Genies In June:

You are the lead singer of a struggling indie rock band. Your band members have vowed to quit and move on with their lives if your next show doesn’t change your fortunes. This band, your friends, are all you have, but they’re slipping away as creative differences, financial struggles, and lack of success threaten to splinter your group.

Then you find a genie in a lamp at a garage sale. The genie promises to grant your band money and fame, but with one cost: your very soul.

  • Play as male, female, or nonbinary
  • Romance a guitarist, bassist, drummer, or keyboardist

When you are forced to choose between losing everything or gaining everything and losing your humanity, what will you choose?

Projected length: 150k words

Genre: supernatural

This game will be similar to Meteoric, but with an indie rock band and a genie instead of a death metal band and an alien.

Here is a playlist I made for it:

Hi guys,

I’ve been watching some latest CRPGs lately, and got interested with dice rolling mechanic

but do you guys feel the dice rolling okay and fair as a game mechanic, or too much randomness?

I can already imagine some scenarios where you may get upset when dice roll doesn’t do you favorably, thus making you feel the stats build you’ve done carefully appear meaningless

or maybe I missed something important from the dice rolling mechanic itself, what do you guys think?

Have you looked at Breach: Archangel Job? It has a dice rolling mechanic. Inspired by DnD, I think? It gives options for difficulty/level of randomness. It might help inspire some ideas.

Personally, I don’t like randomness in IF. I’d prefer my choices to make a direct impact, either through specific choices leading to specific outcomes or through skill checks (though choices are better).

I loved how Disco Elysium did it, aka “fail forward”, when failing the dice leads to alternative scene or solution instead of “Lol congratulations, sucker, you are now barred from part of the story/are on the way to the bad end! :fu:

This is my first time trying to write something like this, so I want to see if anyone would be interested in the concept!

Years ago, a cold rejection that sparked rumors and quickly spread throughout your entire high school left you humiliated and drove you out of your beloved hometown for good. Or so you thought.

You haven’t been back since. But when money gets especially tight and the town’s local bakery offers you a job, you’re forced to return to the one place you swore you’d never step foot in again.

Beneath The Frosting (super goofy name, I’m aware, I might change it) is a story about romance, heartbreak and new beginnings. It’s rated 18+ for explicit language, (optional) sexual content, general adult themes and more.

Play as female, male or non-binary - straight, gay or bisexual.
Let your personality be shaped by your choices and customize your appearance.

Romance one of three options: your alluring new boss (f), a sweet flower delivery guy (m) or the very person who made you leave town in the first place (m/f).

The description I have right now likely makes the tone of the game sound more serious than it will be in the end. I’m aiming for a good mix between comedy and rawness. I’m planning on starting the writing process soon for the prologue. Ideally the game will have about 10-12 chapters, but that’s obviously way too early to say with absolute certainty. I just want to see if this is something others would be interested in reading/playing through.

I have this prologue for something I’ve been writing during my free time for quite a while now. It’s in ways inspired by some of the romance/drama WIPs in this community, and I’m wondering if anyone is interested in reading it!

Once Upon A Slam [working title]

a romance-heavy drama where you play as an 80s heartthrob/sweetheart fading into irrelevance in the mid-late 90s. Your last few movies bombed at the box office, tabloids stopped reaching out, and Hollywood execs have fully moved-on to newer, prettier faces. In a desperate attempt to salvage your career, your control-freak manager, unbeknownst to you, signs you up for the hottest new mainstream craze in America: professional wrestling.

In this industry that doesn’t take kindly to outsiders, navigate your way through a volatile locker room full of drama, sex, substances, backstage politics, and larger than life characters. Will you use wrestling as a leverage to revive your acting career or will you embrace the business completely?

Whether you like it or not, this is your last shot.

  • Play as male, female, or non-binary with customization options to immerse yourself in
  • Shape your actor-turned-wrestler’s personality
  • Act the role of a lifetime behind a persona or be your authentic self.
  • Romance, befriend, or sleep around with a varied cast such as your best friend, a hot-headed rival, an obsessive fan, your controlling manager, or even an old flame, among others.
  • Wear a mask! Or continue bearing the face America forgot.
  • Win over the locker room, antagonize them, or even make them pit against each other/
  • Learn wrestling terminology through the immersed eyes of a complete outsider entering the industry.

[rated 18+ for explicit language, violence, drug usage, sexual content, and other planned mature themes]

Hi hello!! So, I participated in Royal Road’s writing prompt event back in January (the prompt was Dragons in Space) and I kinda fell in love with this story, so I’m in the process of turning it into an IF! The original story is one of four “scenarios” that can happen based on MC’s choices at the start. As always when it comes to my projects, here’s some art!

Title: THE DRAGON’S LAMENT

They used to call dragons gods. The dragons came to Earth only to leave their progeny and then return to the stars. Creatures that didn’t eat, didn’t dream, and were worshiped as superior.

No one is supposed to find a hatchling before it leaves, but you did. Regardless of what you do, your life will forever be ruined by treading upon the divine.

You are not a good person in this one.

Scenarios

Scenario 1: You kill the dragon

  • 5-10 chapters expected
  • WIP

Scenario 2: You destroy the dragon’s wings

  • 14 chapters
  • DONE

Scenario 3: You become the dragon’s master

  • 10 to 15 chapters expected
  • EDITING, HALFWAY DONE

Scenario 4: You become the dragon’s friend

  • 10 to 15 chapters expected
  • EDITING, HALFWAY DONE
Content Warnings
  • Explicit language
  • Violence to fantasy creatures
  • HEAVY descriptions of gore (moreso at the start)
  • Body horror
  • Disordered eating (somewhat)
  • MC can (optionally) kill
  • Depending on your choices, MC can be killed
  • Suicidal ideation and an off-screen suicide
  • Cults, religiosity, and trauma

40k words right now
→ or about 13k per playthrough

It’s hard to approximate how long the full project will be, but my current estimate is about 120k words

This is one of my “edgier” works (though I’m sure I can always go harder lol) and something worth noting is that, as it exists right now, there’s no romance. I am planning on adding two ROs (one male, one female) but I want to keep the scope relatively small. I won’t be releasing a demo until the romance for at least one scenario is done.

Also, as this was originally a fiction piece rather than planned out as interactive, the chapters are smaller than what I consider typical for IF

While this isn’t an IF that fits the typical mold, I hope you all will still be interested in it :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

hi! i’m currently working on SECOND ACT, an IF in which you’re reincarnated into a fantasy novel. (if you like the otome isekai genre, this is for you!)

the blurb for anyone interested:

You die, and when you open your eyes, you’re on the edge of a cliff.

Somehow, the webnovel you were obsessed with in high school is your new reality. You’ve landed in the middle of a civil war, inhabiting the body of the story’s crown mage— the protagonist’s right hand and closest confidant. The mage, you realize, whose shoddily-written death in the middle of the story is what spurs the protagonist into winning the war. But there you are, unharmed on the night of your supposed murder.

Everything derails from there. Nothing is as it seems, and this story is far more twisted than you had been led to believe. Despite the changes caused by your arrival, you think you still know how to reach the story’s fated ending, and you hold out hope that all you’ll have to do to make it out alive is fight a few little battles with your overpowered magic.

(The thing is, you’re growing unsure about whether the ending you read is truly a happily ever after.)

Well, one way or another, you’re determined to reach an ending and get home. What kind of ending, and whether it matches destiny’s plans for you— that, you’ll figure out along the way. Good luck; plot armor can’t help you now.

would love any thoughts and opinions!

hello! I have been working on my WIP for a little while now and I am planning to release the Prologue sometime next month, so I figured I would share the concept over here too!

The Colors Of August (Greek Island Slice-of-Life IF)

For as long as you can remember yourself, summertime has beckoned you to your grandmother’s home, in the idyllic island of Zakynthos, Greece. You have dipped your toes in the golden brown sand, delved into the crystal blue depths of the Ionian sea, and made memories to last you a lifetime beneath the scorching Mediterranean sun, your flock of close-knit family and friends always by your side in your carefree summer escapades. Your quaint seaside village has been a haven, a specter of a time bygone, a dreamland oasis.

However, this year, something dark and sorrowful stirs beneath the tides, a shared loss reflected in everyone’s eyes. A real estate mogul is aiming to purchase the seaside lot and re-purpose it into a luxury hotel. If they are successful in their endeavors, the familiar taverns, homes and shops, including your grandmother’s own coffeehouse, will be bulldozed over to make room for tall spires of concrete and marble.

The sunlit reverie of your youth is coming to an end. You may never get to spend another summer season like this in Zakynthos. There is thus only one thing left to do: Make the most of the time you have left.

The Romantic Options

The Local (Lukas/Lukia)
The boy/girl next door, L has been your steadfast companion every June through August. The only other kid in the village exactly your age, unlike you, L is a permament resident of Zakynthos and holds no desire to change that fact. Characterized by a sunny disposition, a zest for life and a complete lack of shame, you don’t believe you have ever seen L without a grin on their lips.

Close as you are, with how deeply they are entwinned with island culture, it is very likely that after this summer you will never see them again. The possibility makes longing swell in your chest, or could it be something else which is making your heart gallop?

Brother’s Best Friend (Atlas/Athena)
Though distant, stoic and often biting in their remarks, A acts as the group dad/mom, ensuring that you have drunk enough water, put on a sufficient amount of sunscreen or remembered to take your jacket with you.

A is also very honest and straightforward about their perception of you; you are just a kid they are obligated to watch out for through the bonds of friendhood. They are fiercely (sometimes annoyingly) protective of you and will support you through thick and thin, while buying you a stuffed toy like you are still five years old.

But what if you want them to see you as more than just a kid? Is this your last chance to make an impression on them?

The Tourist (William/Willow)
W had no intention of imposing on your grandmother’s hospitality so long, but a sudden break up has them deciding to prolong their stay in Zakynthos. Not that they infringe all that much, seeing as they are quiet as a mouse and twice as skittish.

W is in many ways a mystery, intentionally so, you get the impression. Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a need for change, they are the newest addition to your little group.

Will do you able to coax this intriguing stranger out of their shell? And perhaps most importantly, why do you want to so badly?

The Business Mogul (Stefan/Stefania)
S is a suave and confident playboy/girl, who seems to take a lot of pleasure in teasing you. Shameless in their hedonism and even more unashamed in their business acumen, S has come to Zakynthos to survey what they are determined to make their property. Having a wild summer while doing so, is really just a coincidental plus.

S also has their eye on you as their favourite person in the island already. Is that good or bad? You are tempted to find out, to dive deep into their dazzling and hazy world of glamor and grime, but you are not quite certain a single person in your life would approve of such an interest.

For anyone interested, here is my Tumblr, where I answer asks, give out updates, etc! @colors-of-august-if on Tumblr

Hello! I haven’t released a demo yet, but I have been writing my story for a little while. Now that it’s reached a decent length, I’m thinking about letting it out to the public soon!

I’m a first-time writer, a complete beginner when it comes to coding, and a teenager who’s loved interactive fiction. After playing so many amazing ChoiceScript games, I’ve finally decided to try creating one of my own.

The project is currently called The Prodigal’s Road. It’s a story about faith, doubt, family, grief, forgiveness, and the questions that don’t always have easy answers.

You play as a young adult who left Christianity years ago. When your estranged father–a pastor with little time left to live–asks you to accompany him on one final road trip, you reluctantly agree. Together, you’ll travel across the country to visit people whose lives intersected with his ministry: a woman haunted by a choice she made decades ago, a veteran struggling with what he witnessed overseas, a widower wrestling with unanswered prayers, and many many others (I’d love to hear suggestions on this).

Each stop along the journey explores a different question. Why does suffering exist? Can people truly be forgiven? What happens when the Church fails? How do you keep believing when God seems silent? More importantly, what kind of person do you become when confronted with those questions?

This is a very personal project for me. I’m a Christian, and my faith is naturally going to influence the story. I too have had numerous moments of doubt and hard to answer questions, and I thought maybe there are others out there who have felt the same. I don’t want to write a sermon disguised as a game, nor do I want to force anyone toward a particular conclusion. My goal is to create a space where players can step into the protagonist’s shoes, meet people from many walks of life, and wrestle with difficult questions alongside them. I want to be respectful and realistic.

The game will not feature romance (I think!). The focus will be on character relationships, personal struggles, and the evolving relationship between the protagonist and their father. The protagonist’s gender will be selectable, and choices will shape their outlook, relationships, and responses to the people they meet throughout the journey.

Since this project is still in its earliest stages, I’d love to hear any thoughts, concerns, suggestions, or questions you might have. What sounds interesting? What would you like to see explored? What potential pitfalls should I be aware of? Thank you for reading this blurb, and thank you in advance for any feedback. I’m excited to learn and improve as I work on this project.

I don’t know if this is the right thread to post it in.. this ended up being a lot longer than I meant it to be! Please let me know.

I enjoy exploring religion and theology and do think that is an interesting concept. I’d expect some people to be harsh towards your game, but the forum encourages friendly discourse so hopefully it does not deter you.

I would like a game like that to not assume my beliefs and allow me to express disbelief, changing views etc and that be reflected but ultimately it’s up to you what kind of story you want to tell. I look forward to seeing your demo if you decide to release it.

This sounds interesting! I do think that, for the choice to have faith to be meaningful, you’ll also need the choice to lose faith or not have it in the first place by the time the story begins.

