month’s thread was hopping, thank you, everyone who continues to participate in these threads – it helps others when you do participate, sometimes more than you think.

It is wonderful to share everyone’s journey during the month; both highs and lows help each one of us realize that we are not alone in our journey.

This month @poison_mara has something special going on: The Halloween Jam

If you have time, there will be authors looking for feedback here:

:jack_o_lantern: :mage: :candy:

Speaking of authors looking for feedback, the following authors have a need for feedback:

If you are in need of feedback and would like to be added to this month’s list (or next month’s), please tag me and let me know.

Finally, my personal goals for October: It is the same as it has been for a while; to continue my reworking of the Patchwerks project based on the feedback I received.

My October goal is the same as my September goal, which is to finish proofreading Skies over Steelthorne.

New month, new slate. Though perhaps not precisely a ‘clean’ one.

I have new project goals to add to things this time, but I’m keeping them very small because, well, Blood of the Living is my main focus and will be until it’s done.

  • Try for another 35k on Blood.
  • Refresh myself on basic CSS for a maybe-Twine game, maybe get a layout going

It’s actually been nice to have a new project to noodle about with; I find that on days where I work with both, I make more progress on the main one than I do when I just have to focus on that. To be fair, that probably correlates with just good/bad days for writing in general, but still. Something about stretching my brain around a new thing limbers it up, maybe.

Anyhow, I hope everyone has a fun (and productive, if you’re aiming for that) October, and good luck to all the Halloween Jam participants!

Thanks for making this thread!

My goal is just working on the Peninsula Campaign. Would like to get the first battle written this month.

Gonna keep my goals very simple, as they honestly need to be because there’s only so much I can handle, and it comes down to two things: 1) work on my Halloween Jam entry, and 2) find my notebook. I’m definitely gonna be working on my other projects a little bit, just whenever I feel like adding something to my project notes, but yeah, the focus is on Halloween Jam now. And getting through life. And hopefully, maybe, finding that notebook. (In other words, I need to clean up my desk area. Got started on that today, actually—sorted the flyers from last week’s mail, and organized the receipts I had lying around haphazardly. I’m sure it’ll turn up.) Maybe I can consider adding some actual structure, some comprehensive steps to the Halloween Jam goal, but for now, nah.

Thank you for this and thank you for your hard work with these threads

I have already given feedback to Peninsula and Leas, so I’ll scratch that off my list. For Dawn of Heroes… if the writer is currently working on more edits, I will wait for that to be done before jumping in. That leaves Guardian of Time, and I’ll see if I can take a look this weekend or the next.

Come to think of it, the HG publishing queue looks really full now. The release calendar is filled all the way to Feb next year. And off the top of my head, I know of at least four games which have just been submitted to HG or are on track for a submission soon.

It’s now release month for Lily Adventuresses! Episode 1. The RPG’s now 99% complete, only awaiting potential play testers before its October 15 release date. Furthermore, I’ve just announced Episode 2, more specifically, its prologue, which will be made for Ludum Dare 56 this weekend.

So I’m fairly new, but sure, I’ll take some accountability if you’re offering.

Last month I only wrote about 10k (estimated, as I write by hand), but in my defense I started it with no setting, premise or characters and the last week’s been kind of rough on the personal front.

I want to at least double that number this go around. I’d settle for triple too.

My biggest challenge atm is preventing the story from going epic. I think it works much better as a nice, self-contained story on some remote rock, but the brain keeps throwing up new lore for me to ignore.

Also I need to seriously cut back on dad jokes (and rhymes!) but, you know, let’s keep things realistic…

So, I needed to charge my laptop that I don’t really use anymore, and I found my notebook underneath it! Surprisingly quick success. I guess now I can turn the “find notebook” goal into a “write in notebook… maybe?” goal.

Do you, though?

Well, he barely ever laughs :frowning:

Grats on the hidden notebook achievement!

I sent my full draft of Honor Bound to Abby yesterday and it’s pencilled in to be coming out at the start of December!

