Shinsengumi Historical Game - Very WIP

Definitely not a ninja but almost certainly a spy of some kind, maybe more of an investigator. He wore many hats, doctor, swordsman, spy, but never ninja.I think the reason he’s often depicted that way is that there’s kind of a false equivalence, it seems even in Japan in the modern day there are some people that think all Japanese spies were ninja.

Well obviously they weren’t that. By the same token they weren’t completely morally bankrupt, people are never that simple and especially in times of civil war they can’t be defined so easily. In so far as possible I’ll leave it up to the reader to decide.

As for romance… hmmmmmm. I have thought about it and I’m definitely going to implement relationship sliders whether or not there’s a chance of other things. I’m not entirely (or at all) confident in my ability to write compelling romances, but if there is demand enough for it there’s no reason at all that I can’t try.

I do hope you would consider trying. Hijikata! <3

I know that certain Shinsengumi members died quite early, are you planning to change it depending on the relationship between those characters and the MC?

Yeah you do. :smirk:

As for times of death it’s more than likely that each member will die when and where they’re supposed to, but how they die and whether or not you’ll be there to see it will be mostly down to the player. Kondo will always be executed by the kangaroo court that blames him for assassinating Sakamoto Ryoma, Hijikata will always be killed during the siege of Hakodate and the player might well go down with them.

There’s not really much more I can say without being spoilerific regarding possible alterations to history, only that it might not be quite the history you know.

Thank you so much for answering our questions!

I’m looking forward to your end results. XD

Questions mean interest and interest sustains me. I’m a big old interest vampire.

Okay so maybe not really, but it makes it so much easier to sit down and write when I consider the fact that people will be excited seeing an update of this.

I very much am exited to see this updated. You even have my favorite sword style as a choice.

i found this after being formally introduced to Hijikata and decided to stand my ground.

on the fourth line in the second paragraph it says line_break

Oh, now that’s embarrassing.

sneaks off to stick an asterisk in there

Question: would you be able to become Emperor yourself in this WIP…?

I’m sort of a military/commanding sort of guy, and I’d like to make choices on how I would manage my court/empire, and battle armies, sort of like the system in the “List Heir” series.

I think that this kind of aspect would be great, and would be deeply appreciated. But, if you don’t really have any plans for this sort of thong, I would still like it if you have it some serious consideration!

Throughout all of Japanese history, the royal family has been the same. The Emperor’s legitimacy comes from his descent from the goddess Amaterasu, so unlike China, there’s no vague concept like the Mandate of Heaven to legitimize a usurper. If you attempted to overthrow the Emperor and set yourself up as his successor, you’d just get killed for your trouble and go down in history as a despicable villain.

Also, the Emperor is completely powerless until the Imperialists win. It’s the Shogunate that controls things (but not the actual Shogun, as the Tokugawa family is a mess right now). What would make more sense with what you want (but would still be so unlikely that I can’t even tell you) is to be adopted into the Tokugawa to serve as the heir, which happened numerous times in Japanese history among daimyo clans and in fact is how the last two or three Shoguns were appointed.

And anyway, that’s clearly not the kind of game this is meant to be.

You may not set yourself up empress or emperor per se but just as the Shogunate you can be a shadow emperor or empress …

this time of chaos could have given us entirely different outcomes dependent on so much.

epilepsy warning

Will the samurai from Hyuga be making a cameo?

 good to know, thanks for answering my question as well. This is still a good WHO nontheless, and i will still play it

So happy to see a game in this setup.

Great start so far, I’m sad I did not get a chance to strike the big fella before Okita came up  but I guess we will get another opportunity °°

@Kyle as Leingod was so kind to point out (check you out doing my PR for me ) this isn’t really the sort of game for that, although I do have a possible project pigeonholed for after this is done which might tickle your fancy. Which is not to say there’s no room for advancement.

@Bagelthief @Leingod @Eiwynn: I should put you three on staff

I can neither confirm nor deny the presence of (specific) scruffy illiterate ronin.

He’s a bit of a glory hog, it’s just good that spotlighting hasn’t been invented yet else he would hog that as well. Gonna see what I can get done this weekend, probably gonna be mostly glossary stuff but we might get another scene out of it.

U should just settle for putting au!me in your game. did muso jikiden eishin ryu even exist back then tho? lmao

Is there a chance that we will be able to switch to the Shishi faction?

This is definitely an interesting game. You dont often see samurai games if at all actually.

Ha, maybe I should offer my beta testers cameos. According to Google, yes, which isn’t surprising, as far as I know koryu pretty much went unchanged after the Meiji Restoration since with the modernization of the Japanese military and abolition of the warrior class there was simply no need to develop sword (or pretty much any armed) technique any further.

There will be the oppurtunity indeed, probably more than one, one around the midpoint and one or two closer to the end.

Just incidentally, I approve of this avatar immensely, actually listening to Down With the Sickness right now as it happens. It is odd though. Samurai and ronin especially never really seem to go totally out of fashion, possessing that same romantic quality as knights errant and it actually surprised me that there was only one other game which drew from that particular well. I suppose it might be because it takes a certain amount of specialist knowledge to write about them convincingly. Not that I’d ever venture to call myself a specialist, in fact I’d barely venture to call myself a bum, but I nonetheless feel fairly comfortable with the material.

Speaking of being comfortable my weekend turned out to be not a very productive one (to coin a phrase “whoops”) being that writing glossary entries is boring as sin even for me who’s passionate about this stuff. I did manage to make some headway in the narrative but the additions aren’t ready to fire yet.