I’m also wondering about the protagonist’s estrangement from their father- is it just because of different religious beliefs or is there another reason that caused the estrangement, with faith being the excuse to bring them back together? I find it, idk what the right word would be but, a bit suspicious? I don’t know the story you’re telling, but at first glance it reads to me like the father saw they couldn’t be family unless they share the same beliefs, and is trying to take their child down this road to mend their relationship. I could be wrong though, let me know if I am

Otherwise, I guess I’m a bit worried about the potential linearity of the story as a choicescript game. For example, I can imagine that the story spends a lot of time with the father-child relationship eventually being mended. Is there a choice where that doesn’t happen, where (for example) the protagonist chooses neither religion nor their father? Or maybe in another way, the protagonist having their relationship with Christianity mended BUT not having the heart to mend their relationship with their father before the father passes?

Either way, I wish you luck on this project!

No questions or suggestions, just to say your project sounds very captivating and I’d love to read the heck out of it. Pretty unique idea too, there aren’t many IFs that make faith part of the setting, let alone explore it more thoroughly, and faith is important enough part of human identity that we have several terms for absence of it.

Understandably so! I have no intention to make my game an affront to anyone, and it is my dearest hope that everyone can have respectful, kind, and meaningful dialogue. For example, if there is anything I include that could be worded differently, I will do so!

Yes, I think that’s what makes writing this story so compelling to me! I want to give the most realistic range of stances players can have and develop. When I release the demo, I will take all feedback since there are probably ones I’ll miss.

The player will begin with having lost their faith (and I’ll also include choices where they felt like they never believed in the first place). I won’t be including the choice to still be practicing Christianity at the moment of the story’s beginning.

This will be customizable. I’ve included several options for the players to have left the town, their father, and the faith (all can have separate reasons or just one potent one). You are correct in that the father wants to mend his relationship with the player; he is not trying to convert them “back” though!

Yep! Depending on the player’s choices, the father could be one of the worst people to them. There are paths where he hurt the player, and the player can decide that some things cannot be forgiven. Or, vice versa, religion is something the player cannot reconcile with but is willing to let their father back into their life.

Thank you for your encouragement, and yes, hard agree on this! While I have seen IFs that have wonderful world building that includes politics and religion, there is always room for more.

My biggest goal in this project is to view the different lives and opinions of others through the lens of this person who left their old life and beliefs for various reasons. I want to bring up these Big Questions™ and have my audience engage with them too.

Thank you so much for your questions and feedback!

This sounds totally up my alley and I’d love to playtest it and follow your progress when you’ve got a demo  I’m a Christian myself and am always interested in seeing religious themes done well. As has been mentioned, it’s not a topic that’s commonly explored in games.

I will say though that I think your game is going to target a bit of a niche within a niche. Most games here seem to get some kind of audience at least, so if done decently well I tihnk you’d have a strong core fanbase, but it might not be a large one (especially if there’s not much in terms of romance options…not necessarily a bad thing, but it does limit the audience).

I don’t say this to discourage you, but rather the opposite. Even if you get some complaints, or the audience is just slow to come to you, or you feel discouraged for whatever other reason, if you stick to your vision and do it well I bet you’ll hit home for your core audience. You might give them something to think about, or comfort in their own daily struggles, or what have you, and that’s a powerful thing.

I for one am looking forward to the demo.

I’m also a Christian, and I’m really looking forward to this for the same reasons. It’s a great idea, and one that is rarely found in IF.

I’ve included some aspects of faith in my first WIP (you have the option of playing as a member of the clergy, which means you’d see more of it), but it isn’t as central as it is in your work, though I do have another idea planned which is Biblically-oriented and where faith takes center stage (you play a prophet in that one).

Hey, welcome! I’m on the younger side of writers too, so it’s always nice to see other younger creators around here.

Don’t feel discouraged by being a first-time writer or a beginner with coding. Everyone starts somewhere, and interactive fiction is a great way to learn as you go. The most important thing is to have fun with the project and tell the story you want to tell.

It’s also pretty rare to see a Christian-based IF game. I think it’s always interesting to see people explore themes and perspectives that aren’t as common in the IF space! Good luck with the project, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of it whenever you’re ready to share.

One stance you may not have considered is spiritualism without religion. You don’t have to include it obviously, but it could be interesting to you. I largely use it as a catch-all for non-religous but still believe in something greater. And that can be the universe itself, energy or rebirth.

It’s quite a vast definition since it can cover people who consider mindfulness important for their soul, or people who believe in reincarnation without any gods or divinity included. I just figured I’d share my thoughts on the subject.
