I’m kind of curious as to what everybody’s first CS game was. I discovered COG when I was thirteen trying to google where I could find those pick-a-path stories after my best friend brought one on the bus that his mom gave him. Since I had no money, I could only play the free ones, and my very first was “Choice of the Dragon,” which was low-key my gateway drug into interactive fiction. What was everyone else’s first? How did you end up getting interested in IF?
My first was Tin Star. Then Affairs of the Court. Which was lucky, really, because if the first had been AotC I would not have stayed.
Went back and looked, because something didn’t feel right. Tin Star is actually on Hosted Games, so I guess AotC was my first CoG, technically.
It was such a long time ago that I honestly don’t remember what the very first one I played was. I came over from my love of visual novels when I was 10 or 11, so CoG had started as a company not that many months prior. My first was either Choice of Broadsides, Choice of the Dragon or Wizard’s Choice. However, the first couple series that truly made me fall in love with these games were easily Affairs of the Court which at the time it released was called Choice of Romance and Lost Heir. Never looked back. Now flash forward to today, and I almost own every CoG & HG game and do own every Heart’s Choice. You could quite appropriately call me a superfan.
I discovered CoG back when they’d published only four games, and Hosted Games had published about a dozen, all completely free unless you wanted to remove ads. I downloaded them all. I’m pretty sure the first one I played was Choice of Broadsides.
The Lost Heir. I went on a buying frenzy after I decided to enter the contest in 2017 and this was my first acquisition. I really sucked at it. Never made it through without losing a party member.
Either Choice of the Vampire or Choice of Romance. I was like, what, 12 or 13? My family just bought our first Android tablet, and my portion of the tab was just literally romance games, which included those two lol.
For HG, I guess it was Zombie Exodus?
Those were the days when their libraries were TINY. Like, CoG only had like Dragon, Vampire, Romance, and Broadsides. And HG had slightly more.
Mine was Choice of the Dragon. I read it when it came out on my friend’s phone when I was 15. (I didn’t have a smart phone then.) I played almost all of the choices and was hooked on CS games after that, especially Zombie Exodus
Fallen Hero. I stumbled upon it by chance during a commute, tried the demo, and was instantly hooked. I had played some of the Lone Wolf books when I was in school, and I couldn’t believe how many great stories were out there!
My first COG was Heroes Rise in 2018. I’ve always liked RPGs, so the customization of characters and the ability to decide which direction the story would take made me fall in love instantly.
In the case of HGs, my first was Zombie Exodus, not long after HR. If Heroes Rise made me fall in love with IFs, ZE hooked me in such a way that to this day I re-read the original twice a year. Atmosphere, characters, story, simply a masterpiece.
First CoG/HG game was Marine Raider
The Swamp Castle was the first ChoiceScript game I found
I was really bored with typical mobile games and decided to find something new on the playstore
I’d say it was a life-changing moment, now I’m stuck here with y’all
The Wayhaven Chronicles for me. It was almost three years ago. I’ve always enjoyed games that allow you to role-play a customisable character and that have romances. At one point I reached a stage where I had played everything I could find that met my criteria, and I needed a new fix. Then I remembered that someone on Choices: Stories You Play subreddit once recommended people to play The Wayhaven Chronicles, though I wasn’t interested in playing it at the time because I prefer games with visuals. But since I didn’t have anything else new to play, I decided to give it a try anyway. And since then, I’ve been hooked - best decision ever.
First one I ever played was choice of vampire. I was looking for choose your own adventure games and CoG was the only one that felt right. But the first game I bought was Way Walkers still love it. Dang It was awhile back I wanna say 2012?
choice of robot
I was just looking for different games similar to A Legionary’s Life and came across a recommendation on reddit, I don’t remember the person’s nickname (although I’ve been trying to find), but they recommended “Sabres of Infinity” and thus opened up a whole world hitherto unknown to me. This Person and Paul Wang are legends, my immense gratitude to them.
P.S. Paul Wang’s works still are my favorites.
Zombie Exodus. I was searching the app store for zombie games years ago and stumbled across it.
My first game was the great tournament followed by swamp castle. I think this was 4 or 5 years ago. I went on a reading frenzy after those two that admittedly hasn’t stopped. So I’m not sure which games followed, only that there are many.
My first game was the Eagle’s Heir. This game was literally what hooked me on interactive fiction as a whole.
I hate to admit it, it was Wayhaven, found on Steam. My excuse? I had been going blind for several years and regular games were beyond me, it had to be something I could read, and I didn’t even know that IF was a thing. After 3 ops I can see, but IFs are still my guilty secret, as unlike a book, I can replay them again.
Choice of the Dragon - after which I immediately started planning to write my own game(s). This was what I’d been wanting to do ever since I improvised CYOA stories to my friends as a kid.
