SoS: The Mortal Coil (WIP)

Am I missing something? Because I needs to play this again but there’s no working link. Pls halp por favor. Gracias.

Because of new idiotic dropbox policies, you now have to download it and launch it in your navigator.

We should probably put an link for dashingden (or however that website is spelled that a lot of people are switching over to to hot the games/wips) here for them when they do pop back in so that way they they have an easy ref for what they need to cross over to if they don’t want to use this way.

@AngelOfTheBroken

@Dae-kalina has a Tumblr which has a working link to the game without downloading. Can always check there if the link wasn’t updated. Would still recommend editing the first post’s link though.

Ooh didn’t notice! Thanks for telling me. :slight_smile:

So I never got around to the update last weekend after grad school gave me a lovely wakeup call and then a hurricane, and then I came to post the updated version and lo and behold Dropbox links are now an issue -_-

So… I think I’ve fixed it??? And both here and the link on tumblr have been updated (the tumblr post was supposed to go out tomorrow… so if you thought it was actually updated, I’m afraid that was not the case >.<)

@Lithophene
There’s now an ask feature on the tumblr thingymajigger that would be great for asking questions about/to Iain. And it’s great to be back :smile:

@Lizzy
Please tell me no Lizzys were harmed in the making of this post :sweat_smile:

@anon57826008
I’m glad you liked the part. It is more restrictive to the mortal shell, but given both the natures of angels in my world and the wonderful place this forum is, having a chimera was something I wanted to be available for the players.

@Joey_Lai
Well I’m glad your internet is back.
Many of the times it only means that the author is having other things on his/her plate and that the game will remain a while without being updated, at least to the public eye.
This is all too true. But equally true is the fact that I’ll come back like a boomerang (even if it takes some time)

@silent15
Typo bug squashed! (I think this may have been more of a fixed after updating issue on my part as it was already corrected when I went to fix it >.>

@Zebrawalker
No, no, and… no. I’m with @Lithophene on this one, that being a big bucket of worms I’m not touching. Believe me, there’re other buckets and issues. There’s also a really simple, basic reason too, which is a spoiler of sorts. Daniel is actually your nephew, so just… not going there. I mean, I could get into semantics about angel relations and what constitutes actual family opposed to the default of angelic siblings and why it might not really be considered incest, but the story isn’t going there, so I’m not.

@maveric619
I think it should be working now. Key word being think.

@bl00dragon
Maybe it’s too early/late but I couldn’t figure out what you meant by download and launch using my link so I think I found an alternative

So notes on the actual update that should be up if I figured this out correctly.
It’s back down to two scenes, but these should be completely done. I had to do this for my sanity. These two scenes are well over 30,000 words, but the word count comes more from width rather than depth, meaning that a single playthrough will be relatively quick at the moment. If you don’t want to try out one of the forty variations (8 weapons*5 attack vectors) feel free to come back when I’ve added depth, which will hopefully be soonish.

I actually had to redo the next couple scenes because I was overdoing it. This is a game about choice, but if I set up five choices, and each of those five choices have five choices, and so on and so forth… the game will never get anywhere in the plot. So I’m doing a major rewrite on the second of the upcoming scenes. I’m still checking consistency and continuity of the next (third scene overall, the one where you meet Daniel) but this is more or less done once I’m fairly certain that I’ve checked a few, somewhat circular, distinctions. I don’t want Gabriel to suddenly call Daniel by his name if you’ve never asked, for example. The order of questions asked or not is very important to me and something I view as critical to my design. While there are parts where order is superfluous, this isn’t one of them. I could write it simply where each answer/dialogue is completely independent of the others so the order of questions asked is irrelevant, but currently that doesn’t suit my style. Hence why this is taking a little to check because I sometimes get lost in my logic when I go to crosscheck what knowledge Gabriel has.

The third scene to be released in the near future (i.e. has substantial writing/coding done is one of my favorites and hopefully picks up the pace a little for those of you wondering when I’ll stop with the introduction choices and get to the good stuff :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The major changes thus far:

  • General grammar/flow
  • There are new section breaks. (The style of these is NOT finalized, but the words/sections are)–I wanted the sections to be set apart a little more, like acts in a play.
  • Number of saves has gone from 3 to 7 (for those of you running out)
  • Your angel blade should have been returned to you during the first scene (continuity error)
  • Gabriel should no longer leap off roofs that they never landed on (continuity error)
    *All 40 attack vectors, 20 comments on attack vectors and wing colors, and 20 comments on pre-fight plans/attack vector are done. (Assuming I didn’t break anything and miss it while testing.)

