What kind of stories do you want to see for Choice of Games & Hosted Games?

Ever since I read Children of Cain IF, I’ve been wanting more slice of life romance stories in a modern day setting. Maybe something with an ice skater mc, ballet dancer mc, or even a reporter or college student mc…

The first two options are the ones I am most interested in. I would do it myself, but unfortunately I don’t know much about the industry…

I’m pretty sure someone is already working on a ice skater WIP from what I’ve seen on Tumblr. Not sure if it’s gonna be a slice of life thing

Yup, saw it too, though i don’t recall the name right now. I could be wrong, but I think they have no demo, and I don’t put too much stock on games that don’t have them. I’ve been burned too often, waiting years for an update only to get nothing.

I was thinking of this one: offseason-if

I’ll look at that one though. I’m excited there’s a demo!

I concur. If you’ve read Jack Carr’s James Reece books you can understand my direction. High stakes, realistic, military jargon, and a MC up to the task (ex: DEVGRU or CAG as background). None of that fantasy stuff I feel we have up to the eyeballs nowadays. Grounded and dark. Your game Canis Canem is real good by the way.

Oh I really loved Terminal List by Carr both the books and the show! I would definately love more stories like those. Are you writing an IF? I’m more of a reader than a writer, and if I can find more modern military IFs to read. I won’t have to write my own lol. Anyway, Thank you for reading my story!

Something cosy, but with a good/complicated backstory that isn’t a fairy world or fantasy linked. Like small stakes, small town social trouble or some sort of community based story.

More fantasy romance. Seriously, I can’t get enough and it makes me sad when people say they want to see more games without fantasy elements.

any genre with complex characters (having realistic reactions and subtle characterization), reasonable pacing, and well developed plotlines

I’m not into military type games or the college games, but I think what we need now are well written plots with characters that are believable. Basically the game needs to sound authentic, whatever its genre. Its no longer possible to fudge the details and get away with it, one reason why games are longer and more detailed.
I know world building can be complicated, it needs a lot of research, but it can be done and we have had some terrific games recently that prove this. Characters need to be authentic too, not modern personalities in fancy dress. The standard has become higher over the last few years, far more demanding of the author, so players expect lore and a detailed background, even if some of it appears in a codex, something that hasn’t always been available in earlier games.
Its tougher on writers that it was five years ago, an amateur is going to find it harder to break into the genre in the not so distant future, and I know from what I see on other platforms that players are becoming more critical and expect a higher standard with choices that mean something, and characters that are no longer railroaded into the result the writer wants for the ending.
Is it time perhaps for some games-writing online courses or seminars so that those starting out have some idea of what they are getting into?

Hey this is cool I thought usually authors just come up with what they want to write but it’s nice for them to consider what readers/fans want. Anyway I’d love to see more slice of life games. Recently just finished Fleabag series so right now I’m in my heartbreak era or reading so I’d love to see a game where it’s just a nice slice of life with the perfect amount of seriousness, comedy and romance where the protagonist gets cheated on think Love and Leas. If not that I’d love more games focused on Greek and Norse mythology if it’s Norse you play as a god or goddess offspring of Odin and Frigg who the other gods fear for being the God of chaos, Destruction and rage( For inspiration I’d take Twilight of the gods series and Goddess of War 4 and Ragnarok). For Greek mythology it could be set during the Trojan war where you play as a demigod either for the Trojan army, The Greek or as an Amazonian and you can choose who you want to be your god or goddess father or mother. I’d also love a western game where you play as an outlaw who owns a ranch during the civil war ( inspired by the Good The Bad and The downright Ugly, Django, Yellowstone and Billy The Kid ( show). I don’t know why maybe because I just love the story of the game but I’d love for the author who made SLAMMED if he/ she/ they could make a sequel. SLAMMED established our MC as a rising star so the Sequel would probably go from future rising star to now the guy but not for the company they are in now but for another( I was kinda inspired by the Montreal Screwjob). I’d love a basketball too kinda like a ( All American series, HBO SHOWTIME, coach Carter and inspired by College Tennis by the way is such a great game really hoping for it to be successful in the choice of games community.) but lastly I’d love love love to see a sports story on racing preferably Formula 1 or NASCAR for formula 1 I was inspired by the movie Rush and for NASCAR it would be funny if it was inspired by Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006). Yeah
P.S : I know this is a lot but I saw this thread and I just needed to let it all out also a quick question how does it work like do Authors sent the game to COG guys then they give a thumbs up for the game to be released or Authors just release whenever they want. I’m still new.

Basically, Choice of Games has two subsidiaries, Heart’s Choice and Hosted Games. All three companies/imprints have different requirements and processes.

Choice of Games and Heart’s Choice have the most similar publishing process; the main difference between the two is that HC publishes romance games and has slightly different content requirements accordingly. For both CoG and HC, writers have to apply by submitting a CV and a writing sample. If the CoG team are impressed with the initial application, the potential writer will be invited to submit some game pitches. If all goes well, they’ll be offered a contract to write one of the games they pitched, with the guidance of one of CoG’s editors.

Authors for Hosted Games submit their work when it’s finished, but publication is still very much a process. HG decides if the game meets its requirements for publication (it’s a very low standard - passably readable English, minimum word count, no IP violations, no game-breaking bugs, no grossly offensive content), suggests any changes that may be necessary, makes all the arrangements with app markets, and designates a release date.

Authors who aren’t under contract to CoG/HC and aren’t trying to be published via HG (either because they don’t meet the requirements for publication, they aren’t interested in publication for whatever reason, or the game isn’t finished yet) can basically do what they want, as long as they aren’t making any money from it.

By the way, fair warning: authors usually do just come up with what they want to write. If they take threads like this into consideration at all, it’s usually because they have a couple of ideas and they’re trying to decide which one has better sales potential. Most authors do solicit feedback from readers during the writing process, but at that point they’ve already decided on the genre and the basics of the plot.

If you had one author from either the CoG or HC. Who would you choose and what type of genre and story would it be?

Well, my real top choice would involve a game that’s already in progress getting finished faster, but seeing as how that’s kind of a boring answer …

I’d love Leia Talon’s writing, and I would love to see her tackle either the “magical boarding school” trope or a slice-of-life contemporary romance.

Superpowers are interesting, and if someone is interested in creating another superhero story, a unique approach would be to feature a superhero protagonist in a world under alien invasion, forcing heroes, villains, and vigilantes to unite. The main character could be a retired pro hero or a newbie.

we’ve all seen that in movies before, but the invasions were often resolved too quickly, with overpowered heroes ending them in a few days—or even just one.

Maybe a samurai game in which you can pick a clan you serve.

I have a lot I’ll be honest.

  1. A Shogun based story that takes place during the Shogun era of Japan where you coil either play as a hidden Empress of a hidden destroyed clan(fictional or real clan your option) and try to rise from the shadows to take over or as a young but legendary samurai ( Achilles level legendary) who is urgently called upon to help out.
  2. A Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid/ Tombstone/ The Assassination of Jesse James inspired outlaw game that takes place around either the beginning of the prime years of outlaw
  3. A slice of life game that is basically a HBO “Euphoria”/ “ Anora” spin-off. ( Takes place in Modern day Florida where we can live anywhere there example Jacksonville or Miami or Orlando or Tampa. MC is basically a mashup of Rue Bennett, Anora and Maddie Perez)
  4. A slice of life game that is basically a HBO “The Idol” spin-off. ( Modern day where MC is basically if female the next Madonna Taylor Swift mashup if make the next Michael Jackson/ Elvis in terms of popularity but can choose any genre to work on.
  5. A non fantasy Medieval age game that lets us see two POVs from a Viking and a prince or princess of England.
  6. A gangster game that takes place during the prohibition era of America/Canada where we play as gangsters who rob banks
  7. Another gangster game during 1980s Sicily
  8. Another gangster game that basically focuses on the narcotics game in the Scarface universe
  9. A boxing game that is basically Creed inspired
  10. A historical fantasy game that takes place during the Trojan War ancient Greece
  11. A sequel to game “SLAMMED” where our MC is screwed over again even after proving they were main event level so they head to a new promotion that is hotter than ever ( this promotion is basically WWE inspired) in Texas.
  12. A sports game that focuses on Gridiron Football in the NFL, a real story Inspired by “ Any Given Sunday” during either the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s or even the 2000s.
  13. A slice of life game where we are in a emotional and physical abusive relationship with a cheating scum and try to find happiness and get out the relationship or be consumed by it.

Yeah… so that’s all my ideas :confounded_face::confounded_face:

I know their a lot but they were just in my mind for a long long time and I needed to air them out.
