Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven -- set for release 10/28/16

@Lithophene Remy is a great character. I like how you and others are providing key experiences in the game so far. Maybe I should have the game track it all and add that to the stat screen.

@Bruno_Frank_Hill Interesting serial killer. Wow can Depraved reach that high?! :slightly_smiling:

Do you feel your RL character matches you?

@StarshinaSokolov Paul would make an interesting bandit leader down the road. Hmmm…

Mark intrigues me as the lecherous elite fighter. He’d do well in the first ZE, though he’d have a love-hate relationship with Heather until he dumps her for Mindy.

@Oirbse nice, a mad scientist. I will be adding more for scientists and hackers. I just need to work on them.

@Jenna_V your comments are well taken and I want to make the non-combatant excel as easily (or at least reasonably) as an elite soldier. Changes I plan to make point to the brainier characters. One thing not in the game yet are opportunities to add survivors to your group. People who lack survival or combat skills will do better in larger groups. So hang on for more NPCs and more non-combat options.

Also (relating to your conversation with @Oirbse), the game does allow major use of Pesuasion/Intimidation/Leadership. It’s subtle though. Unlike ranged or hand-to-hand where you can see the effect (a dead zombie), the manipulation skills have less showy results.

@Obsidian great back story, and I enjoy how you weaved in Ari’s history in Nightfall.

I will add it.

@Fiogan I am glad someone made a character who is artistic. I worry sometimes that no one will play those types of characters.

I tried and coding it was a level past nightmare.

@Zolataya I agree with your points on skill increases, and your feedback contributed to my changing the system. I also need to add more for underused skills, but that’s not reflective of neglect but lack of time.

@NJG no, since the alternate prologue is the date which won’t work for teens.

I haven’t even talked to Dante yet and the game is acting as if I know his name. I chose to shoot the zombies from the safety of my home with a compound bow

In the expensive ranchers house. Using a compound bow so it should silently kill the zombie.

@EmperorHeartless

good catch. I’ll add it.

I have been coding WAAAAAAAYYYYYYY too much :slightly_smiling:

@Bugreporter that’s the first teen profile, I think. Thanks for posting it.

It depends on the level. For level 0, it may be a field trip to identify flora and fauna. Level 4 may require a trip to the deep woods to live off the land.

Boone is just an example NPC.

For skills 0 and 1, it may be hours. For mastering it may be over days or weeks, when the gap between chapters lengthens. Right now, the game is day-by-day but eventually chapters will be weeks apart.

I just meant characters receive points for reaching the end of a chapter.

About 400,000 (I’m coming for you Tin Star!)

@poison_mara I don’t think farming survivors is likely. Survivors drain resources, can cause additional problems, can steal, etc. They are not vendors but people who will affect everything. I can still see a reason for players to pass on Jillian & Lyle. Also, on the first play, you won’t know what other survivors can contribute. If you don’t want to learn survival, Boone is not as attractive.

@StarshinaSokolov

That’s on my To Do list. I am already writing the pet training section.

As a youth Jun Reyes never found any real motivation to aspire to great achievements or advance far in life, however he had a natural talent to learn and adapt becoming more or less an all rounder in any skills he learned. Despite his skill at learning and adapting he never excelled in anything due to spreading his time out learning many different skills. When he was a teen he was robbed and his house broken into as well and due to those experiences he decided to learn how to defend himself and learned hand-to-hand combat and later on in life how to operate and use ranged weaponry, mostly guns and archery. He was never the most sociable person and was AWFUL at reading other people’s emotions. He absolutely hates the idea of violence and intimidating people to get his way, but in the new world he understands that when it comes down to it that it’s him or them. Has a good understanding of many pre-apocalypse skills, but stayed away from Science and even more so medicine in small part due to rebellion against his family that was constantly pushing him to aspirations he didn’t want one of which that they pushed the most was a Doctor or Pharmacist.
Despite being terrible at social events he has proven very capable at leading (by example at least) and showing proficiency in getting any task done. When given the chance he actually can be very charismatic, but due to his upbringing with his very controlling parents (purposeful or not) he has low will of his own thus making him more quiet and less likely to speak his own suggestions or voice his problems unless it affects his survival. Since he spent most is his life simply dealing with problems on his own he is more of a man of action and learning than social talking.
Despite successes wherever he applied himself he still found himself unsure of what to do for his future despite being a business major in college (this is why I dubbed the profession as ā€œLost Soulā€)
He will undoubtly help others, but if he feels that he is being used he will walk away and very rarely confront them. With the apocalypse he has decided to focus on more skills to help with survival realizing the old world is gone and the ones he improved were stealth so that he would stop getting detected by every zombie within a 5 mile radius, persuasion to help desk with other survivors and Athletics so he can run away easier if things go AWOL

Notable events:
Saved Dante by shooting the zombies with his compound bow
Asked Kelly for proof, and tried to handle and tried to speak civilly only to be run off by a couple of rifle shots
Spent a large amount of time securing his home and then the rest scavenging for items.