Thanks for all the support! As far as feedback, if you play through any of the paths and find certain ones resonating or lacking something please drop a note, especially about which parts seemed to work/might be better if it were rethought.

Snippets from upcoming scenes can be found on the tumblr page (so as not to overclutter this thread with miscellaneous extras).

@Dae-kalina
Ah, I’m sorry. Seeing as I haven’t been in the forums for awhile and reading a major of these posts,I didn’t know those details about Daniel. Just knowing he was kind of the son of Satan(or at least in a way) I was thinking how that would affect the story if you were in a relationship with him. But now that I know you’re kind of related… I’ll relinquish the thought. With what basic knowledge I had, I was just excited about thinking of your character possibly having a romance with a bad guy(or related to a bad guy). That’s why I was a little dissapointed when I seen Lucifer wasn’t going to be one, honest confession. scratches neck You just don’t really see that in games.

I got this when I chose to lead the charge

Wait… so, if Daniel is Gabriel’s nephew, and he can’t be an RO because (among other things) they are related, and Lucifer is Daniel’s grandfather, and he is not an RO either for hitherto unknown reasons…

Does that mean that Lucifer is Gabriel’s father?! :open_mouth:

It kind of hints towards that fact in the title.

@Dae-kalina, can I just say that months later, I still enjoy the little shadowboxing my Gabriel does? :joy:

@Zebrawalker
There are certainly opportunities for romancing bad guys, just not Lucifer or Daniel. Ryder is not even available to romance for a purely good Gabriel. That’s not to say you couldn’t try to romance him as a generally good Gabriel, but it would end badly and he wouldn’t be all that interested. A lot of characters, depending on alignment, will actually end up fighting against you in the second half of the story. There are a wide variety of RO of various alignments with different sets of ethical values.

@Lyanna
Thanks for the catch. That should be fixed now.

@KuraiHeka

All signs seem to point that way, no?

@Prof_Chaos
Shh… that’s clearly just a reference to Daniel though it does work for male Gabriels, which is why I thought about changing it but 1: the alliteration of Son of Satan is better than child and I’m not sure about switching it to Scion of Satan as 2: by making it ‘apparent’ the title refers to Daniel, it theoretically leaves the unveiling a surprise… though not really if you catch the heavy foreshadowing and hints.

@Lithophene
That shadowboxing is entirely your fault, so I’d hope so.

:blush: I just hope there’s some more to come. I know my Gabriel, in his mortal shell, would definitely like to invest in a punching bag. Gotta keep up that form! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I actually second this a great deal. My Gabriel is definitely the type to do this.

Maybe the RO can accidentally walk in on Gabriel working out the stress with the punching bag and as the RO walks in, Gabriel pulls a Captain America and punches the punching bag right off of the hook and sends it flying.

Gay, straight, whatever; if that isn’t both a clear declaration of badassery and a definite in with the RO, then it’s got to be damn close. I’d be surprised if the RO didn’t fall in love then and there if that happened.

I’d actually suggested working out with Iain before, heh. B) But that’s totally not me pining after him.

Odd question here so pls don’t judge me :raised_hands:.
Can.you romance the son of the devil?
Who can you romance in the game, and please could you give the “species” of said RO (if there are any)

If it is Daniel you’re talking about, then no. Though the question has already been answered.
If not, then I have no idea who you’re talking about.

Daniel’s a child and, as @Dae-kalina said, your nephew. So, that’s a no. There’s a full list of all romance options, their species, and their sexual orientation higher up in the thread. If I wasn’t on mobile at the moment, I’d go find it for you. They’re hidden under spoilers though.

@Lithophene @Alexodia
There are work-out scenes in the works (they’re just a fair ways down the road).
Yes, one of these options will be working with a punching bag. Also hand-to-hand combat, and running.

@moonwalkerdragon
Post #42 states some of the female RO.
Post #47 has some of the male RO.
I will state that there are werewolf, witch, human, demon, werepanther, angel, Fallen, reaper, warlock, and god/goddess ROs.
And by no means have I told you all the RO. I probably won’t because I’d like at least some of them to be a surprise.

I loved the story so far… It reminds me a lot of Shin megami tensei (Main series one) franchise for some reason… and the way you pictured Helel or should i say, Lucifer is also different, since they usually pictured him as arrogant and manipulative… “We need a different perspective for Lucifer!” i thought, and you did it… I’m gonna follow your work! :grin:
