Yay was looking forward to this game since I live near New Haven
I didn’t like this game. The premise is interesting and the writing is good but it all feels so… forced? I don’t know if that’s the right word, but that’s the only one I can find. I’m going to go over it really quick:
-the story is nice at the beginning, but ends up being too long. The final battle lasts more than it should.
-railroading. To elaborate: pacifism doesn’t net anything. You end up fighting no matter what.
-it’s confusing. I was very enthusiastic when Elan was revealed to be Williams but then it dissolves in a bunch of tropes that don’t really go well together.
-the character are too one dimensional. Ahote wants to be peaceful, Harken wants war, Lapu is a coward.
-plothole: the government was able to detect Werewolves years ago (at least two decades considering the MC’s age). How did they not think about werewolves infiltrating them? Even if the detectors can’t do their jobs you’d think they would ask for blood samples.
VERDICT : 12/20.
Good writing, good ideas that end up being very confusing. Most players won’t play a second time (necessary to get some important informations) which makes many things confusing in a bad way.
Dunno, i really liked it and already have done three playthru’s. Aaand counting for more. And with every play i was learning something new which was making me gawk even more. So i wouldn’t say ‘most players’?
I mean yeah it has heavy plot, which for me was something fresh, but i think putting it like ‘most’ would be a lie, since i sincerely believe that most did do second replay, cause come on! Every romance has it’s own path and story to accompany the main story! And almost every choice has something new to give you!
I haven’t even unlocked half of the achievements !
the game is great and my god, do I love werewolves of any kind, but some things felt very forced on me, Like, in my first playthrough I didn’t want to be a leader. I informed Ahote about my decision… And it worked! He was disappointed in me, but said he understands my choice and so on. I thought that it was excellent, now I can manipulate everything, being on the sidelines! As a result, I still found myself in the position of leader.
Betrayal of Lapu was too predictable. We were notified in the preview that there will be a traitor in the game, but I thought he was too obvious a choice. I thought that I would be betrayed by Dena- the way she was in love with me seemed to me too suspicious and unreal. However, everything turned out to be simpler and Lapu really became a traitor.
There was no option to be on the side with humans. Or maybe I didn’t get one?.. Torture is, of course, an awful thing, but why not betray your own and not go over to the side of the winners? Maybe I do not care about my “pack”. Why not?
And a cliche. Oh, how many cliches. Hot librarian was too striking to me, because I had not seen this cliche for so long, and here it is, back from a long past.
buuut maybe I would rate the game at 6/10. for the werewolves! and writing. it was really good!
I feel like that would be oversimplifying them, because even an extremely well-written character in any story when stripped completely can be reduced to one particular trait.
Spoilers ahead:
Ahote does want peace, which is unsurprising considering he is an elder and has been through the horrors of the Purge, but as the story progresses we can see him starting to relent a little to the idea of a fight. Haken wants war, but that’s not all he is; if the MC chooses to remain peaceful yet manages to inspire the pack before the final battle Haken actually thanks him, which shows that he respects such qualities even though he has zero leadership skills himself.
I also wouldn’t call Lapu a coward, rather, someone who is extremely immature, insecure, and makes horrible decisions; because he was brave enough to step up and stop Tiva from shooting the military guy who beat her up if the MC didn’t.
That’s just how I personally feel about the characters.
Summary
Lapu was going to leave her to beaten up severely by the humans. He’s most definitely a coward. He only does that if you force or convince him to come. Also betray his entire pack and naively believe the humans would let him and her go.