Kevin was always very smart and lonely. In school he was a straight-A student, and people barely noticed he was in the classroom at all, as he didn’t open his mouth to talk to anybody. People always thought he was shy, but he secretly couldn’t stand people. Wherever he’s simply annoyed because he’s always surrounded by people who aren’t even half as smart as him or if he got the human race all figured out and didn’t like it, is up for debate.

Kevin became a millionaire after he sold a smartphone app he made as a teen to a large social network site. He waited until he was old enough to move out of his parent’s house, brought a nice house in the suburbs, and lives a minimalist lifestyle, only spending the money his bank generates as interest, so his fortune is always growing on its own.

Since he lives alone, Kevin had to learn how to drive himself around town, as well as cook his own food. Kevin has a treadmill that he uses from time to time, and tries to follow some workout routines he sees on the internet. He isn’t anywhere near a six-pack, but at least can handle some physical activity. He spends a lot of time on his computer, mostly reading about the news in the scientific community. He knows everything about medicine. In theory, of course. He’s kinda used on keeping a low profile and sneaking around to avoid dealing with people, and knows enough about how humans work to spot from a mile away what other peoples’ intentions are. He also notices when things are out of place.

Since he strongly dislikes people and isn’t even sure he cares about what happens to himself, Kevin will often avoid other people, no matter if they need help or not. He’ll also ignore what happens around him,
unless it puts him in immediate risk (and sometimes even then). Kevin simply doesn’t care. About anything. At all.

Gameplay: dispose, lock, cut, no interest, resell, lottery, walk by, no coupon, keep shopping, decline, meal (large), rest, online, no way to break in, hammer, outside, glad, bathtub, TV, sleep, supplies, safer area, typical breakfast, ready, repair, TV, don’t care, nothing to do with me, board home, don’t care, check gear, craft a Molotov, error (CraftItem line 268: non-existent variable ā€œno_more_craftingā€). I got the error fairly late in the game, so I didn’t play again to bypass it.

@JimD lol no I’m no psycho glad people like that character though, my other one I did is pretty accurate, but accurate as of now, my playing style wont change so it’ll get less accurate as time goes on obvs as the ingame events wont affect me but do enjoy playing with delusions as do kinda have a mental disorder, but not treatable with meds like delusions, but not as harmful either, so if this happened in real life, my mental state would definatley get worse than it already is, especially as obvs in the z world therapy wouldn’t be a thing I’m guessing, which in real life helps dramatically :).

Another one of my friends. Changed her name (slightly), but the story is pretty much unchanged, aside from a few minor details to make her fit into the game. I’m really sorry. I’d never even want to think about her dealing with the apocalypse alone, much less actually play it as a game…But I just had to know how she’d handle it =P

Mei, the daughter of Chinese immigrants, was always very smart and shy. In school she was a straight-A student, and had rather few friends, given her shyness, although she was very close to them. She got accepted in a very reputable university, where she majored effortlessly in Microbiology, and then began focusing on Virology.

She’s very short, skinny, and frail, which doesn’t help her much in regard to physical activities. However, her fragile look makes her very cute and cuddly, which not only activates most peoples’ protective instincts, but also makes them have a hard time turning down her requests. Her scientific profession gives her quite some analytical skills, as well as some knowledge in medicine.

Mei is a very kind and caring girl, and always does her best to help people. She’ll face a big moral dilemma about killing others, even if in self-defense, and even if they’re zombies. She’ll more likely than not go out of her way to help people.

Gameplay: Call, listen, help, virology, do nothing, notify, collect, first-aid, call Jaime, not prepared, call Parker, bathtub, board up, he’ll wander away, pepper spray, basement, upset, call Fred, tell the truth, shelter is great, hang up without asking for supplies, Fred’s mom, meet Fred for supplies, meal (small), repair, online, research, meet up with Jaime, two units of food, simple, worried, Fred’s house, reinforce, chili-craft, deal with zombie, trick, rush, stop bleeding, discuss, bring up suspicions (ā€œWith all due respect, sirā€?), repair, noise, offer to examine, TV, scout, three-storey home, knock, find a way, run, change into street clothes, check gear.

@JimD - I am happy to contribute and I am excited to see the new system in place and experience it in action. Get ready to hear my next critique:

  1. Be careful of feature creep. With the further development of the system, it sounds like you are reaching the limits of the scripting engine. I have not yet used it but from what you say above: any further development is going to be giving you fewer and fewer returns on your investment of development time.

  2. I understand the lack of time to accomplish your goals - concentrate on doing what you can, then once you complete your preliminary goals you can review what you are able and capable of doing to expand the non-combat skills part of the story.

If I ever give off the vibe that I think your neglecting anything, be assured that is far from what I really think. A project of this nature is one that you invest a lot in. If anything, sometimes a step back is needed to regain perspective.

Haha The Appeal of Mad SCIENCE is too great it seems.
Anyway here’s a little interlude I was going to post a little while back.

You feel like something’s crawling up your spine, as you realise that the air of your Coupe is stifling, and stale.

ā€œGood ahaā€ He clicks his tongue before continuing " Morning? Or was it After Noon, you can never really tell".
You blink a few times to make sure that the smiling man before you is real.

Eyes searching the seems, looking for the disgusting tint of yellow and green that has always spelled death…Or simply for a sign that this is just that ceaseless stalker.

Instead all you see is a flash of white as they move to your side, a pink and red lab coat smelling of ozone and copper coming in to sharp view.

He sees you searching and flashes a wide, toothy smile.
As blue clinical eyes look down on you.

"Oho, but where are my manners " He laughs after a tense couple of seconds, before checking his pockets.
Oblivious to your confusion, as he smiles down at you, white coat moving with an invisible…And absent wind.

ā€œI’m…Ummm let’s see, was I the smart one…Or the lucky one, oh and did my name start with a M, Mobius, Michael, Miles…No, that’s not itā€ He exclaims excitedly, smile only seeming to widen.
And you can almost swear you hear him say it’s this place that does it too you, but a lukewarm gust silences that thought.

ā€œIt’s Henry, like that less than noble harry…But not unlike that murderous Crow person in my opinion, and well I trust my opinion…Sometimes?ā€ He smiles, before extending a amputated arm to shake hands with.
The skin an odd pigment, grey with dark red marks running down it.

ā€œPeople say I shake hands like a fish, but I disagree, cause fish have fins and well I have ā€˜hands’, Oho I can give you one if you want?ā€ He says, waving the arm around.

And you fight the erg to winch, a growing fear of possible infection welling up in your being.
But you fight to keep it down, he’s a doctor or something not crazy…Please don’t be crazy.
You repeat to your self like a pray, a mad mantra to keep back that little voice at the back of your head that grows stronger and stronger.

ā€œOr are you here to see the wondrous Laplace, truthfully I was not expecting my first fans to be arriving yet, but why of course you can most certainly have my autograph, though could I interest you in some water tooā€ He fire away, only to be answered by a long and uninterrupted silence, as a pair of eye’s turn to view the bodies strapped to tables, injuries caused by what lies beyond the door marring their flesh.

" I’m afraid I don’t have great bedside manners" Henry will supply unhelpfully, wearing that now ever present smile, and perhaps you think, It would be simply best to note when it leaves his face, rather than when he has it on.

ā€œButā€ He says waiting until he has your full attention. ā€œI will find a cure, after all it does little good to take over the world if everyone one in it is boring…And I guess deadā€ He seems to add as an after thought.

ā€œThat’s why we’re talking…I’m sorry you are infectedā€ He finishes with the closes thing you’ve seen to a frown from him.
It’s then that a stray thought enters your mind, You been bitten, but you neither feel any pain nor any symptoms.
You try to raise an arm up in protest, to will your voice to give life to the doubts you feel, you know are not true.

And just as quickly you see a green and yellow rash on the edges of your arm, and everything seems to fade into black as they, it, him raises a needle of some kind.

Okay I decided to give Mallory a backstory since I like role-playing too.

Mallory has lived in the city of Nightfall all of her life. She passed her exams with straight A’s and one of her teachers commented she is destined a great future.

Two years after graduating, Mallory became a head programmer for a IT company and excelled in her work. When Mallory is not working, she spends her time cracking any information about the government, believing that have hidden many secrets over the years from America, ranging from alien encounters to people being replaced by androids. When she’s bored and not feeling up to digging, she hacks into databases and plants bogus info or bait as pranks to entertain herself, fueled by the thrill of being caught. She has worked alongside LEGIT at some point but refuses to join them.

