On a more serious note, I vote for the last one. I haven’t seen a game mixing supernatural fantasy with sci-fi and that sounds intriguing.

Also, you can create a poll to see which one people prefer. That will help you decide.

Welcome! I definitely feel where you’re coming from on a lot of the scary stuff getting started, but it sounds like you’ve got some pretty good ideas to start with.

Personally, I’d vote for 1 or 3, not sure between them. For 1, I think it sounds like it has some cool worldbuilding potential and unique spins. And like @moonfungus said, it’s hard to go wrong with cranky enchanted weapons.

3 sounds like it would have the same strengths, just in a setting I personally tend to be a harder sell on (though IIRC sci fi tends to be rarer than fantasy, at least around here, which could be a plus?). I also do like the ā€œIs it magic? Is it science? Are those even different?ā€ angle it could go for.

That said, 2 still sounds good, it just doesn’t have as strong of a hook (in the blurb at least) relative to the others, so it sounds more generic. Doesn’t mean I wouldn’t enjoy that story too, but I’d probably read the other two first.

Thanks, that’s a good idea!

And I’m glad people are as stoked about sentient weapons as I am haha!

@Jayffel Thanks for the feedback, I’m super keen to know what kind of genres or tropes people are more likely to read.

Huge Harry Pottter fan here so, obviously I gravitate more to choice 2. Because, you know… magical school haha. But choice 1 and 3 also sounds super intriguing. Honestly whichever you choose you can’t go wrong. I think they all have potential to be great! Sorry if my answer wasn’t very helpful. As you can see I can be a little indecisive lol

The urban fantasy one had me at Incubus, provided of course he’s an ro for gay guys.
Although if you can transpose the same sort of thing to the sci-fi one with mr. Incubus being a cute ā€œinfiltratorā€ instead I might go for that one as I do have a big soft spot for sci-fi.

Noted, I’m just not into yet another magic school game or series of games at the moment, but I do recognise those sorts of games are really popular. And, if I read the blurb correctly, yours will at least feature an mc perspective that isn’t often featured in these kinds of settings, with the mc presumably being a part of the rich well-connected elite, instead of a dirt poor urchin who is new to magic and the magical world.

I would still much prefer 3 and then 1 in that order.

Me too @literary_warrior! But I’ve also really enjoyed reading books and CoG/HG with academy settings, I think it’s a pretty neat way to quickly establish the boundaries of your world and build from there. I’m also interested in the way institutions or factions can drive character focused stories; if they’re all working together (or against each other in some cases) then it provides exciting oppertunities for characters to all bounce off of each other in a more enclosed environment. Also, cool haunted swamp!

@idonotlikeusernames - An Incubus is something I definitely don’t intend to let go of, whether they’re a kind school nurse, a geneticaly altered super spy, or a supernatural detective with a silver tongue
It’s also really important for me to have an abundance of choice for the protagonist and plenty of representation amongst the characters.

The urban one seems really interesting so far, also so do the ROs! So if they’re all gender flippable the incubus would become a succubus and a female Mordred?

I’m a big fan of Sc-fi and halloween but I feel like the Sci-fi one is more interesting. At least to me

@Artemis1 For the urban fantasy I was planning on having one character genderlocked for story purposes, and the others as gender flippable. Characters I’m toying with atm are:

  1. Mordred Le Fay, ultimate grumpy goth GF/BF and the spirit attached to the sword. Their dark eyes contain secrets and sadness.
  2. Byron/ Beatrix, kind and thoughtful incubus/ succubus who is partial to sweaters and messy updoes. Has a dark and hedonistic past. They’ve hurt people and their self-loathing is evident, they suppress their desires as well as they can. As you get closer, will they be able to resist you?
  3. Julian/ Juliet, a petite vampire who’s climbed their way up through the criminal underworld of the city, their tough and rebellious exterior hides the scars of their human past: a small child sold to a Victorian opium den. This delinquent ends up with a soft spot for you.
  4. Nasir/ Nasrin, a bold, caring, and loyal gentlemen/woman who happens to be a beefy werewolf. Enjoys being who they are and wants others to feel the same. Usually intervenes during arguments and will pick people up if needed.
  5. Arden Greene, lazy, perceptive, and reluctant mentor with a passion for ugly hawaiian shirts and cup noodles. A skilled magic user, he’s glib in most situations but would sacrifice himself for others in a heartbeat. He’s just here to have a good time and he’s seen it all before.
  6. Peter/ Petra, childhood friend and kind banshee who, following an accident, can’t use their voice without causing harm to others. They sign and enjoy their secret chats with the MC. They canonically have freckles and like fluffy jumpers and milkshakes.

Of course these are just a start, and I’m excited about how the different settings would really shake things up or have entirely different characters altogether.

Honestly it’s okay since it’s just one and the most interesting ROs like the vampire, childhood friend, incubus/succubus and Mordred are gender flippable.

Hello CoG forums. I’m a long-time lurker, first-time poster. Would anyone be interested in a kind of urban fantasy game with a sci-fi twist?

My game, working title The Future Far Behind Us, is set in the small country of Arvendon, on the Tysreian Peninsula. You play as a tired grad student working towards your Masters degree in Medieval History, with a focus on the Mortis Day Rebellion, a powerful but ultimately unsuccessful uprising that nonetheless paved the way for the People’s War for Independence three years later. As part of your research, you were able to book some time in the Etiology department’s Archival Observer Machine, an intricate piece of equipment that allows you to project your consciousness back in time and watch historical events as they happen. However, just as you’re settling in to your session, a student protest outside the building draws your professorial monitor out of the room. With only your knowledge of the time and the rebellious Technomage Major at the controls, you’re free to interact with the past as you see fit… perhaps even changing the course of history!

  • Choose your gender and sexuality.

  • Warn the royals, aid the rebellion, or sit idly by as the original tragedy comes to pass.

  • Choose from several romances, including the King’s Heir, the leader of the rebellion, or your guy in the chair back in the present.

  • Figure out how to exert your influence on the time you find yourself in: will you whisper in people’s ears, influence their emotions, or develop telekinesis? Be careful-the more you interact with the past, the harder it will be to return to your body in the present.

If you’ve read this far, then thanks for your time!

Sounds promising to me. I like the idea of a time travel story where there’s a person in the present communicating with the time traveler in the past. I don’t think I’ve seen anything like before, at least of the top of my head, and it could make for a cool dynamic.

Hi everybody!

This is my first post here, so please be patient
I’d like to create an adventure inspired by the Monkey Island videogame franchise and the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. I’d call it Back to Monkey Island or Return to Isla de Monos (the title is WIP). In it, you play as Gaya Brushwood (granddaughter of the once famous pirate Guy Brushwood). Gaya was struck by a very nasty curse that ruined her life the very day of her wedding. The cursed girl unwillingly becomes the captain of a weird crew: an ever-aging Voodoo witch, a very intelligent Gorilla, a zombie Rockstar and a funny-voiced spokesman. Every single one of them is cursed: together they will discover the truth about their curse and eventually face the (in)famous Pirate LeChic.
Tons of fun, jokes and curses await you in the Cursed Caribbean in this silly adventure. Would you be interested in playing such an adventure? Did anyone already do something similar?
I was thinking about using these Stats:
Charm vs Brawns, Wit vs Dread, Voodoo Power and Reputation.

Key Features:
Fun, jokes and a happy atmosphere
Battle against pirates using taunts/comebacks instead of swords
Funny puzzles and tons of easter eggs

I hope you like the idea. Any help/suggestion or hint is welcome.

Hi everybody!

This is my first post here on the forums but I’ve been a fan of COG/Hosted Games for a while now! I have some writing and coding experience and have written some small hypertext / Twine based games for school projects before. I’ve never worked with Choicescript before, but I’m excited to learn it !

The game I’m interested in writing is focused on the Greek myth of Pygmalion and Galatea, more specifically the 1870’s play retelling ā€œPygmalion and Galateaā€ by William Schwenck Gilbert. I’d like to expand and rework the story (giving it my own treatment and style), give more agency to Galatea / the MC and the other female characters, and add romance options of course

I’m aware of the IF parser game ā€˜Galatea’ by Emily Short, but I think my concept is different and separated enough that it can be its own distinct game.

I’m still thinking of a working title, suggestions appreciated!

Features and Info under the cut!

Summary
  • You play as Galatea, a marble statue of a woman brought to life by Aphrodite. (I’m open to the idea of a male ((Galaton, maybe??) or non binary ((Galatt? / Galatine?)) mc as well, still considering the story) You can choose your sexualtiy and appearance.

  • Choices alter the story as well as the MC’s actions, and influence the ending of the game! Will you find true love, discover life as a human, or end up returning to a statue?

  • Romance five central characters, male and female, possibly one gender variable/nb. I am also considering a poly option between the MC, Pygmalion and Cynisca. Romance choice affects how the story plays out, and impacts endings for the other characters.

    • Pygmalion - A talented sculptor, MC’s ā€˜creator’
    • Cynisca - Pygmalion’s wife and former priestess of Artemis.
    • Chrysos - A wealthy patron of the arts (gender variable, maybe)
    • Myrine - Pygmalion’s crafty and headstrong sister
    • Leucippus - A charming, but awkward soldier
  • Determine the MC’s feelings on life, death, love, art, and beauty as they experience what being human is all about, both positives and negatives.

Please drop a like, reply or message if you seem interested! Suggestions and feedback welcome! Thanks so much!

Hi Emma!

I like the concept. I love Greek Myths and my name is Gilbert :stuck_out_tongue:

I’d suggest ā€œHeart of Stoneā€ as a possible title. How do you like it?

