A little help with Choicescript please?

#1

As you can probably tell, I am “new” to Choicescript. I am a young, aspiring author, and I am looking for a way to polish and round my skills. Not only that, but I think that making a game on Choicescript would be exciting and full of new experiences for me to learn.

Unfortunately, there is this one problem.

I have already downloaded the file off of “github” or whatever it’s called. I put the file on my desktop, and then zipped the file.

I was wondering if some kind soul could help me through this, because I am utterly clueless.^^"

Sincerely,

Angie

@Silhuetta

Welcome to the forums.

Check this topic out for some useful links…

It has links to tutorials and the choicescript development wiki which is very useful.

#3

Alright. Thanks! ^^

@Silhuetta

If there is anything you can’t understand just post your questions in the forum and one of us will help you :slight_smile:

#5

I looked through the links already. While they tell me what to download, they don’t tell me what to do to start the game.

I’m trying to find one where it said to download the Notepad++, but I can’t remember where I saw it.

#6

@Silhuetta

http://notepad-plus-plus.org/

you can get notepad++ from there.

#7

Okay, I got it. Now what?

xp Sorry, I’m not exactly fluent in this type of thing.

#8

@Silhuetta

Do you have Dropbox? if not I recommend downloading it as it’s what most of us use to host the demos of our games.

#9

So you use Notepad++ to write the games, and Dropbox to host them?

#10

Alright. I downloaded that.

What’s the next step?

#11

yes notepad++ lets you write the game, dropbox will let you host it so people can play it.

You need to enable the public folder in dropbox. let me just find the link. Give me a minute

edit:

okay once you’ve registered with Dropbox click this link

that should enable the public folder. Once you’ve done that you should be able to open dropbox on your computer. Then you should move the choicescript folder to the public folder in dropbox.

Once you’ve done that you can access the files on any computer with an internet connection.

#12

Okay. I’ll go fiddle with it for a little bit to see if I can make it work.

Alright. I enabled the public folder, and put the zipped Choicescript folder into the dropbox.

#13

okay. I’ve heading offline now, but when your public folder is enable if you open dropbox via your browser it should look like this…

#14

Mmrkay. Thanks for your help, I’ll just have to see if I can find my own way.

Thanks a lot for helping me! ^^

#15

Hopefully someone else will be able to continue the help, if not I’ll try and leave some more steps for you tomorrow. You can check the earlier links for additional help.

I found @CS_Closet’s tutorial extremely valuable when I first started trying to figure out choicescript. I think it’s a little outdated now, since you don’t need to access the mygame.js file anymore you can just do things from startup.txt. Otherwise it may still be useful.

The wiki’s also useful. http://choicescriptdev.wikia.com

#17

Thank you guys for all the help, I’ll go check it out and see what I can do with it. :slight_smile:

#18

I’m trying to get to startup.txt. but for some reason it sends me to Microsoft Word so…I can’t really do anything. Any suggestions?

#19

I’m making my first line- eek! [ so excited! ]

I’m a little confused on where it says to “make a scene” on Countersong’s closet. Any help please?
