[WIP] Project Variant – The Price of Survival and the Path of Revenge

Hi everyone! This is my first game, so I’m a bit nervous  but excited to share it.

Title: Project Variant
Genre: Sci-fi / Post-war survival / Mystery
Themes: Trauma, revenge, powers, found family, slow-burn romance, and a body made of living particles.

Summary:
You were blamed for a mission gone wrong. Branded a traitor. Hunted as a criminal.
But you know the truth: you survived something no one else did — and now, the ones who ruined you will answer for it.
In a broken world where Variants walk among us, what are you willing to become to set things right?

Features:

  • Choose your path: Revenge or Redemption
  • Discover hidden powers and secrets. (eventually!).
  • Four slow-burn romance options (eventually!).
  • Make cosmetic choices, including your hat. (Yes, your hat matters emotionally. :billed_cap:)

This is still early and private — but I’d love to hear gentle thoughts, ideas, or just vibes if you check it out. Thank you!

(P.S. This is my very first game, so please be kind! I’m learning as I go )

So far I love this

It’s pretty good. The only thing that needs working on, IMO, is the timeline. Did the UoE rise that fast and the world recover that quickly?

Sounds interesting

Does the story end at when you choose your “resolve” (ex. Expose the truth, get revenge…)?

Thanks so much for checking it out! I really appreciate you taking the time to read it. And yeah, good point — the UoE’s rise was fast. There’s definitely more history and context coming later to explain how things recovered so quickly (and whether they really did…). The timeline’s still a bit in flux right now, so your comment helps a lot!

Thank you so much! I’m really happy to hear that — your comment made my day!

Hi! Thank you for letting me know, I’ll take a look and try to fix it as soon as I can.

Yep, that’s where the demo ends for now! It’s just the beginning though — the next update is on the way. Thank you so much for playing!

I enjoyed it quite a bit so far I just wasn’t sure if that’s were it ended or not so thank you for the clarification!

Had two different errors, one when selecting the ‘short tempered’ option after the thug fight (step closer, voice sharp and full of venom)
The other when choosing ‘something a little more you’ on the hat selection.

Haven’t had enough time to form many strong opinions yet, I got lazy without save states and decided to wait before playing again for now. I do think that there are a lot of fighting styles, and when combined with the fact profiencies (ie: combat/agility) already exist, this could quickly get messy about what choices test what. Even if the styles were simply toggled to be a yes/no to whether you use that style or not, it’s a lot of different scenes you’d end up having to adjust to account for player choice.

Thank you so much for checking it out and for the thoughtful feedback! :folded_hands:

Ah, I really appreciate the heads-up on those two errors — I’ll definitely track them down and patch them in the next update.

Totally hear you on the fighting styles and proficiencies — I’ve been wrestling with how to balance flavor vs. function without it becoming a tangled mess. I might lean toward using the styles more as flavor with occasional stat boosts (or toggles like you mentioned) to simplify future branching. Still exploring what feels fun but manageable!

Thanks again for the time you spent with it — even a short dive means a lot, especially with this being my first project.

A interesting summary defintly a good hook into the story in my opnion and so far i have enjoyed it. One thing i would suggest at this point is activating the cogdemos save feature it has will make play testing easier when we can make saves. looking forward to seeing more and will post my thoughts on it all when i can.

One of the best wips I’ve read even if it’s just the beginning. It has Fallen Hero vibes to it with 2 options to deal the culprits for ruining your life permanently supposedly for peace when in fact it’s everyone’s fault for the war. The scapegoat will get back at them by being the monster they painted us as or the less violent option. I enjoyed that we didn’t just do generic combat and had a lots of options to choose them. I’m gonna eventually try them all out and play my favorites

The amount of choices are really nice, tho i am a little concerned for your fingers with how much more i scrolled down to read every single one compared to other demos. Putting the choose in cyoa lol >_<||| i love it, evem though it might be my love for strong mcs talking

Hiiiii I think I might have found a little bug(Or maybe you put the loop where you still have to write the story so the game doesn’t crash (!?))
When you choose how to dress, if you pick “Time to head out once more…” you actually get redirected to the hat selection.

Also, i think that you shouldn’t convey all those informations in the start, the worldbuilding shouldn’t be conveyed all at once or it gets lost

I love the amount of choices you put, for example in the fighting style or height choice. Keep it up man!!!
