True they’re popular in Missouri as well. The first three breeds are a definite for options it’s 4 and 5 I’m on the fence about lol

Mutt can be pretty flexible. I can’t think of any literary works with a german shepherd. You could take a different angle and have a trained wolf that was raised from a pup.

Sorry guys I just got done working (milking cows) @IronRaptor I haven’t seen German Shepherds in literature either only in the show Rinn Tin Tin I was debating that or blue heeler but your wolf pup idea works nicely. I m planning on giving each breed a different personality and I needed an aggressive overhyper and protective breed and this is perfect

They totally are but the only dog I see being true to the story is the terrier, since the Bull Mastiff and the Rottweiler were dogs of status at the time, Akitas are completely out of their environment in the South West, and while I like the Ridgeback they weren’t in the US yet and wasn’t quite in widespread us in 1869

Might add a Coyote as well, if found as a pup, they can be domesticated.
And you should look at dogs that would have been used to herd cattle at the time. They would be common in Texas at the time of the Civil War.

I thought of using coyotes but they’re essientially an inferior wolf
And as of research goes I think I did pretty good because Yellow Labs (Old Yellar) and border Collies have both been mentioned in sources I’ve researched and the Blue Tick was a common dog through the South and there are accounts of them on cattle drives and the wolf just adds flavor to the story. Don’t get me wrong there are other breeds I wanted to use but coding man for example the Blue Heeler was also used on drives but I put them low on my list of dogs bc I personally think they’re to agressive I mean they even out rank German Shepherds in the numbers of domestic livestock killed by dogs I mean the military doesn’t even use them bc they’re to difficult to train

Probably a bit late and perhaps not fitting your story at all, but could possibly be neat to see some native represented too. Perhaps some ‘old enemy’ of the Apache, since you did mention them featuring, to tie it in a bit. Merely tossing ideas about, feel free to put them all on the ignore list. 
So nice to see a western being considered, surprisingly uncommon theme.

I thought about that being an option but decided against though u can choose ur race in all options besides FFL or Mexican, So u can be a Cherokee(CSA) or Pawnee(US)

Might I suggest doing a bit of reading up on Mangus Colorado. My best friend is a direct descendant. Mangus is not widely known, but was one of the most important Apache chiefs of the time period you are looking at and has quite an interesting tale that could make for interesting nemesis or potential ally depending on how he was used.
Again really looking forward to this, as aside from Tin Star, which is amazing, there really aren’t any other good western CYOA out there.
