1542: Rise of the Witchhunter

I came here to offer gum and do the Lord’s work…who wants a piece of gum?! TRICK QUESTION GUM IS THE DEVIL’S WORK!

Thank you for your kind reply!

Regarding the history, it’s going to be one of the key pillars of the game, as the game aims to combine historical accuracy with supernatural fiction. I don’t think the current history is all that long, but I’ll keep in mind that some people will prefer shorter paragraphs.

As I live in The Netherlands myself, you can be assured I will give my country the attention it’s due

Good question.

Many demons I portray will be varying shades of evil. However it could be interesting to include some morally grey demons as well. In the end, it’s up to the player character (PC) to decide if they want to treat demons as evil or as allies.

I really want to keep writing further and get to some new scenes - but I’ve hit a hurdle due to my still limited grasp of ChoiceScript. I’m going to need a day or two to figure out how I can implement languages and stat increases in a working manner before I can finish the exorcism scene.

It’s also kind of annoying and boring to have to keep on changing the startup chapter but it’s necessary for the long term and everyone’s feedback has been very helpful in perfecting this chapter.

I think I’m going to use Ducats as a way for purchasing rewards. Having a mount and having a cool outfit and weapons will all be things that can be purchased, rather than given freely off the bat. I should also include a scene in startup where you see a bad ass Witchhunter with amazing gear, just to make the player jealous and realize what they are working towards.

BTW, I’ve just implemented stats increases.

I’ll be working on languages next. So far, I’ve decided these will be the languages included in the game:

Latin
Italian (i.e. Tuscan + Lombardian + Sicilian)
Dutch
Danish
Magyar (i.e. Hungarian)
Spanish
Polish
English
German (i.e. Austria & Holy Roman Empire states)
Irish
French
Nahuatl (i.e. Aztec)
Slavic (i.e. Russian + Ukrainian + other slavic language groups)
Demonese

I should probably include Turkic, Arabic, Swedish, Greek/Hellenic & Portuguese as well

Demonese? Hehehe, It seems a little silly, but other than that, everything’s nice!

I know it seems silly it’s intentional :stuck_out_tongue:

I wanted to add a little sillyness to allround seriousness of the demons.

I just learned of another language, “Enochian”, which is the purported language of the Angles, which I can add to the game sometime down the road.

sweet so the show Constantine did not put that word out of a hat.
enochian is a real-ish thing, good too know.

just why not talking in the devils language or angels one, both would be intresting. depending how how much power your giving the use of that language over other thing, ppl and / or powers with it. that could become very interesting fast.

Very promising game indeed… I look forward to purchasing the final product.

Modest update:

You can now learn Demonese after the bargain with the demon in Chapter 2.
There are quite a few different role-play ways to deal with it.

Next actions:

I’m going to overhaul the main/side weapon thing and turn it into “Outfit”
I’m going to start adding personality consequences (in stats reflected by “Mercy”, “Fanaticism”, “Orthodoxy”, et cetera…
I’m going to add some text explaining the religious Orders.

After that I’ll be ready to continue writing Chapter 2 <3

I also have a questions for the people who are interested in this game:

  1. I include Latin text in the game, do you guys want me to translate it every time I include it?

If our character knows it than I would like a translation.

seconded that yes. why els would you take latin

Btw, every character you choose will know Latin, it’s the “Lingua Franca”/universal language of those initiated in the Roman Church.

Expanded another 500 words, or 3 pages. Now including some history for the Protestant Reformation.
Once you finish the exorcism of Bruneck, next up is the town of Sterzing. I think this one will be about dealing with a Lutheran heretic: does the player want to be a dogmatic heretic burner, or will the player spare lives focussing more on the supernatural demons rather than temporal politics?

Here’s what I want to do with equipment/weapons/armor:

In the startup chapter you get to choose from a collection of outfits:
Landsknecht, Rodelero, Aventurier, Missionary, Condotierri, Yeoman, Conquistador, Gendarme

These are mainly cosmetic, since most of the action in this game is supernatural, it doesn’t really matter what kind of armor you wear…

The outfits will mostly be a kind of “load out” at the beginning of a mission/chapter, so later on as time commences new outfits will become available and old ones can become obsolete.

So in an order are we going to rise through the ranks to get better equipment or do we buy our own?

The order is mostly a cosmetic choice, giving you a small stats increase at the beginning of the game. That said, you have given me an idea: it might be cool to turns the orders into actual quest-giving organizations, thought on the other hand it might not fit the scope of the game, I’ll keep a mental note on that.

Equipment will be mostly cosmetic: since this game aims for some historic veracity, I can’t create “tiered” armor sets like they’d do in an RPG like World of Warcraft or Skyrim.

The “cool items” in this game, will be religious/supernatural artifacts with special powers, for example a cross shaped pistol firing silver bullets, a sack containing the head of a Gorgon, which can petrify with eye-contact or a splinter from the Spear of Destiny. These kind of items can be either bought or gained through quests, is the idea.

You just made me wonder how would a cross-shaped pistol look like, my mind is officially in an state of confusion.

your confused about a cross shaped gun? thats not that special really.

like the special weapon thing. thing more of a get too end of quest by one or the other way get X reward.
that make the load out reflect of choices in game (even if stat wise they could do mostly the same thing the favor could be writing in too make it interesting.

would make for a lot a writing work thou, so maybe not ?

looking forward too next update. and too see when i can see that what ever i choose makes a change at some point. right not i am not feeling it, but that can change.

Thanks for the feedback.

Would you care to elaborate what makes you feel like your choices have no effects? As you say, you’re not feeling it yet (and admittedly you’re probably right at the moment).