That will be so awesome I haven’t finish reading but i like it already the moment i read it, it certainly feels like one of those teen novels or drama series where the protagonist is put into the middle of a struggle , one tv series that remind me of similar feeling is “Star Crossed” , and i really love that tv series …
Tiva was portray as such a unique “friend” who may stay close to the scene but at the same time feel too far away , definitely looking forward to more interaction with her
As for the opinion that the story was too “forced” , i don’t feel that way because readers need to remember although Choice Fictions allow us to perform multiple choices that will give us different “endings” , the authors can still have a core storyline about the story that they want to tell … example , this is a story about the struggle of werewolves pack where the protagonist need to somehow help his/her species in this struggle… to let the protagonist be a turncoat helping the human may be totally different from the story the author want to tell. Just like the Wayhaven Chronicles , i had read that it is the author’s intention to make it into a warm hearted love story , hence we shouldn’t expect too much drama within it… In the end, it is all about the Vision of the authors where we are only part of their characters…
as for Dena not being a traitor , when some thought she may be the one who betray us… well all i can say that is, it totally fit the real life situation , we meet someone who is good to us … and it is totally practical that someone is really good to us , some people may be suspicious of their true friend’s intention but that doesn’t mean the true friend will really betray us one day… and as the case of Lapu, if we already suspect someone is going to betray us , it could very well that is our pure instinct about character of that person
More spoilers:
True, he does some really questionable stuff. Lapu was also who I suspected all the way through ever since we got to know that someone was betraying the pack. I just feel like ‘coward’ would be a very strong word to use, because after all he did have his moments (not backing down if you convince him to race Tiva as your proxy, or stepping in front of Tiva’s gun) because a coward wouldn’t try any of those things imo. He is just immaturity and insecurity at their worst.
Summary
I’m sorry but I shouldn’t have to convince you to come and help me protect your girlfriend. Him racing for us isn’t really a good example because it doesn’t really test him. But when the moment to protect his girlfriend came he ran away. He wouldn’t have stopped her if I didn’t convince him or literally threaten or drag him to there to protect her.
I have the exact opinion with you about Lapu, running away and leaving his supposed girifriend to her own perish ? Personally i think that was one of the lowest thing a guy can do … most likely Tiva will die if we didn’t interfere
However , based on @Eiwynn 's explanation yesterday ,this can be explain as one of the human behavior who value their own interest more than others, Lapu’s first reaction was to save his own life , rather than thinking about his girlfriend…so this can be a reaction where people really do in real life, it is just one of the human character we may encounter in life, and that’s also what make this story more “realistic”…
Based on Lapu’s personality , i think it is perfectly logical for him to be the traitor because he is more self interest , it will instead be illogical if Lapu turn out to be a “hero” of sort but that doesn’t mean Lapu can’t redeem himself in sequel , although based on logical conscience it will be wise not to trust Lapu at all
Spoilers, again:
I understand what you’re saying. Leaving Tiva at such a time (especially when he claimed to have feelings for her), betraying the pack and potentially endangering all their lives - all dick moves. But, imagine a kid instead of him, he/she would most likely have a similar reaction. I understand Lapu isn’t a kid, but that’s what I mean by immature - he believes Williams would let him live if he delivers him information on the pack, that’s just stupidity right there. I’m just thinking that maybe Lapu just acted out of sheer confusion at not knowing what to do at the sight of Tiva being beaten up, he probably thought both of them were going to die if he tried to defend her and most likely had a ‘flight’ instead of a ‘fight’ reaction. Here’s hoping he grows out of it and becomes a real badass in the sequel (especially now that Tiva has forgiven him and confessed her love to Lapu too).
Him becoming a bad ass not likely. Maybe more confident and selfless probably.
Summary
She didn’t confess her love to him or forgiven him in my playthrough. She slapped him and left him when I made him tell her what he’s was trying to do, which he rightfully deserves. Also she’s apparently going to be a romance option in book 2 now so to late Lapu.
You did the right thing in exposing Lapu, so that Tiva won’t regret in her future
I feel like Lapu is Trevor of the tv series “Suits” , and Jenny was wrong to love him all along … our MC is Mike Ross who did the right thing in exposing Trevor , non-the-less Trevor betray Mike with pitiful excuses … How ironic, Dena is like Rachel who I am dating now, but honestly i am hoping Mike will chose Jenny instead … so in future, my MC may still choose Tiva , and Lapu need to stay far away from us
Hope you don’t mind my responding here! I appreciate your input and I wanted to reply to it.
While, yes the main battle does happen, pacifism, as well as courting the activists puts you in very different ending brackets. A war-like wolf may end up in DC and violently recruited by General Rivera. A pacifist has a very good chance of leaving everything behind to live in a cabin in the woods, or joining a werewolf enclave as a non-violent participant in the werewolf liberation movement. Being non-violent and courting the activists can lead to an entirely different ending at Anna’s father’s mansion after the escape.
-the character are too one dimensional. Ahote wants to be peaceful, Harken wants war, Lapu is a coward.