She met Julianne through work, most of their interactions were over video calls since Julianne worked for another branch but usually called Mallory for a tech problem because as Julianne put it, ā€˜her eggheads are fairly useless.’ Their interactions became more than friendly and when Julianne had to make a business trip to Mallory’s branch, she jumped at the chance to meet her. After the wine and FBI prank, Julianne and Mallory dated for three months. Mallory kept her conspiracy theories to herself, not wanting Julianne thinking she was a weirdo, but shared her hacking skills with her and teached her a few things. The relationship came to an end when Julianne said she had to move back to her branch. Mallory, upset and angry she was leaving, swallowed her true feelings and broke it off under the impression that she doesn’t like long distance. They remained very close friends but Mallory’s feelings never died.

Mallory was never a people person, always kept quiet at school and finds it difficult making friends at her workplace. In her words: ā€œI suck at leadership. I’d just sit there with no balls to speak up.ā€ Therefore, any social skills are below average. She took a fascination in doomsday prepping and survivalists, learning to survive and scavenging outdoors, creating barricades and creating water sources easily. She also grew the unusual hobby of close range defence, she once stole a fire ax from her workplace as a dare from Julianne and started swinging it around in her backyard out of boredom, eventually she got a good feel for its weight. Mallory is a heavy smoker, cracking and programming puts a lot of stress on her and cigarettes became her sweet release. She has a huge fear of heights ever since she was a little girl, she could never overcome it and winces at the thought of climbing flights after flights or stairs.

Although she is quiet and awkward in almost every social encounter, Mallory is not one to turn down an opportunity to help people.

In appearance she has an alternative look about her. Hair passes her shoulders a few inches and is dyed a dark blue much to her company’s disagreement, she wears ear plugs and has a lotus tattoo on her forearm. Mallory likes wearing jeans, knee high boots and a hooded jacket, she is very tomboyish in her looks and always wear a slouch beanie. She wouldn’t be caught dead in a dress. She is thin but not bony and stands at a height of 5’4, she finds it easy to fit into tight spaces.

In the apocalypse, Mallory’s attitude changed. She became paranoid that the zombies are the governments doing and works relentlessly to discover the truth. She distrusts strangers and sometimes people she knows, seeing people as unpredictable in the apocalypse and potentially dangerous, but she can’t help herself when she sees somebody in danger but once she knows they’re safe, she abandons them. She has no problem killing zombies, believing that they are no longer people. She is terrified of aggressive survivors and will attack in self-defence. She is driven to reunite with Julianne, believing that she will survive long enough to reach her location and take her back to her home, the thought of Julianne dying will be the end of her.

Chris is your typical no-nonsense police officer. You break the law, he breaks you. Simple as that. Of course he’ll try to avoid actually using physical violence, but he’ll make you wish you had some spare underwear with you if you do as much as jaywalk.

Chris was raised in a tough neighborhood, and became the man of the family when his father, a police officer, was killed in a shoot-out with gangsters. Determined to put criminals in their place, Chris became a cop himself, and has been cleaning the streets since then.

Being quite tall with a deep voice, a serious face, and a sharp tongue, Chris can instill fear into even the worst of the criminals. People who know him often don’t need to be told twice before they comply. Being used to playing the bad-cop part in interrogations, Chris memorized some of the things people do when they’re lying, although he can confuse stress with untruthfulness.

Few officers can match his ratings at the range, and a lot of outlaws were repeatedly introduced to his nightstick. Chris rarely gets left behind while chasing criminals on foot, and does a good job pursuing them in his patrol car. He’s no stranger to his gadgets, and has some basic medical training. Chris can spot some out-of-place things, and would probably be okay in survival situations, although he could do better.

Chris believes in justice, and will do whatever he thinks is right, as long as it’s (at least partially) in accordance to the law. He’ll do his best to help good people, although he’ll actively seek to put an end to outlaws, even if there aren’t really any official laws to be followed. With Chris, being good doesn’t equals being soft…Or nice, for that matter.

Gameplay: Examine, dispose, check, listen, help, break argument, taser, follow, shoot, station, last of concerns, gear, call Jaime, doing well, call Vince, bathtub, board up, machete, Remington, canteen-tent-bag, meal (normal), have to kill (Remington and Glock), anxious, call Sean, agree, pain (sincere), rest, TV, online, meet up with Jaime, secure, two units, skip, simple, motivated, call Sean, Sean’s house, kill, find Sean, food-cigarettes-cigarettes-painkillers, rush, stop bleeding, discuss, kill White, scout, rush, Remington, introduce, three-story house, climb, examine, answer, real identity, break the news, green-lime door, food-food-gasoline-tarp, first floor, second floor, kill, cover, antibiotics-bandages-soap-shampoo, rancher, kill, Remington best weapon, died the way they wanted, approach to stop violence, government should deal with it, repair, TV.

