Ten years of Choice of Games: What are your favorites?

Hey, hey first time posting after lurking for years! I figure this is the best thread to get started since it gives off my feelings on things!

I’ve grown to become really fond of Hosted Games and I’m pretty sure most of my faves are either WiPs or on that particular tab. A lot of my preferences come from either re-readability or just having a banger love interest that usurps the others, but there’s also other valid things out there. So my top 10 overall are:

  1. Samurai of Hyuga
Probably the series I like the most. A lot of it is a mild bias for Jun/ko supremacy since I adore the yandere archetype and its rarity in games (and in media that actually does it well) makes it all the more appealing. I also love the classical ronin archetype given I grew up on old samurai movies and traditional fiction like that. Every once in a while I replay the series just for fun, though I’m so solidly in the Jun/ko boat after Book 4 I think it’s quite literally re-reading a book series at this point rather than a choice of games, haha.

  2. Wayhaven Chronicles
One of the few romance things I enjoy reading, plus the combination of Tsundere Detective/A is again, a rarer thing done well in fiction but Wayhaven manages to nail it. All the LI are super cute though and I actually replay through every route once in a while.

  3. Demon: Recollect
As weird as it sounds, this game is pretty iconic for me. There are scenes and concepts that I do think about on the side and something about it just kinda keeps me coming back. Kinda hard to explain my attachment, but I was following this as a lurker from the day it came out as a WiP for a reason aha. I still remember the original choice from the first demo!

  4. Soul Stone War
Very fun and solid, a sort of combination of Wayhaven and Hyuga in regards to how I feel about it. Romances are cute and I’m here for a certain someone’s fun tragic route. To put it in joke terms, I was looking for spice and I got the whole bottle of Sriracha with 'em.

  5. Fallen Hero
Another one that is simply solid, and hard to explain. Something about the protagonist and their tragedy is simply engaging. They’re both customizable but their own person, which is difficult balance to strike in games, but it was done darn well.

  6. Tally Ho
I actually laughed a lot while reading it and I find the trope of “hapless master/hypercompetent servant” ripe for amusement. A great recommendation for people looking for a charming little romp.

  7. The Shadow Society
It was cute to read, reminded me a lot of a more…whimsy version of Wayhaven? I’d have to see how the plot progresses more but I do enjoy it quite a bit, ran through every route just because I was curious how things changed.

  8. Dragon Racer
Another case of I’m not sure how to explain it, but I liked the concept and how the plot was played out. I’m not sure if the sequel is ever coming out or if it’s even in WiP but I’d look forward to seeing how it ends up.

  9. Fatehaven
A bit of nostalgia factor since this was the first game I ever played on repeat and did every route on back in the day. It only somewhat holds up still to this day and it took me actual years to figure out what the twist at the end was. Still a fun read to go back to here and there. The opening scene’s climax is still iconic tbh.

  10. Mecha Ace
    Haha mecha go brr

The great tournament was by far the most satisfying story for me. Creatures such as we was so good it, made me cry. The final one I want to list is Vampire house because it kept the perfect amount of suspense through its hole story

Me too, I just wish choice of vampire had an actual endgoal, like if it would allow you to be quaestor at the end of the game. It deliberately messes with you.

Fallen hero
Heroes of myth
The sea eternal
Vtm: night road ( I think this is what got me into these types of games in the first place, licensing pays off I guess)
The eagles heir
Love at elevation (despite some continuity errors and not really being made for more than a few replays)
Sixth grade detective

Honestly there are a bunch more I’d like to recognize, in particular the ones I don’t see people talking about often, but I’m going to try and limit myself.

In general though, I have a lot of respect for authors who can write a short story and not have it feel rushed, especially those with romance.

My favorite CoGs are approximately all of them. :joy:  Whenever I play a new game, I’m like no, this is my favorite, [plays a new game] no, this one is my favorite, [plays a new game] no! this one etc etc etc. They’re all my favorite.

I’m a fan of CoG for a long time. Here’s my list:

1.Hero Rise trilogy (follows same character) and it’s The Hero Project 2 book sequels
2.Sabres of Infinity and Guns of Infinity (Third book Lords of Infinity is in making) 1 character story. Male-only. Game for history lovers, especially those who love Napoleonic wars times (set in fictional world though).
3.Fallen Hero. Rebirth
4.Silverworld

The rest of below I love equally as in terms of being in my favorites list, however the four above are unmatched for me. So those who are below… I picked them out in random order, not knowing which one I prefer over which if you get what I mean.

5.It’s Killing Time
6.Stronghold, A Hero’s Fate
7.A Squire’s Tale

If I kept hosted games in my list, the list of my favorites would be different.

While I don’t often “play” CoG games (the act of choosing is so oddly stressful for me, no matter how well-written the game is), I’ve copy edited a fair number of them over the years and have a short list of my favorite reads. I don’t know how any of these play, as such, but the I think the writing is truly remarkable in:

  1. Jolly Good: Cakes and Ale
  2. Fool!
  3. Heart’s Choice: A Pirate’s Pleasure
  4. Chronicon Apocalyptica
  5. I, Cyborg

And, since he’s my partner, I’ve read a lot of @Moochava’s prose and he’s naturally my favorite writer of all time, though I haven’t had the pleasure of officially editing his games yet.

Last july, I commented on this thread with a top5, from 5 to 1, which was like that:
5 - Crème de la Crème
4 - Community College Hero (all released content)
3 - The Heroes Rise trilogy and Fallen Hero (ex aequo, but Fallen Hero may be ranked higher once finished)
2 - Wayhaven Chronicles (all released content)
1 - Samurai of Hyuga (all released content, with a preference for the first half of book 3)

Months after that, I have new contestants that placed… EXTREMELY high!
So I feel like I should revise my ranking.

New top 5 is:
5 - Heroes Rise / Fallen Hero
4 - The Shadow Society (book 1 released so far)
3 - Wayhaven Chronicles
2 - Samurai of Hyuga
1 - Relics of the Lost Age (book 1 released so far)

I won’t be describing again the ones that were in my previous top 5, but for the new ones. Well, I had a blast with these.

The Shadow Society attracted me because that’s my type of stories. I was a bit wary because it had mixed reviews on Steam, but I kept going back to it again and again, and realizing every single time I had already checked it out and left it for later because of the reviews. After 5 or 6 times doing so, I thought it was stupid and bought it. And I don’t regret it at all.
The reviews are to an extent unfair in comparing the game to Wayhaven Chronicles, considering both games simply follow a visual novel formula and have a supernatural theme. Not a lot more in common in my opinion. And some reviews criticize the pacing and other stuff, but that has been adressed in a huge update at some point. I highly recommend that game!
It may go up in the ranking when the next book is released - right now, it’s number 4 because it’s an introduction to the story - a great introduction with lots of things happening, but still an introduction.

And the other one is Relics of the Lost Age that… was literally a life changer for me, to be honest. This is a type of stories I don’t usually enjoy (Indiana Jones / Tomb Raider like), and I didn’t even want to play it, but then I saw two very specific negative reviews (thank god now good reviews did even things up), and… one of these… well, the person was so weirdly angry and expressed their anger in such a childish way, I thought, “man, that one probably didn’t even understand the story”… and that actually made me want to play. I may or may not have been a troll and commented on that review after playing to thank them for making me discover one of my favorite games of all times because of their outburst
Anyway, I have already written a very extensive review of that on Steam, and I won’t be gushing again, but let’s just say it’s a ridiculously long game (which is always approved as far as I’m concerned), and it’s just SO SOOO good.