For a moment, I thought that this would be a retelling of George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion. But, that being said, the original myth is also fine. I’m interested to see where you take this, seeing as how there’s not a lot of potential for branching solely from the original myth (I’m not familiar with the play). I suggest the title ā€œAphrodite’s Gift.ā€

Well I got it down to the sci-fi and urban fantasy one. Do I know which I prefer? No. There are warring factions in my brain trying to figure out which one I like best and they are at a stalemate. Whatever you choose, I’m sure it will be great!

@Logan_T Thanks! It looks like urban fantasy is winning out at the moment but people seem pretty attached to both. Perhaps I can do an urban fantasy with a bit of a cyberpunk twist… :sparkles:

That would be interesting to see. Perhaps we were once an ordinary person who got selected to become a genetically altered person (either against our will or willingly maybe based on the players choice) and end up with a rag tag team of supernatual investigators after being saved by a group of smugglers. Or some other way to combine them together. Anyway you do it. I’m sure it will be a really interesting game to play

Hi all!

Also a lurker / first-time poster with a love for CoG/HGs, and wanted to throw out the idea of a game I’ve been writing!

Working Title between ā€œWithout Namesā€, ā€œThread of Namesā€ (was also considering ā€œNamelessā€ but I think there is a game called this already on dashingdon?). Would gladly take any suggestions haha.

The story is fantasy, in a world where the mortal population (mortalis) now mostly live in separate ā€œoasis citiesā€, since the land between each one has slowly become barren. You, however, act as a member of one of the four sheevra clans (basically fey / based on stories about fey). Since you’ve gained consciousness, you’ve known the mortalis are responsible for creating the deserts between the cities, draining the world of its magic, and that it’s up to you to take that energy back so the sheevra can slowly restore the world’s more verdant state.

You’ve been taught to do this by locking them into deals, taking their memories, or ideally, finding out a mortalis’ name. But it doesn’t always come easy. Most mortalis are paranoid about the existence of your people, and as such, the world has become a place where most go by their profession, or else choose a fake name to live their life under. Knowing someone’s actual name is usually the most intimate secret a person can offer.

The game starts when you’re sent to another city after an entire sheevra clan disappears seemingly overnight, and you have to find out what happened before it comes for you.

I’ve always loved character development, relationships, and romance entrenched in a story, so there is a focus on those. Hoping to put out a demo in the next month or two, but would love an interest check and any feedback on generic story/mechanics. More details below!

Player Details

The player chooses name, gender, sexuality, and appearance variables, as well as one of the following sheevra races (so far):

  • Dryad [Bonus to Elemental Magic]
  • Unseelie [Bonus to Illusion Magic]
  • Leanhaun [Bonus to Pathos Magic]

More on Magic in Stats.

Stats

The MC’s stats are split into Personality, Mortalis Interactions, Magic & Might, and Relationships
As of now, I’ve been coding:
Personality:
Honest vs Deceptive
Persuasive vs Intimidating
Sarcastic vs Serious
Open vs Evasive (open vs closed-off maybe? Might be too close to honest vs deceptive)

Mortalis Interactions
These dictate how you interact with the mortalis, whether you change your view on them, etc:
Empathetic vs Callous
Curious vs Apprehensive

Magic & Might
There is a scale of preference towards using magic vs using physical strength.
Might is broken down into Strength and Agility
Magic is broken down into three schools: Elemental, Illusion, and Pathos.

Elemental: The chaos of nature is intuitive to you, and you are proficient in magic utilizing the elements.
Illusion: Deception is the game you play, and conjuring hallucinations and apparitions is what you’re best at
Pathos: An opponent’s emotions are your best weapon, and you excel at manipulation.

Relationships
One page for information on the ROs you interact with and quick information on them. Their names change depending on your relationship and the more you find out.

The other page is for your relationship with your Clan and the other three sheevra clans depending on your decisions.

The Sentiments

These are vials of memories you’ve collected with different effects depending on who ingests them. Game-mechanic wise, they can be used as an instant-success, or else to throw a little chaos into a situation. Still deciding if there is a way for you to restore these, or if they are a one-and-done deal.

The player starts out with one of each, and they come in pairs, totaling six:
Delight, Despair | Devotion, Repulsion | Fury, Fright

ROs

There are four ROs (I say ROs for ease, but also definitely plan on a no-romance route ), all gender swappable depending on player choice, listed in meeting order:

"The Healer"
One of the first people you meet on arriving at the new city, they point you to what eventually becomes your home base, and are known as being a friendly and open person.

"The Magesmith"
An artificer of sorts with a brass left forearm. Generally very closed off and snarky.

"The Sage"
A scholar at the city’s Archival Library, and a firm believer in the sheevra, despite close ties with the mortalis government.

"Oisein"
Another sheevra from your clan who comes to help investigate, extremely sarcastic and keeps their emotions bottled up. You can choose your past with them, whether you are barely friends, close friends, or thought there might be something more?

Thank you so much for any feedback and I hope to share more in the future!