When reporting a bug is it helpful to also screenshot the character profile. Does it make finding that bug easier?

Thanks @EmperorHeartless, @StarshinaSokolov, @Oirbse and @Bruno_Frank_Hill for the characters and profiles. I enjoy seeing how people put their characters together, and they show me where I may be lacking in providing content to help those characters be the heroes of their stories.

@Zolataya

I lack willpower on this one. As a long-time DM and RPG Storyteller, I often want to give freedom to my players. When players suggest new features, it’s tough to turn down good ideas. It’s good to be reminded to cut things off.

With the skill system, I had it planned long ago and don’t have many more big ticket items coming aside from story.

You haven’t given off that vibe yet. I appreciate your feedback.

@Obsidian the name of the chapter along with the text and description of the error is best. Screenshots make things more difficult.

Found this when I played as a Circus Performer.

Chapter: 2
Date: Saturday, May 12, 2012
Outbreak Day: 1

ā€œReady… SHOVE,ā€ you yell, and your nephew heaves forward, as you throw your body into the entertainment center. One more shove, and it slides into place, and you reward Kyle with a high five.

With the infected killed, you can search the house in peace.

I did not kill the zombies Me and my nephew just barricaded the door so they won’t get in. This was when I tried to find out what happened to Fred

So… are the only possible interactions with those soldiers who come by your house to either have a really suspicious conversation with them they leave in the middle of or to kill them? I suppose it’s meant to set up something for later, just feels kind of awkward to me I guess. Hm… this isn’t the most constructive criticism is it…

What could you expect the first day in the apocalypse? A tea party? They clearly did something wrong and Lopez tried to denounce them. For me they probably stole military equipment and stopped doing whatever they where ordered to just raid supplies for themselves. They are in the beginning of becoming psychotic raiders . In my playthrough Cowboy just died before that . But maybe a positive attitude character try to them go check his house?

@JimD
I found this bug in chapter 2 after I returned from the three story home. I had a dependent child.
ā€œYou check the time— 0:30pm.ā€
When I selected ā€œClean the water that Johnny collected on the roof.ā€
It displayed the time ā€˜1pm’.
I found this spelling error in the hacker profession, when I met Julianne.
I chose ā€œI worry about myself and look for a way out.ā€ And ā€œI leave through the back.ā€
ā€œMostly, you hear your fast-paced panting and your own heartbeat thudding loudly in your head. .ā€
Delete the second full stop.

I found this spelling mistake in chapter 2, with the event with the injured soldier.
I chose:
ā€œRush outside and help the soldier.ā€ And ā€œExamine the wound to see if he’s infected.ā€

It just so happens I have medical training."
Add a double quote before ā€˜It’.

I found something that I think is weird and worth to include in the game’s customitation. I tried to made a Toxicologist but game doesn’t let me choose the scientific background for him there is not option for it. And I want that because the attributes I want aren’t the ones you have for that background but The story I need is the science one, because a toxicologist fits in like a glove.

Another friend. Probably the last one I’ll post. I’ll continue posting profiles if you want to, but they’ll be made-up ones.

Alice is a hot-blooded self-defense enthusiast who’s not afraid to speak her mind. She does her firefighting job better than a lot of men, and will remind you of it every single time the subject comes up. If it doesn’t come up on its own, she’ll be more than happy to bring it up for you. With a rifle in one hand and your neck in the other, she’ll be quick to point it out that women don’t need to be the weak gender if they don’t want to.

Given her profession and love for self-defense, Alice is in a very good physical shape, and also a vegetarian, since the food tends to be healthier healthier. She takes Krav Maga classes, so she’s good at both armed and unarmed fighting. Alice also loves to go to the shooting range, and knows the basics about survival, including medicine. Her tomboyish looks and hot-bloodness can scare some people off, and she tends to know when people are bullshiting her. Alice enjoys driving, and is quite skilled in manual labor such as crafting.

Alice loves to help people and jump straight into the action, so not many survivors will stay in need if she’s around. Despite her hot-blooded personality and tendency to get upset rather easily, it’ll take a lot before she kills fellow survivors. It just isn’t right. Zombies are fair game, though.

@JimD
I found this spelling mistake in chapter 2 with a dependent child.
I chose to ā€œRush outside and kill the infected.ā€

Delete the ā€˜and’.
