Interest Check Thread

Hello everyone! I originally planned for this to be coded in CS and twine but after losing my files for CS I decided to focus on the twine version instead!

Apologies to anyone who has been waiting for the dashingdon demo but if it eases your mind, the twine version has been released and I have a Tumblr blog for Dev logs!

It’s mythical (the one in my story) because it doesn’t exist.

A few weeks ago I’ve had a dream (corny, I know, but bear with me here) which I found rather compelling and thought ā€œIf I manage to work this out, it would be a pretty fun story.ā€

The details of the story are not yet final, but I have a rough idea of what I’d wish to achieve.

It would be a tale following two siblings, one of whom being you! Audible gasp, shock-horror. It would focus on their quest and their relationship. Siblings orphaned in a world teetering in the uncanny valley between low fantasy and Metro 2033. Not necessarily post apocalyptic but certainly derelict. Think of the fringes of a Kingdom ravaged by banditry and vicious creatures.

Why low fantasy? Well, magical powers and Arcana in general are seen as a curse. A bad omen. The gifted or cursed (depends on how you look at it and how far away the Justiciars are, really) are shunned and tormented by the people while the Crown persecutes and rounds them up behind the walls of The Citadel never to be seen again.

Sounds like none of your damn poor orphan business. Until either you or your sibling (narrative choices, hooray!) start to awaken hidden magical powers… and the rozzers are on your tail. Audible gasp, shock-horror part two.

Follow their story - with distinct flavour depending on your choices - as they flee the city they’ve always known. Protect your sibling, get stronger and help keep their nature a secret or try and control fantastic cosmic powers while not bringing doom upon the only family you have left… or going crazy. Bicker like you’re rivals because your sibling’s the eldest and a know-it-all, darn them!; have the chemistry of two life-long best friends; or try and balance a relationship that’s strained to the limit because of this new reality you’ve both been suddenly thrust into.

Maybe start a brotherhood of monster hunters and bounty hunters?

In any case one thing is certain, you managed to avoid capture thanks to a man that has the same markings of magic as you (plural) do and he says he knows where you (plural²) can find answers: the conclave beyond the sands of the flooded desert. But first, you need to train.

While I don’t know exactly what’s the ultimate goal of the story (if there is a MacGuffin, who’s the villain, why are you orphans, WHO AM I!? Cough sorry, etc), thought I’d gauge the forum’s gut reaction to this pitch. Anyone fancy the idea? Let me know. Thanks!

I’ve always wanted to experience stories of family relationships and this wants to explore that since asking me at the feet of a single mother/widow the brother’s would be interesting. I’m interested

Your story idea actually reminds me of another that was of a similar premise that I’ve read here in the past. Though I can’t recall it’s name at the moment unfortunately in any case I like the idea

Are you thinking of The Nascent Necromancer? Or something even older?!?

Nope pretty certain it was called something else and definitely not adult rated as that one lol

Though I can’t recall much at the moment what I do recall there was a older sibling maybe it was a friend. There was laws of the land that magic was illegal and frowned upon and you had to keep your powers a secret. Worked for a time something happens in the course of living life that causes it to become known and while escaping you get caught or something like that.

Like I said I can’t recall to much at the moment but it was good little demo that I can say safely not sure if it was dashingdon only or not though. Been a while since I read it and it was probably last year when I did.

It’s probably Demon: Recollect? The game is also already out fyi.

Nope not that one either though I do have it it’s a good game  thanks though.

I most likely have read it but it won’t come to my mind right now just like for you :joy_cat::joy_cat::joy_cat:

If it helps, I have no idea what either of you are talking about. :yum:

:joy_cat::joy_cat::joy_cat: there’s an another IF where the people with power/magic were seen as bad guys and MC and sibling eho are orphans and one of them gets some type of power/magic and they run from the authorities that hunts them…

Lol no worries and did recall another tidbit after some sleep. The one group that works for the authorities wants them to come along peacefully. While they get saved sorta from this other group still everything is a vague memory at this point but the recent wip idea post was similar enough to spark the memory.

Hi, long-time lurker here with my first attempt to write an if-story. For a while now I wanted to write my own book (title of which is still TBD) and gather the courage to post it. English is not my first language (so there will be grammar, punctuation, and possible spelling mistakes :c ).

I’ve got the idea for my book through the love for anything related to King Arthur and his legends. Considering that I’m currently in the prosses of writing my master’s thesis about him, I’ve decided to use what I’ve learned as an inspiration to create something of my own.

I considered making a proper post; however, I’ll hold that thought until the first chapter is complete and if this is something you guys would be interested in reading since what I have so far is… uhh quite early in development :3

Plot

You are a young knight in your 20s that has recently joined the Knights of the Round table. The story starts just as you embark on your first real quest with Sir Lancelot at your side. As the two novice knights, you are asked to investigate the disappearance of a priestess.

It seems pretty straightforward, right?

Well…

Romance Options

So far, I have planned 5 (maybe 6 possible romance options).

Those that appear in the first chapter are:

Lancelot (M), Mordred (M), Merlin (M/F – gender selectable)

With introduction of Morgana (F) and Nyneve (F) coming later in the first chapter.

I quite like this, it sounds so promising. Great job so far, hope you keep this up! (Also good luck with your master thesis!)

Hello again!

Currently I have two published Hosted Games, and a third one in the publishing queue. However, I’ve thought about several concepts for my fourth (or even fifth/sixth?) next game(s), and I have doubts about some the ideas I’ve been planning. Mainly if they’re interesting/popular/fun/good enough to warrant a story focusing on that idea or not.

An idea I then had was to create yes/no choice polls for each of them, to see how relatively (un)interesting they’d be as a rough estimate. Not like any of this is binding, but just to get some extra direction for my future plans :stuck_out_tongue:

Here we go…! (open comments are also welcome!)

A story where you’re always an evil being, and can only affect the methods of your cruel actions (instead of being able to ā€œredeemā€ yourself, or to be somewhat of a neutral/chaotic actor instead)
  • Yes! (more interesting to be restricted to evil)
  • Neutral (either way it’s fine)
  • No! (better to have more options for how to play it)

A story where you’re locked to being a heterosexual CIS male with only female romance options (instead of being able to choose the details of your own character and/or romance options) (clarification: mainly this idea is in order to create a possibly more coherent plot and characters, as I’ve never really written romance so far, so it’s challenging enough without adding all the extra variables  ) (and I don’t think there are many games with this idea yet, except I guess the Infinity series?) (in addition, I think there are some things you lose - such as gender-specific story elements? - when creating characters that don’t have a set gender and/or romantic options, although at the same time, less people may be interested if there’s no way to self-insert into that scenario…?)
  • Yes! (romance with a gender-locked male sounds interesting)
  • Neutral (either way it’s fine)
  • No! (not interested in this type of game)

A story where you’re controlling a nation and focusing on the management/strategy/diplomacy in a Total War / Civilization / etc. game type of situation, with the storytelling taking somewhat of a back seat to the gameplay (instead of having focus on the story and some not-as-impactful management decisions etc.)
  • Yes! (focusing on the management/strategy aspect over storytelling sounds interesting)
  • Neutral (either way it’s fine)
  • No! (prefer to read a story more than truly playing a game, with the gameplay elements being a bonus)

A story where you have several different genres of story/gameplay at different phases of progressing through the game (for example, like in the game Spore) (instead of a consistent theme and style of playing it throughout the whole game)
  • Yes! (sounds interesting to almost have several different types of games in one story)
  • Neutral (either way it’s fine)
  • No! (it feels better to have a consistent experience from start to end)

0 voters

A story where the environment/characters/events are mostly randomly/procedurally created, a bit like Minecraft for example, although it wouldn’t necessarily be a sandbox game (instead of manually crafting the story)
  • Yes! (sounds interesting to have infinite replayability and unpredictability)
  • Neutral (either way it’s fine)
  • No! (it feels better to have a manually crafted experience)

0 voters

A story where you play as an alien/monster with completely different physical/gender/societal/cultural concepts compared to humans (instead of just, well, playing as a human)
  • Yes! (sounds interesting to play something totally different)
  • Neutral (either way it’s fine)
  • No! (it’s probably more relatable/interesting to play as humans)

I picked Neutral for the first question, but it’s less neutral and more ā€œit depends.ā€ I’d just want it to be made very clear that I can’t choose to be good. I’ve played a few games where there are purportedly options to be a good person, but they’re just randomly thrown in there and have no impact on the story or your personality moving forward, or they’re intended to be (not-so-)obvious joke options, or the MC goes ā€œWait, why am I doing something good? I’m evil!ā€ I don’t want the option to be there if it’s not actually possible.

Thank you. :slightly_smiling_face:
