SoS: The Mortal Coil (WIP)

After a play through picking the gauntlets as a weapon I just noticed the Mr T reference :joy:

I just really want this moment to happen:

That was a lot of fun~ To think this is just a demo haha~ Personally, I thought the pacing was consistent enough for me to follow through. Despite this game being about something I was absolutely clueless about :sweat_smile:. A unique setting paired with a unique character role, I love it.

I appreciate you allowing us to shrug off Daniel though, I have a slight bias against child characters but I cant wait until my Gabriel finally learns to care for him in some way. :blush:

Is it bad that I was hoping to be able to punch Michael in the face? I had the gauntlets drawn and everything. Dang it, Israfel. I just wanted to get one hit in. Just the one. :joy:

Exactly what I did. (+20).

Wonderful update, love teasing Michael. :smile:

I started by asking ā€œAre you okay?ā€, then questioned the child a bit and examined the body. After examining it, the game referred to the child as Daniel a few times, even though I hadn’t learned his name yet.

I found it a bit odd that during that exchange, I had to walk away from Daniel to examine the body with my grace. And after doing that, I was forced to select the option to examine it physically as well, even though it didn’t give me any additional information.

I also tried opening by examining the child with grace, then try to execute it, and not ask any further questions. The game told me Daniel was now my responsibility, even though I’d never asked his name.

Lastly I found a typo:
"As much as I would love to stand around and here you try to justify your execution of the boy,

(Btw, unless Gabriel is purposely teasing, that line seems a bit odd if I’ve myself tried to execute him just moments earlier.)

I love that our choices appear everywhere. In one playthrough I had Israfel chastising me for being too distracting when I ā€œthrow a net of Holy Fire with the tip of my rapierā€ , and btw, also loved the dramatic answer to that.
Thank you for putting the panic option when Daniel starts to cry, that’s what I would likely do in real life (I really don’t know how to deal with kids :sweat_smile:). It would be really nice to see more awkwad scenes like this in the future.

Israfel: Israfel would follow you into Hell if you asked, and even if you didn’t. You are his closest sibling and he will always be by your side.
Daniel: Daniel trusts you and follows you out of affection. He tries to please you with his actions.

Can I wrap them around a blanket and protect them from the evils of the world? :blush:

Man… i finally able to met Daniel :grin: Just like my nephew in ZE: SF. I would be an overprotective angel. lol.

and Michael… i really wanna punch him in the face hard. and hell, considering how uptight michael is i wouldn’t even suprised when he say something like this to your Human form later…

For sure, the second half of the story will involve more combat. Flashbacks will also provide an opportunity for more combat during the first half of the story.

@avidreader
That reference was purely coincidental… but now that you’ve pointed it out, that’s probably part of what was rolling around in my subconscious at the time.

@BoisterousBumblebee
I’m glad you went that route. That’s not a style I personally play well but I do want to make that available for people. If there’s areas in the future where you’re like ā€˜I feel that I should be able to do _____’ please drop a note.

@KuraiHeka
Fixed the typo. Thank you for catching that! I also went back and revised the examination portion so 1. You can leave after doing one type. 2. There’s a little more difference between them. 3. Hopefully I caught all the ā€˜Daniels’ references that shouldn’t have been there. I’m not 100% sure on this, but I did fix a few.

As for the last bit, I added a line or two for clarification if you tried to kill Daniel. My intent was that since Gabriel now has specific orders, they were going to deliberately ignore the fact that they had just done the same thing. If you play through again, I would appreciate your thoughts on the bit I added (does that make it feel smoother? do you feel like there should still be more said there?)

@Lyanna
Daniel you can! Israfel not so much. He likes to be able to take care of himself.

@Lithophene @Alder
Nice to know that Michael’s eliciting such strong reactions! You will have the option to punch him at some point in the future, you’ll just have to bide your time

On a completely separate note, I’m redoing the next scene after a few of the Tumblr questions. Originally the scene was going to be mostly interacting with Sabriel and then choosing your mortal shell, with minimal other interactions. The current redesign gives you more options to interact with different characters. So I have a few questions for you people:

  1. Would you like to meet more of the archangels and interact with them/other angels?

  2. Do you prefer a faster scene that moves the action along, or do you like opportunities to speak with people and build relationships? (Or do you prefer the option to skip and interact?)

  3. What’s your opinion on options like:
    I’m going to go search for X
    *#*Go left (this leads to X, but you don’t know that).
    *#*Go right (this leads to Y, which is completely different, but again, you have no idea)

Thanks for your feedback!

Yes; absolutely yes. They’ll all have known Gabriel for millennia and will know how they operate, and most of them may respond differently, so I’m looking forward to !Abrasive Gabriel interacting with her peers.

Usually the latter; more detail is always appreciated, but if we’ve already been through something similar earlier in the game, it just feels like rehashing in a sense.

