October 2024's Writer Support Thread

Long answer: I brought my laptop with me to Spain in hopes that I could use it to watch movies on Skype with my little sibling-friend (epic laggy failure so I ended up using my friend’s laptop instead), and when I came back home and cleared my luggage, I simply stacked a flat box of gifts for my sibling-friend and my laptop on the desk in my room… right on top of that notebook.

Short answer: I am a disorganized mess. :sparkles::point_right::point_right:

My goal for the month is just one: write 50,000 words (whether that completes Chapter 1 of Deux à Deux or not) incl. code.

Hello fellow writers! Happy October.

My goals for this month are:

  1. Add 30k words to Guardian of Time chapter 3
  2. Design a map for my fantasy setting that I can include in my game and share on my Tumblr.

My stretch goal is to complete all of the minor things on my October ToDo list that mostly exist to make me feel better. A former roommate of mine is getting married next week, so I’ll be taking some time off to help her out. Knowing this, I won’t be terribly upset if I don’t meet this goal. It’s a stretch goal for a reason.

Thank you @Eiwynn for including me in the opening post! Also if anyone is considering giving me feedback (I deeply appreciate you!), my project is gender locked to a female MC, so if that makes you uncomfortable, a different writer might benefit more from your time.

Happy October all and happy 100th birthday to Jimmy Carter!

My only major goal this month: submit The People’s House for publishing! The editing process has been going along pretty great so far thanks to a lot of incredibly helpful feedback and I’ve finally got artwork coming soon. Hoping to finish up all changes and small additions by the middle of this week so that I can just focus on polishing.

I still haven’t actually played through my own story in about a year and a half, so the plan is to get that done sometime early this month :eyes:

I suggest doing this as much as possible, especially what you consider the least chosen path. It is my experience you will find something to change/fix/update on every pass you complete of your own work.

Goals for October: 30,000 words, update wip, and try not to eat all the Halloween candy before Halloween. :persevere:

Good luck in the Jam every one, have fun!

My October goal is to have the first draft of Chapter One of Season Three of UnNatural done in time for Halloween, and also start brainstorming ideas for the cover as for once I’ve no idea.

For Season One, I went with a female protagonist with Azure powers so it was obvious to me that Season Two, should be a male protagonist with Shade powers. But I have no idea what to do for Season Three.

I am, for some reason, wasting time sketching act cover images for my jam entry instead of, you know, writing it, or drawing the images I have way earlier deadline for, for that matter. (And I don’t even have any idea for the third act cover, nor do I think using them is sensible anyway.)

I’d probably go for either an image with both a male protagonist with Azure powers and a female protagonist with shade powers (or a non-binary protagonist who’s half shown with Azure and half shown with Shade powers, though that could lead to people assuming there’s a way to do both in a single playthrough), an image of the mother (depends on where you are going with season 3 and what role she plays in it) in her maximum-winged Azure glory, or an image featuring an important character or monster from season 3.

Edit: Or the primordial god creature I forgot the name of, though I assume that wouldn’t be a very detailed depiction.

I think having a non-binary character would be a good option if I can decide what to do with the powers (or possibly make one of the new planned important characters non-binary and the cover star).

The mother I’m unsure as I don’t want to cement an image which might go against the reader.

With Xenom you’re right about the lack of a detailed depiction as they are formless.

EDIT: Well, that was a good start. I started writing the opening, and I felt a little deja vue, so I double-checked my stuff and found an older project I had touched on for a couple of years, which was initially for a different coding system. I had written a very similar scene so I’ve subconsciously copied my younger self…Going over the older project, it’s about 25k words so far, and I think it’s got promise, so I’m going to come up with a new opening scene for Season Three and keep the smashing window for the original project.

Hi, all! Just popping in to cheer everyone on. Sounds like lots of excellent work happening and milestones being met for many.

@HarrisPS congrats on going to copy edit! That’s super exciting!

Ink and Intrigue is set to be released Oct 17. It doesn’t feel real yet, mostly because I haven’t received the final draft to proof once more before publication. I expect the copy editor will be finished soon and it will be headed my way any day now. Once that’s done, it will feel more real. Complete, even, as much as any story is ever complete.

