This is a wonderful goal, and it is how I began to build up my writing too. Just take it one day at a time and as Mara says, every time you do something, it is a win.
Hello! I am slowly re-writing the 1st half of my game. My goal is to finally end this hiatus and upload a new version of chapter 1 by the end of the month.
I have a few projects Iām working on, many of which Iām taking back to the drawing board.
However, Iāve decided to commit to a shorter project. After the last year of insanity and chaos (lost my ma to cancer and moved out of my house when I got fired from work over a flat tire, quite literally) I think itās time to really start focusing on things that make me happy.
Which is writing and my family (and boyfriend and his kid).
So, my goals!
Get at least 1/4th of the project Iāve started (and am still debating on whether or not I should change up the mechanics) finished and up as a demo
Sleeping more than once every few days
Being kinder to myself
Write Honestly
And Write
So, for this month, Iām gonna focus on my newest project. Itās considerably shorter than the others Iāve been working on. Gotta go back and figure those out, put them up on a drawing board so I can figure out whatās stressing me out about them.
Also, figure out how to plot for IF overall cause it aināt like plotting for a traditional story.
Branching narratives tend to make that a bit difficult, ya know?
So I got a lot to work through, but Iām eager to do so!
The first thing comes into my mind is to search this thread, because I want to read othersā goals again, which motivates me as well. Andā¦ I am glad that this is still goingā¦ always motivates and inspires your writing days. I am so happy to read all goals of our fellow readers, and writers,-and yeah, also youā¦ lurkers, time to engage conversation with others.
Anyway, my goal for this month is to write and not just ideas and concepts flying around my mindā¦ I hope I reach something near or around 40,000 words this month while treating my sick, luckily not covid haha. Most of important, stay safe and stay healthy, donāt let your guard down, the invisible enemy (covid) is not yet defeated. Happy Writing Journey of May!
Thatās something I understand far more than Iād care to admit.
Though, for me, it meant taking a break from the business I was starting (massage therapist needs good wrists). I spent a lot of time on my computer while I let it mend, though I had to take the occasional break when it started smarting.
Which, in retrospect, likely didnāt help. At all.
I didnāt make the deadline I set for myself to post my first WIP by the end of April (or the previous deadline that was end of March), but Iām soooo close. The first part is as good as ready with over 25K words, and Iām so happy to have finally got to this stage, and also to share it with you all!
I am just doing some quick tests and random tests, so this should be up in the coming days - stayed tuned!
I also do not understand this. Is this a group talking about giving feedback or a specific group of people that is only allowed to give feedback to certain projects? If the latter, an idea would be to link it to the workshop, I feel that is created for this purpose (and lacking people actually giving feedback).
While Iām no expert, and have only been lurking around here for a number of years, I think these Support Threads are multi-functional. On one hand, theyāre a way for writers to put down their goals (which a number of us do), theyāre a way to keep track of our goals and if weāve met them, and also a way to gather information and input about writing overall, the various stages that comes with it, and also encouraging one another even as we struggle.
Itās a safe place to share our goals and plans for our writing despite the setbacks weāve encountered. Itās also a way to share our successes, which is often a good way to encourage other writers to keep trying in spite of fear or uncertainty.
Thatās how Iāve come to take it, anyway, after reading those these posts for the last year.
@TheChaosArchivist was talking about this support thread, how you describe it it sounds like you are talking about the monthly support threads we are in now
It will be a place to learn more about creating a successful beta testing programāfocusing on what we as writers want from the testers and how to ask that while maintaining public engagement.
Having a thread focused on the business side of writing would be good.
@Eiwynn has a good thought, there. It would make things more clear. One being moral support, the other being more āstory creationā support. Like, how to get feedback or how to bring a higher awareness to our writing in a way thatās polite and non-trollish.
Itās an interesting thought, to be sure. Thereās a lot of background work that may be confusing for some where others could be a major help (like plotting an actual Interactive Story, given a branching narrative can be difficult to plot out with all its nuances). Publication, marketing, editing, feedback, beta and alpha testing.
Thereās a lot a more business-orientated thread could work that would be greatly beneficial to everyone here, Iād say.
Which Miss Mara has just pointed out, as I was typing that out. And Iām not inclined to delete it since I took the time to write it, so itās two points on the same topic.
And, yes, giving better feedback is something everyone could learn or take a refresher over! Or how to take constructive criticism for what it is, or to give it without being rude or hurtful about it.
Like a teacher once told me, āI didnāt like itā tells the writer nothing.
I still feel that is what the workshop was created for partly (correct me if Iām wrong)? In my opinion it could be an idea to extend this and involve people in it that want to participate. This way, you also get real-life examples to discuss etc with your group. Right now, there is not much feedback going towards the workshop as well as the Hobby projects section, which is a shame for the writers. Then, setting up a new thread might even further reduce engagement if not combined with existing attempts.
No, not really. The workshop goal is to make writers that have a small complete story not apt for publication (less 35k) or an unfinished one that is not sure if they want to continue as a WIP or as a Hobby project.
With the workshop, those writers will obtain early feedback will help or decide if they want to make the story bigger if it is unfinished or gain knowledge for a future more significant project.
Here, it is all about how to ask for feedback in a proper professional development way and how to give the same professional quality level of feedback to others.
I was giving my train of thought to expand existing threads as they could do with more feedback instead of creating more new niche ones. No offense meant.
All the best in this endeavour though. Curious to see what it will turn out to be!
Yeah, but we can not force people to give feedback. I only provide feedback to people I know or asking me in pm because some people can not see others giving critical constructed feedback and consider an attack against the writer.
Stuff likeā¦ I think that scene has a too slow flow, and I will found more engaging if instead have to hear X lore in that scene. Have an option to say I am not interested in that. Or maybe be rude with that Npc.
Something like that can be considered offensive to some fans.
It is essential to learn how to conduct our betas to allow every one of our testers to feel included and keep the good spirits
Oops - I couldnāt understand why I couldnāt see the heart at all - I must be getting old! I got the likes now.
I feel such an idiot with my limited tech skills! Sorry for spamming this thread - looking forward to hearing everyoneās goals and hope this is a good month for everyone!
