Thieves' Gambit: The Curse of the Black Cat

Could the chrome store at least be used in the drop down menu? It’s not there either. Or is there a preference that people who’re purchasing the game just use steam instead? Or the CoG store?

And now I’ll have to play it again…

Really like this one. Terrific addition to the other CoG genres.

I saw it missing there too and was disappointed – because I want it offline and I have no other device. But I went to the Chrome store and found it, at least. Just odd to not have it in the drop down. An omission, I assume (and hope)?

I actually kind of liked that Bouchard turned out to be Nick, but I wish that there had been some sort of scene where he tells your character that what he felt for you in Venice was real if you chose to romance him. Otherwise I felt like he was just faking the whole thing, and it felt weird for me to run off with a guy who obviously was just using my character. Or if he had tried to change your mind when you refuse to come with him. Something to show that it was difficult thing for him to do. Nick’s romance seemed anticlimactic.

@Yermog I thought there was. Hmm I checked the code (I went and bought the game on the chrome store so that I could read the code) and there definitely is. Not sure how easy or difficult it is to reach though.

There’s a splattering of suggestions throughout that he does actually care. I think most of those come if you discover who he is just before that scene when you have the choice to sleep with him or not, and then confront him. Of course he could just be playing you, but I don’t think so.

He steps closer to you, voice pleading. “But I need to tell you something. I was going to reveal myself to you. I’m not just pretending to care about you. I may be a liar but my feelings for you are real. Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t feel it, too.” - Romance text.

"I’ll be honest. I was going to reveal myself to you soon anyway. I’m not faking my interest in you. It’s become obvious to me that we make a much better team than we do enemies. Look me in the eye and tell me you don’t agree. - However, This is the text if you’re not in a romance, and we know in both cases that the precise point he intends to tell us who he is, isn’t some nice romantic confession, it’s when he’s got the gem in hand and is about to run off with it and figures he’ll ask us to betray all of our friends.

He stares at you for a moment. “I’m sorry,” he says. His accent is Parisian French now. “I’m so sorry. I was running the con, it was a fantastic con but I didn’t count on falling for you. I was going to tell you, I promise. But we were having so much fun.” - This here’s the text you get if you discover who he is, sleep with him first, and then confront him that morning.

All this said I don’t think it was difficult for him at all. I don’t think he found any of the betrayals difficult, he’s a conman after all, a confidence trickster who gets people to trust him and uses that trust against them. However his plan always was to steal the diamond, get the upper hand of you, then reveal who he was, and invite you to join him.

That said I’ve not actually done a play-through of the new version. Last time I played was during the beta test when a lot of this wasn’t there. I’m not sure how the ending plays out now.

I really liked it. It didn’t seem short to me, the writing was great and often hilarious, and the characters were well done. The only thing I didn’t like all that much was that the ending seemed rushed.

See, I never got ANY of that when I played.

Maybe it’s because I never discovered that Nick was Bouchard, but I didn’t even see that as an option in the game. No matter what I picked, Nick didn’t show up until the evening ball, and even when I romanced him, at the end he didn’t act like he cared about the PC at all. And I KNOW I romanced him- I got the achievement for it. Is it maybe a bug, or did the author take it out? I would have loved to see that content in there if it was removed for some reason.

It’s a bit disappointing now that I know that stuff is actually there. I wonder if I missed something… Can you tell me what you did?

@Yermog I read the code. It wasn’t there during the beta-test. It is there during the full game though.

The main scene is when you’re in your room after the ball. It looks like you need to be suspicious of Nick and have an intelligence above 50, and then read the article about Bouchard’s Venice heist. If you’re super suspicious of him then you can read another article and that’ll twig you on to his identity too.

Looking back through the code, to set yourself as being suspicious of Nick, your main choice is when Nick shows up offering an introduction to the Duke, then Rania complains , you need to respond saying you’ll keep an eye on him, or say you’ll take advantage of his skills. Or in the scene where he’s dancing with you and he mentions just having been in Venice, choose “Didn’t you say you were just in Buenos Aires?”

I tried it and it worked! Thanks so much! It’s a lot more satisfying when he admits that he really cares for you.

  1. Just checked and the answer is no. There’s a reason you assembled the team you did. You need all of them.

  2. Presumably you don’t have the stats to inform her using the phone. Try a different option.

  3. As far as I’m aware the only two platforms you can read the code on are Chrome and the Choice of Games webstore. So you need to have purchased the game on either of those.

I have windows 8. It took me forever to track down the correct folder if you’ve purchased it on the Chrome Store. For me the the code resides at file:///C:/Users/((USERNAME))/AppData/Local/Google/Chrome/User%20Data/Default/Extensions/jickpmgeolbdpldfpefcadbjoninpelg/1.0.5_0/scenes/ replace ((USERNAME)) with the user name you saved your stuff onto.

Also…was I the only one that got a little bit annoyed at all the characters alluding to events and heists that we never got a glimpse of, and likely never will? Like when they say, “Remember Abu-Dhabi?”

Nope…I get that the author was trying to add some extra history to the characters, but it just kind of grated at my nerves after the fifteenth time.

It’s kind of a genre cliche that’s being intentionally referenced here. The idea is that international jewel thieves (along with secret agents and the like) are always having these passionate, short-lived affairs with other members of their profession that end when one party or the other inevitably skips town in pursuit of the next job. They then spend the rest of their lives referencing the event by the city where it happened.

Because the game has to allow for multiple sexual orientations, the MC has two of these, whereas in static fiction it would probably only come up once.

I thought that that was very much a part of the genre. Events of the past that are just hinted at and referenced a lot.

Both the heist tv shows I’ve watched seem to do it. All of the characters have pasts, and while some of it’s revealed, other aspects, including past interactions between the team members, are just hinted at.

With Nick I assumed it was something of a running joke, especially when you can take the “nope, I don’t remember Venice” option.

I’d also reference Casablanca here but I’ve not seen it. I have played Discworld Noir, which is partially based on Casablana (I know, I know) and there was a lot of remember Paris, we’ll always have Paris (well not Paris, but it was somewhere similar I’m sure) between the main character and his ex, Ilsa.

I just took it as an aspect of the genre, and I didn’t need details.

You phrase it so much better. Precisely.

Oh, okay. I guess, not being familiar with this genre was part of the reason why it annoyed me.

I haven’t read the whole thing yet, but I was just wondering if there are any romance options other than Nick?

@jeexx95 If you like men there’s Nick. If you like women there’s Rania.

are those the only two?

Yes. There’s another flirtation you can engage in but it doesn’t lead anywhere.

Little problem here.

I tried to score Bouchard romance ending many time but it always end up with him disappearing. And clearly when Bouchard shoots Reg, it said I have made an enemy but Reg still appeared in the end as a friend, is this a bug?