Ahote starts off wanting to be peaceful, yes, but by the end of chapter 4, he’s ready willing and able to fight back. He starts palling around with Haken even before that, trying to being Haken down to a more reasonable level of resistance. If you get the ending sequence in Sonoma’s werewolf enclave, you’ll find that Ahote has decided to join the resistance, knowingly embracing the potential for outright violence if necessary.
Haken actually just wants to be free. Every so often I give the player a subtle look at him which shows tells of his reluctance to do what he believes must be done. He’s hot under the collar and quick to kill, but that absolutely doesn’t mean that he wants war. He’s also very spiritual, which is referenced a few times in the text, and he prays for the dead (you can see this especially if he kills Lapu)
Lapu is absolutely a coward, but I like to think there’s more to him than that. Much has been made of how he abandons Tiva in chapter 3, and trust me, that’s been on Lapu’s mind too. It’s actually the impetus that put him on the path to betrayal. In his own very foolish way, he thought that the only way he could protect her was to get her out of Haven. Over time, the guilt gnaws at him until there’s nothing left, and he tries to commit suicide in chapter 9 (which players only see if they have no RO)
-plothole: the government was able to detect Werewolves years ago (at least two decades considering the MC’s age). How did they not think about werewolves infiltrating them? Even if the detectors can’t do their jobs you’d think they would ask for blood samples.
Werewolves had moles on the inside from the beginning, including Williams, General Rivera, and several other highly placed operatives. The detection system is now around 20 years out of date, and several ways have been found to get around it (Ahote even hints at this himself in Chapter 5 when he says his wolves in the Yale lab have been cooking something up to avoid detection) Aside from that, which can be pieced together depending on how you progressed through the game, there is a very major character in the upcoming book two who played a BIG role in the infiltration. I understand that you may feel that this is a plot hole, but I assure you it’s been thought through.
I was able to see him try to commit suicide even though I was romancing Bly.
Right, I forgot about that, since Bly’s path is a little different. You only miss the attempted suicide if you’re romancing Dena or Jolon, you’re absolutely right.
Whew got me scared Bly wasn’t considered a romance. I also saved her from kidnapping which helped me have the same amount of time as the other RO as well.
Having seen that scene. I was like.
“You know. I’m gunna be nice just this once and not tell Tiva about this.” I honestly really wish I had now.
Re: the leadership vote, you can fail (purposefully or not) and not be packleader. You can also make a plan with Haken to give him the leadership.
There was no option to be on the side with humans. Or maybe I didn’t get one?.. Torture is, of course, an awful thing, but why not betray your own and not go over to the side of the winners? Maybe I do not care about my “pack”. Why not?
Actually… (secret ending spoilers! ) There is a way to betray the pack. It’s a very hard ending to find, but you can actually join Williams and his human soldiers and leave Haven with him after fighting Haken.
And a cliche. Hot librarian was too striking to me, because I had not seen this cliche for so long, and here it is, back from a long past.
I’m a little baffled here. Are you referring to Dena? He’s / She’s a mousy little thing, hardly strutting his/her stuff. Also, I’d like to think that Dena is a bit more than a cliche. He/she spends the latter half of the game in a fight with her inner rage-monster, and in some instances actually comes to terms with the fact that she really is a monster. Her relationship track goes into more detail on this.
ooo a Suits analogy … I’ll join in (with the caveat that we only look up to the end of last season).
Lapu is very much like Louis Litt … in episode one we see season 1-2 Louis, the bullied/bully, the insecure, the paranoid … does this mean we’ll see Louis evolve into the current Litt! idk … but my guess will be there will be a chance.
Tiva in my mind, is like Mike - the person that knows what needs to be done but who lets their feelings get in the way and suffers because of it. She got burned in the opposite way that Mike does in the show but they are opposites on the same story arc.
Our MC is like Harvey - the anointed one who has to figure out how to get through the minefields seen from both sides. Whatever path we chose, the pack will depend on us to resolve any conflict … we will lead the pack into the future just as Harvey leads the law firm.
Dena in my opinion is most like Rachel - loyal, believes in the MC and will fight by their side to the best of their ability, even if it goes against their feelings and beliefs.
I do not see a Donna yet emerging, nor do I see the various minor characters … I would like to see a Katrina - a person that believes in Lupa/Louis even when others do not. I also hope to see a Scotty, who is my favorite character in the tv series.
