Interest Check Thread

Ahhh I’ve never posted on here before, sorta scary.

I’ve been wanting to post an intro post on tumblr but I figure I should do an interest check first.

Death wish- that’s the title. It’s basically about MC who works as a journalist. They are super absorbed into their work, mainly because they aren’t very good at it. Every story they want to write either gets turned down or scrapped. This pushes them to get sucked into work. Work, work, work. Their partner barely ever sees them anymore and they always miss dinner.

MC gets a call one day. They are informed that their partner has been found deceased. The autopsy comes back, murder! The investigation goes on for a couple months before all leads dry up. The case is closed much to the MC’s dismay. They decide to take it upon themselves to get revenge.

Mc becomes a vigilante, albeit a terrible one. They can’t fight, not especially smart, definitely not very charismatic, and certainly not rich. Not even MC’s father-in-law is much help, even though he is the mayor.

Along the way, the MC can meet, befriend or even romance five characters. Sarah Mei, the coworker who is dragged into the mess. Nikolai Popov, the informant who really just wants to take a five year long nap. Eli/Ellie Warren, an ex-hero who just wants to get back in the game. Juliet/Julien Parrish, the socialite whose cold exterior hides, the heart eyes they are secretly sending the MC. And finally Death himself, the suspect of the MC’s partners death (Messed up I know).

The MC and their companions are dragged into the underworld of Esper. They soon come to the realization that the work is much more dangerous than expected. The rotten roots of Esper do far deeper than imagined. It’s not long before the mission turns into a death wish.

(This is the first time I’ve written in awhile so it isn’t perfect but I truly like the idea. Just want to know if it sounds interesting or if I should work on it more.)

So far from what you’ve written it sounds pretty cool! The fact that the Mc is just horrible at everything they do allows for a lot of different outcomes like funny training montages or the gaining of some mythical abilities that they may or may not be bad at too depending on how it goes. All in all sounds like a really cool idea!

Not sure where to ask this, but I am genuinely curious… Would you romance a nonbinary or agender romance option?

  • I am actively interested in romancing Non-Binary / Agender ROs.
  • I would romance a Non-Binary / Agender RO if they interest me, it makes no difference.
  • I would romance a Non-Binary / Agender RO if they interest me, though I would prefer a man/woman.
  • I generally am not interested in romancing Non-binary / Agender ROs, though there might be an exception.
  • I would never romance a Non-binary / Agender RO.

I mean, this isn’t going to change what I do for my own rewrite but I just wanted some insight on general perceptions. I might make a whole Poll Thread regarding gender and romance even though I already did one before just to discuss character-centric things not brought up in the last one.

The Would you be interested in romancing an asexual character? thread is a good place for some related feedback on romancing gender nonbinary people.

I would love to romance more non binary or agender ROs :two_hearts:

I am not sure there is a ton of useful information to be gained from a poll as broad as that - perhaps more specific discussion like the interesting discussion on the polls you made the other month may be more fruitful (and if I am going to be very honest, it is a bit tiring to hear a lot about whether people find certain demographics attractive). If you would like to write more nonbinary romances, please do go ahead and do it regardless of numbers!

Hey, everyone.

So, I’m currently working on A Realm Divided - but I need a secondary project to pivot between to avoid accruing burnout—something smaller, more focused and dynamic, and something that takes me out of the fantasy world/genre.

My proposed idea is a title known as The Shadows Inside - a science-fiction psychological survival horror experience.

Details Inside!

Year: 2634

Humanity has reached the golden era.

The early development of ionic energy and its subsequent technologies has shot us into the stars. Intergalactic travel was born, and with it - our newly emboldened desire for exploration and colonization.

Sprawling stations, empowered colonies, and heavily reinforced ‘bases’ spread throughout the known universe, each powered through the pinnacle of technology…

The Core.

Standing at the center of every known human town, city, colony, or abode was a Core - a multilayered, multifaceted structure built upon harmonizing ionic energy and channeling it through highly intelligent AI built to serve as the mainframe of human societies.

Eyes to the future, minds to the stars - a perfect universe… right?

The question being…

What happens when highly catalyzed energy interacts with the brain, a mind… or even an AI built to think like one?

Stay for the freakshow.

Above is primary lore backing it. The Core will serve as a rogue-AI antagonist, mutilating and transforming human life and bodies through a mixture of machinery and forced AI-integration into extreme horrors... while separately subjecting the player (you) and the many inhabitants of the setting (the I.D.E. Warner) to horrific psychological torture, hallucinations, and more as part of its games.

Heavily inspired by a mixture of Dead Space and System Shock, my plans with The Shadows Inside are to create a thrilling horror experience in a science-fiction setting. I’ve already begun work and will attach a few sample screenshots.

POLL: Is this something you’d find yourself interested in?

  • Yes, I would be!
  • Possibly.
  • I don’t think so.

To any who’ve seen my work thus far on Estheria, rest assured I haven’t slowed down on the project in any substantial way. I just need something to avoid burnout and this provides that flexibility.

Take care, you’re all fantastic.

Hola. So I wanna make this lil’ game and was just wondering. Don’t have any solid plans yet, mostly just vague ideas so bare with me.

[[Fallen (WIP)

You, a human, have been tasked with saving reality as we know it. You are to subdue or eliminate the threats, whichever it may come to.

Your targets? The Twins of Blasphemy–the incarnate of Life & Order as well as the incarnate of Death & Chaos. The demonic angel and the angelic demon.

An endevour few would even consider—even fewer would take. But you’ve always been one of a kind, haven’t you?]]

Basically, after a shaman had multiple vissions of a great calamity, you (along with a companion) have snucked into a private institute where the plane-touched (angels, demons, souls, etc) mingle.

There you must keep an eye on the two beings who were prophesized to bring about the apocalypse. (Depending on the choices, either only one, both or even neither will cause it.)

You can choose to befriend them and slowly gain their trust or antagonise them and consequently convince others to kill them.

Again nothing very concrete yet, but what do you think so far?

Little update: I’m actively working on the project now and have (very amateurishly) set up a tumblr blog for questions and to track my progress. So, if you’re interested… go here

…oh, almost forgot to mention: it has a name now! I decided on Орлёнок (Eaglet). For various reasons. Mostly, I think it fits thematically.

Now, we all have seen dozens of superhero stories to varying degrees, about a hero, a villain, a sidekick, a vigilante, etc. Something I am actually curious about is whether or not people would be interested in a story that has heroes in the background but just… Honestly this is just me being curious more than anything else, sometimes I just have an idea that pops in the dome and I’m curious about other perspectives.

Focuses on someone who is not involved in that side of things, I’ve always been curious myself about writing from a perspective of someone who doesn’t particularly ‘see’ all the inner workings of being a superhero. For them, they just see the occasional news clips, the cards, the action figures, and the unbelievable amount of damage that powers can cause. You could choose how you view them, but you definitely wouldn’t understand much about heroes going in.

Maybe it would be considered ‘boring’ to be the civilian, but honestly I myself would like to see a change from always seeing the perspective of those directly involved with heroes since heroes and those whose lives are framed around them would be a pretty small amount of the overall population.

This isn’t like, a full post for a plot or anything, I am trying to gauge interest in the vague idea before spending a bunch of time on it. Though personally I do find it appealing. A huge part of it would be the integration of powers into everyday life, and you yourself probably would be powered, you just wouldn’t be a hero. I also think that being a ‘hero’ means there is little focus on people being normal people and living their daily lives and how a good chunk of the population having powers would just change the way you live life.

I understand how this could be considered ‘too vague to get a good read.’ Though I would love to hear people’s opinions and if you’d be able to vote on the poll

  • I would love something focused around a more ‘civilain’ perspective.
  • I think it could be interesting, though I have reservations.
  • I feel pretty neutral about it.
  • I imagine it’s pretty boring to know there are heroes around and not to be involved.
  • I would hate to just be a ‘normal civilian’ as a Main Character, even if heroes aren’t the focus.

I am a new explorer to “Choice of Games”. I have been exploring many of the platforms for creating narrative games such as Twine, Inky, Narrat and others. I spent some serious time with your product today and decided to share some images from an idea I have with the community. This is a collection of screenshots from multiple screens but should give you an idea of the story, images and narration I am trying to accomplish.

Story Opening:

Codex for the Song of Life:

Your forum has been extremely helpful, the Wiki even more so. I would create a link on your main page to the Wiki for those considering creating games with your product. Just a gentle suggestion. Hope you enjoy what I’ve done over about a five-hour period of working with your Choice of Games product.

Best Regards,

Michael

I just have to say that your story looks very cool. If possible, would you mind providing a synopsis of your story? From the screenshots you’ve provided, I like what I see, but I’d like an idea of the overall plot.

And welcome to the forum! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Lenico,

Thank you for the kind words and warm welcome. The story is based on a series of stories I’ve been writing for some time now. I have two published books but with all self-published authors, it is like dropping a grain of sand on a beach and asking all the people visiting to find that one grain amongst all the others. Ha!

The story idea here is that it is a story about the struggle of a protagonist that finds themselves thrust into a story not of their own choosing. It is about all the characters who join them as they discover the truths that are driving the conflicts suddenly thrust upon them. It is about the roles the others play both minor and major in helping them to find out the reasons behind the Chant of Life.

It will be a character based, high fantasy based interactive novel with deep lore concerning the races, cultures, religions, struggles, and most importantly moral choices we are all faced with making moment to moment in our lives.

It will be about the consequences of those choices and how they might affect future outcomes, and how life is not about an end goal, but a journey and how we all struggle together to find ourselves and hopefully each other through it.

I would expect to see a lot of changes in what I initially released; this was just a test to see if I could find a development platform that would allow me to create this story that would feel like each journey was unique for that person taking it. I want people to come away having felt like they were the story, and the story was about them, their choices, their consequences, their journey.

I have lots of different stats I want to track that will help to enhance your sense of your journey with the first one being Story Morality; Good, Neutral, or Corrupt. There are many other factors and elements I would like to roll into it as well, but we’ll see. I am just getting started with this platform and reading the Wiki to see how to best approach the design and construction to make it unique and compelling. The artwork will change as well, I would like to compose some sound for it as well but those are later production elements that can be added in once the main story and artwork is complete.