My only writing goal for the month is one more read through of Ink once the copy editor is finished. Otherwise, I’ve been taking some well needed time off. Lots of cooking and winterizing happening, and plans for crafts of various sorts.

Here’s hoping everyone has a good October! May the words be with you. :revolving_hearts: :herb:

Closing out day 1 of being locked in mortal combat against my alter ego to get written work out there at some point this century: what the fuck is a startup.txt page anyway? Rhetorical question, I know what it is, my brain simply fights me at every turn. A coder I am not. This is baby code allegedly, but it still might as well be Lithuanian with how lost I am absorbing it right now. Non-rhetorical question posed to anyone, what was it like your first day learning CS? How did you know you could do it in the end?

Thank you both for the encouragement and advice. It’s dangerous to go alone, so I will take these! :pray:t4:

Hi everybody!

Chapter 8 of Sancta Sanctorum is up!

Everybody loves pasta! :spaghetti:

2 possible ROs! :love_hotel:

Will you save one of your comrades from certain death? :skull:

Thank you for your enthusiasm, let me know if you like the story so far!

@Vengeance keep it up! We all struggled with coding first, but believe me, it’s easier than it looks  You will get the hang of it and it will become ‘a piece of cake’.

Why is it you always get ideas when you can’t do anything about it apart from a quick note due to being at work :pensive:

On a positive note I now have the opening of Season Three in my head. Spoilers it involves a derailed transport train!. Which brings me to decide whether the MC is on the train when it happens or they arrive after the fact. It’s only a yes or no answer but each has their own pros and cons.

Oh the first time I ever tried to use CS, I felt super overwhelmed and that feeling made me feel dumb. It sucked :joy:

But I’d done way harder stuff in less time. You have too. It might not seem that way now but give it a little while and you’ll see. The thing that worked for me was honestly just making a bunch of stuff. I made a ton of little unfinished projects for every single idea I had not because I wanted to finish a project but because I wanted to get familiar with the language. I have (well, had) a bunch of them, like twenty-thirty, I think? And they weren’t things I was focusing on being a 600K HG, they were just “I want to get comfortable with, idk, string vars or temps or multireplace so I’m gonna focus on that and use this as an opportunity to get the ideas in my head out of my head.” The hardest part was taking time to focus not on the writing but on the coding.

And I still don’t know a bunch of stuff. I’m currently trying to get comfy with arrays, which I only kind of understand even though I… kind of understand them. That makes sense in my head. And there’s a whole other library of functions that I haven’t even explored yet because it’s kind of intimidating lol And I know I’m not the only person here who would describe their CS competency as less than 100% (in my case, way less lol) but as long as you can make your game do what you want, you’re doing great. You don’t have to absorb everything and know it all the time. That nifty wiki is there, might as well use it, and as you do more and more, you’ll remember and get more comfortable with it. You can do it! Summon your inner anime protagonist and fake that confidence!

Happy Halloween month everyone, it’s nice to see so many people so determined.

My only two goals (I’m not a programmer) are get to at least 3000 words and finish sorting out my notes on historical events (and as a bonus improve my handwriting, which is practically a language of its own)

I just sent in two elevator pitches for my next project! Neither of them are in the Creme de la Creme setting :exploding_head: Here are some moodboard images for both.

My thought process upon doing this: Oh, I don’t have any work to do until I hear back about these, what should I do with myself…?

Then: Oh, I need to write a lot of blog posts about Honor Bound in the leadup to release, don’t I… (which is not my favourite thing to do as it’s such a timesink, not to mention that my website is annoying to do anything with…)

Instead of giving Saturnine useful feedback, I created the entire set of art assets for the game with some free resources online. It was quick and easy work, just a matter of cropping a picture and adding text in a sci-fi font.

(Also, if anyone wants to see an example of the full set of art assets for a HG submission, check the link below. It was all cut out from the same picture, so you could could simply create or purchase a single picture, and cut out the parts that you need for each of the required art assets).

You need a better website. :stuck_out_tongue:

What was that font, by the way?