I’m really pleased with it, and the fact that it’s done. It took around 19 months to write (give or take… maybe a month or two away from it to work on Elite Status and other projects), and is almost 600,000 words long, which is absolutely wild to me. I wrote a post on the WIP thread about it which may be of interest!

I’ve been listening to the Disco Elysium soundtrack obsessively while revising the draft, so it’ll be rather nice to have a break from that

My first October goal is to send off my cheats/hints/guides file - which is nearly done, I just need to check that the achievement guides are still actually accurate, as I wrote them some time ago before my revisions.

My second goal is to write up formal concept paragraphs for what I’d like to make next.

My third goal is to see if I can reliably squat with 70kg by the end of the month… I started with 20kg at the start of June so am excited to see what I can do in October  More generally, I want to spend time outdoors and/or get to my personal training group whenever I can because the SAD energy dip is kicking in and it’s very cold, grey and rainy in my part of the world right now.

Oh! Fourth silly goal… restart Pathologic 2 and see if I can survive to the end (I probably won’t)

I posted my monthly WIP/release digest yesterday, but have added some since that I’d left off, so do take a look over here!

This is my first full month after my birthday. As such, I am resolving to have at least a chapter or two written and coded by end of year. I have to prove to myself I can do it. I see the way forward, clearly. I look beyond the ephemeral. I see the nature of things, their reasons for being… Sure, it may feel like I’m in an eternal roguelike, but level one, game on.

Thanks as always for the thread and for the mention @Eiwynn!

I’m trying to take it easy this month - focusing on putting together some game resources and wrapping up my jam entry. Good luck to everyone with their goals!

Made my 10k goal, although I wrote fully 1,900 of them on the last day.

By the end of this month, I will have the chapters that will make up the part of the story before the payment cut done. I am wondering if that is a good time to stop and figure out some kind of way to make the demo playable. I really need feedback for Grandparenting. I know it’s substandard and want to be able to improve it. That being said, I am at least enjoying the writing a bit more now that I introduced the opposing grandparents. Fun to write for bad people.

Goal is the same as usual, 10k words. Still torn about whether I want to try for a semi-NaNoWriMo next month like I did with TPS, where I wrote 25,000 words in November of 2018. My life is a lot different than it was at that time. So is my brain, I’m afraid.

Happy October!! It’ll take all month, but it will eventually cool tf off in my neck of the woods! And my partner and I have a Spooky Movie Marathon all month where we watch scary stuff (and also not scary but fall themed things like Over the Garden Wall) all month and it’s one of my favorite things! :two_hearts: So this month my aims are:

  • 20k words (5k/wk); really pushing myself on this one
  • I really, really want to finish this WiP chapter why am I so sloooooow
  • I’m gonna try to finish this Halloween Jam entry. I am honestly not optimistic about that happening but I’m just gonna summon my inner anime protagonist and try anyway
  • I’m gonna give feedback on one (or two) of the projects in the OP

Good luck everybody! :two_hearts: :jack_o_lantern:

Hey, that’s a lot! Congrats.

I have so many questions.

Congrats, but also… I don’t understand that turn of phrase about pencils.

Here’s hoping I can get my entry done! (I have other things to do as well, after all.)

Oh, heh. “Pencilled in” is that something’s planned but not necessarily completely definite - writing something in your diary in pencil rather than pen, so that it can be changed if needed.

Oh, I’d have imagined it more as the pencils for a drawing, before inking.

(Also I wrote a thing in my calendar in the wrong month. With a fountain pen. Argh.)

If someone want to do a speed snippet day I can planned it.

It is simply put an hour and all people participating start and write that hour then we all shared our good and bad and feedback I found those events really encouraging also they are in pm so people that is shy dont have to be in public.

Anyone also who wants my feedback my advice or simply “Eh, Mara I am bored do you want read my snippet or write with me.”

That is my job as Hostess and I found it really fun.