I’ll be honest; I really don’t like these options. I like to immerse myself in the game as much as the next gal, but I don’t like it when the character is left in the dark except for a plot point, so to speak. And also because I’m far too neurotic to let choosing the wrong option slide; pretty much 100% of the time, I’ll replay the entire game again just to choose the right option. You have no idea how much I replayed Samurai of Hyuga just to get 100% Attunement. It sucked, but that’s what I’m like.

Anyway, there you go.

Hi! So… anyone interested in Michael…? Anyone?..

I’m interested… particularly in beating him with a stick for being such a d*. Oh wait… I thought I was supposed to roleplay my character but it seems both me and my Gab agree that Michael needs to be taught a lesson… now where did I put my latex boots and rope bindings? Bad angel! :wink:

Seriously though, I prefer the kind and caring Israfel. At least he doesn’t act like he has a superiority complex and the need to show off his authority.

Oh, absolutely.
It would be really awesome to see how the other angels interact with Gabriel since they’ve known them for ages!
Especially for a non-golden winged Gabriel.

Is something in-between those two possible?
I don’t mind it when a scene drag out (especially if the story is as good as this.) But I can feel lost in a combat scene that’s longer than it should with alot of enemies.
Interaction with other character is what I’d focus on alot more in games like this[quote=ā€œDae-kalina, post:274, topic:15298ā€]

None of that seems … Good.
@Alexodia explained why in the best way.

If this is regarding rewards:

As long as X will eventually cross to Y and visa-versa I am ok with this type of decision - or equivalents. If path X leads to a Gatling gun, and path Y does not ever do so, as long as path Y leads to an equivalent I am happy.

If path X leads to a Gatling gun and path y leads to nothing - that is when I start feeling resentment of these types of decisions.

If this is regarding story arcs:

As long as replayability is there I do not mind these types of decisions. If it is a one and done story then I get resentful of these types of decisions involving story arcs.

Of course!. I want to know what impression does my gabriel gave to others Archangel or angels and what they thought of him. since they would be different combination of him Gabriel.

It depends though, if the game focused on replayability i usually skipped combat entirely, since i memorized them well in one single playtrough.

So i usually focused on character interactions and relationship buildings instead.

Ugh… i don’t like it when the author left you in the dark to which option you should choose… since that kinda option usually leads to instant game over, ( which you will always found in other CYOA game ) I hated it when i need to start from the begining again because of it. I lost my interest quickly that way and need countless of hours for my mood to go back.

Unless… the two options will lead you to meet characters, weapons or equipment that exclusive to that option only, then i’m fine with it

Thanks for the feedback everyone! (@WhiteLynx @Alexodia @Eiwynn @Alder)

A quick clarification point on the last question/the specific scenario I was planning on using it in:
(Selected)#You leave the room to go find Daniel.
A. You go left. (This leads you to Daniel and Israfel, where you can then choose to interact with Israfel or Daniel)
B. You go right. (This leads you to Sabriel and Auriel, where you can eavesdrop or join them).

After some of the feedback, I’m planning on changing it to this:

(Selected)#You leave the room to explore the compound.
A. You go left, where a sign says waiting rooms. This is likely where you’ll find Daniel. (This leads you to Daniel and Israfel, where you can then choose to interact with Israfel or Daniel)
B. You go right, towards a sign that says break room. This is probably where Sabriel went to get her ā€˜cuppa’. (This leads you to Sabriel and Auriel, where you can eavesdrop or join them).

I was considering the first option because I liked the idea of a kind of ā€˜surprise encounter’ but I can see the potential for annoyance. In regards to combat/end game scenarios, I plan on having a fairly forgiving system (plus, you know, saves because I hate replaying a game from the start when I make one bad decision that I regret… @Alexodia I sympathize with that need for 100% attunement :sweat_smile:) that helps take into account the strengths of your character even when taking an approach that your character is not well suited for (like a stoic character making a rousing public speech).

Rewards should be clearly explained (these are primarily skill increases, so it would be like

  • A. Have Alice show you how to cook. (Spend time with Alice and increase cooking)
  • B. Go to the firing range with Iain (Raise firearms skill, spend time with Iain).

The combination of rewards will change (so in the above example, going to the firing range wouldn’t always be with the same person…)

@Ailef
You may be part of a minority at the moment. Maybe more people will come around after some flashbacks/other interactions where he’s being less… himself. Michael is a very complex character with a lot of issues, but I still adore him. Even if he is a right prick most of the time. He truly does care for Gabriel though.

@IvoryOwl
Oh my. I think your Gabriel might be taking pointers from Iro. On the other hand, just mention latex boots and rope bindings to Michael would probably result in an instant KO…

Would that be Michael being knocked out from the shock, or him knocking you out in indignation?

You aren’t alone, I’m definitely interested in him. He is the kind of person I enjoy arguing with ('cause we are polar opposites), it sounds fun or maybe I’m just crazy.

@silent15
From shock. Much as he may not approve of that kind of behavior, he tries to avoid resorting to physical violence.

@May_Rinn
I hope at the very least that it proves to be interesting.

@SuperNova
…now you see it… hopefully now you don’t :disappointed_relieved: Thanks for the catch!
