Nest of Snakes (Chapter 1 Demo) 27/12/16

Bwaha ha! Thank-you! That was rather mortifying.

There will be a few other gods turning up but they’re all from ancient civilisations and religions no longer practised (as far I can figure with research) or my own culture (like Amaterasu). I know how frustrating and insulting it can be otherwise.

Thanks for the encouragement too. I did need it!

Thank-you so much! If I hadn’t already cried myself dead your kindness would make me start.

I’m sure you’ll make an awesome lone wolf.

I loved it! I love plot with intrigues between gods, and our mc was Zeus apprentice and a god too (even if they don’t have the whole power anymore). This is awesome!
Thw whole time I wanted to break Zeus in two. I surely hate him. I always hated him. Well… Besides that, keep up the good work.

Yes, thank-you! You have made my day!

Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty more reasons to hate Zeus and as you regain your powers you might even get the chance to act on those impulses. If I manage to finish and by some miracle I haven’t bored you, I hope you get an ending you love.

Love anything involving different mythologies. Very well done so far. Looks very well thought out. I saw that you mentioned amaterasu so I’m assuming there are other gods from different pantheons?

Hey thanks! Yes, there’s going to be a mix of gods from different pantheons who chuck in their own ideals and agendas but Amaterasu is the only one not from a dead religion. I’m a real mythology nerd so they’ll be plenty of references to other supernatural figures and legends.

Ahah alright then, it’s a shame about the romance thing, the tension between them is really good but i can see what you mean about the trust issues

Ya - Zeus is too afraid of being eclipsed; either by an offspring (swallowing Athena) or lover - besides his eye wonders too much to really establish a relationship with him. (classically speaking)

@OrigamiPencil - I enjoyed the demo so far - characterization is a strong point of your writing. I hope your story continues the way it has begun - if so, you’ll have a very good offering. Thank you for having the courage in sharing it.

I hope to see more soon.

I wish I had an evil laugh because this is the perfect moment to use it. Don’t worry about trust issues— you haven’t seen anything yet.

Really, thank-you! I didn’t think sharing would be so terrifying but everyone’s been really encouraging.

And you’re right on both accounts. Zeus can’t maintain relationships because he’s convinced he’s going to be usurped, hence the lack of trust. He opts for superficial ties instead. A lot of them.
Both traits are key to his character and resulted in the bad blood between him and the MC. There’s more at work there and I can’t wait to start flashing back.

Loved it! Greek Pantheon is my favorite, and you even managed to apply this dark atmosphere to it. Now, the whole “poor god” thing reminds me of Noragami, poor Yato is still working for 500 yen… There’s so many good wips this year. I can’t decide which one is my favorite.

Well, trust me when I say you don’t have to worry about that, because not only is this worth a review but it’s worth a good review too! (Huh, that kinda rhymes)

And the pseudo-noir title is well earned, plus I love the extra humor weaved in (like the image of greeting Zeus in your pyjamas and trying to hide that under the coffee table, it’s such a great mental image, I love it.)

Oh, hey! Quick Q because this world is interesting and I’m curious to learn more about it:

Since you mentioned that there are gods from dead religions, I’m curious if they’re treated any… differently?

Like, does having followers/an active belief ascertain to a kind of status? Or do the gods just not care all that much?

Also if so, do they ever get into fights about followers? Does our MC have anyone who believes in them?

(This might all be answered as you write, though, aha).

I suppose that answers your question? From what i understand, the followers determine how much power a god wield, it’s sort of a Noragami thing. (Sorry if you didn’t watch the anime, because i’ll probably release one or two spoilers in each post here…)

Ahhh, yeah, I must have missed that! Whoops.

I’m still curious if there’re ever any… disputes over followers. Or if being the deity of a dead religion changes how other deities look at you?

I mean, do they respect the really old gods for their wisdom? Or are they just kinda cast aside because they don’t have any followers therein power? (Also, if followers is tied to immortality, do they become mortal once they’re completely forgotten? That’d be extremely stressful for a dead religion’s deity, I can imagine.)

(I saw the first episode or two of Noragami, got too busy to finish it… or watch any TV/shows for that matter.)

All good questions! I just realised that some of my previous comments might have been slightly misleading (this is a long post, sorry).

@Zassuen Thanks! You’re spot on.

While I’ve chosen gods from dead religions (like Zeus) they’re mostly treated as active ones in this world. Deicide is a big theme in this so a few truly dead gods will be mentioned. I didn’t want to dump too much information on the reader to start with, but it will all come out eventually!

Answering your second question, most gods care very much—after all their power influences their standing in ‘divine society’ and stops them from being vulnerable. It hasn’t been introduced yet but Divine Society is the cut-throat god’s world of politics and manipulation. Most gods want power and those that don’t still need it to keep the brutal ones in check.

How the gods go about getting reputation/power depends on the individual. Zeus (well, I don’t know how much I want to spoil) owns many business ventures, including a media powerhouse. He uses a combination of money and media exposure to garner the gratitude of mortals.

I hope this answers your questions!

ZEUS IS GOING TO BUILD A WALL!

This is getting too close to future plot points for comfort. I guess there is no originality in this world…

I noticed that the character has a “Divinity” stat, does it naturally increase as the game progresses or can I choose to stay at a very low divinity? I like the idea of my character trying to abandon all this godhood bulls***t and just try to live her life as a mortal.