I hope that helps answer your question. Bottomline, this is a journey I am beginning to take, and we’ll see where it will take us. Thanks for being so kind.

From the synopsis, I am even more interested now. Thank you for that :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

If you don’t mind me asking, what is the name of these books? If they’re anything like what you’ve written here, I think I’ll like them very much.

As I can see this is your first time here, I’d recommend you to check out some of the other threads on the forum. They all have interesting discussions which can open your eyes to many things you would’ve never even thought about. In particular, I recommend the monthly writer’s support threads, they help me greatly. September 2023 Writer Support Thread
And don’t hesitate to participate yourself, that is the point of a forum afterall, heheh.

Finally, I’d just like to recommed a few IF’s that I think would benefit you having a look at.

  • Infinite Sea Series. (Hosted Games)
  • Choice of Rebels. (Choice of Games)
  • I, the Forgotten one. (Hosted Games)

These games are similar in genre, so I think you would benefit in taking a look.

Have a great day! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

The first book is “Elyana of Dunstead”, the second one is “Stranger in my Inn” Here is a link that will give you the choice of many online eBook retailers if you are interested. Eugene Willson. I publish under the pin name of Eugene Willson not my real name.

Elyana of Dunstead is the first of a three-book trilogy. I published the first one to gauge interest, but I do not have a lot of understanding about how to succeed in the world of self-published books. I haven’t started on book 2 or three yet but will be in time. The second one is shorter and meant to be a stand as it is story. I would recommend starting with The Stranger in my Inn. I think most people would really enjoy this story.

I will look at the recommendations you have given me and purchase any I have an interest in to help support the authors. Again, thanks for the interest, thanks for sharing.

Best Regards…

I feel like the concept on it’s own is as interesting as any can be, and the thing that’s worth considering is the relationship the MC would have with the heroes of their world, the nature of the world itself, the nature of those heroes and obviously the story. As I can see it, there are sort of two tracks that you’re laying down for a story with this concept.

The first is that the MC is one of a select few who has powers, but just isn’t part of the super teams for some reason. The interesting follow-up questions as I can see them are: Is the MC just a person who happens to have powers, but chooses not to be a capital H Hero? Do they just live their life and never use their powers except for mundane things: if they’re running late for work do they bust out the teleportation? Why? Or do they use their powers to save the occasional distressed cat from a tree or rescue people from a burning building but will not, or can not become a proper Hero? Does that mean the heroes are elitist, or from a different social class inherently, or are they bad or not worth joining for some reason? Is this supposed to be a story of self-discovery- of the MC coming to terms with the need to make a choice about what to do with themself now that they have powers, learning the consequences of sitting on the sidelines, or learning that there is more than meets the eye to the superheroes of the world and what it actually means to be one?

The second is that superpowers are common enough that there are just a decent amount of people who have powers but aren’t really superheroes. This raises pertinent questions about the nature of what it means to be a hero- obviously it’s not the powers that mean you’re a hero, so what is it? Is it purely the willingness to be a hero? Or are there logistical, or maybe even political issues that crop-up when one decides to be a proper Hero? Do heroes need to register with the government, or give up something to be a hero? Is the story about the MC choosing not to put on a cape and tights because they’re not about that life, or is it because being a hero in a world where plenty of people have superpowers means giving up something that many might not be willing to give up?

I have more reservations about the second track than the first. It’ll be probably be a slower, more cerebral type of story and as I’ve laid it out(and not taken into account any amazing ideas you may have) seems like the MC would be defined by their choice not to do something cool. I think the concept itself is basically faultless as a cool idea, but the key question to answer is why isn’t the MC a hero?

As what Leinco said, you can check out the monthly writer support threads to have a good gauge of what we’re doing and what is to be expected. I show up often there. There are plenty of interesting discussions and I am sure you can fit in nicely into at lease one of them.

How to participate yourself? Once you have a demo ready, you can start your own WIP developer diary thread. Not all writers do this, but many do.

Indeed, this is a journey that you yourself are about to undertake. Protagonists with an inner conflict are perhaps the most tragic ones ever!

Honestly I would love a if where we play as punisher/rorschach style anti hero without super powers in a world with super-heros and super-villains.

If there is going to be a superhero game Personally I’d love a superZero kind of game. Kinda like the people from specks community college from community college hero game. Like the powers of generating large amounts of smoke, or like the lady with the power that creates physically harmless, glitter bombs. Or maybe some thing like my hero academia where there’s usually powers that also have drawbacks. Like the sugar rush guy, who the more sugar he consumes the stronger he gets, but he also becomes stupider. There hasn’t been a superhero game created like that yet. I could be cool to be able to pick your power, but that powers useful it’s not something to completely and only rely on.

Could be fascinating, if superheroes are treated at least somewhat like in the universe of the boys, in that they also double as the foremost celebrities of the world, one reason could very well be that not everybody wants to be a celebrity or put their life on the line everyday.
