And now I want a burrito!
That’s like someone cut a Subway sandwich into two…

Nevermind. I was trying to be funny there but realized didn’t do it right.
Editing to add: OH! RIGHT! Thats why I couldn’t train/study what I wanted. Requirements.
Dayuuumm! So that’s why I couldn’t get Grandpa Bear’s gift last time. Time to play as a galestalker again, hehehe!
Okay, firstly, I love how much research went into this game. Secondly, these burritos look soooo good. Difficult to eat though! For some reason, I kept thinking the spherical burritos would be perfectly enclosed like some sort of giant tortilla pakora with burrito filling inside, and I had been both confused and tantalised. These burritos look a lot more normal hehe!
Okay, I’ve been biting my tongue for months but I have to ask.
In Ch7 if you choose Podge to join you on one of the missions (the one where you’re riding in the back of a truck and you get attacked by the Cult of Fenris), he brings along a box of alcoholic beverages made from historically accurate recipes, with text on the box describing the historical significance of each one. Does such a thing really exist?
Lol I’ll have to reread that part, but my guess is that it’s a call back to a trend about 10-15 years back where microbreweries were putting out mixed cases of “authentic recipe” Viking ales made with like spruce tips and heather, or some that branched out into barleywine or kvass. Beer nerds loved to geek out on that kind of stuff.
Though you’re more likely to find obscure cocktails in cans nowadays, the Valley is still absolutely packed with microbreweries all putting out pretty wild stuff. So I wouldn’t be surprised if mixed cases with reading material exists around here, and I just haven’t found it yet!
Nice! I think he wrote this around the same time as we got Max Miller’s excellent cookbook Tasting History so that may have been on Kyle’s mind as well. Sadly, I know of no commercial brewery going this hardcore, though I think Dogfish Head tried it once back in like the Obama administration.
Awwww, shucks. But thanks anyway!
Wow, I thought being a Galestalker meant you don’t get to have fun or build relationships with your pack, but I managed to have a good relationship with almost everyone, except Melodie. My absolute favourite bit is all the new scenes where we get to hunt with our pack. Nin always gets really into it and tries to snap at us if we eat before her. Playing as a Galestalker, I had way more fun interactions with Nin and Black Tarn in our wolf forms. But this is my favourite scene out of the new ones:
Thanks so much guys, for all your knowledge re: joining tribes, earning gifts, and accumulating glory/honour/wisdom. Turns out the Ice Wind will accept you if you meet any one of it’s two criteria - so I went in there with a high ‘we can still win’ score and got the Beetle. I also managed to accumulate honor by prioritising my pack while also keeping in mind my PC’s safety, and was finally able to earn Grandfather Bear’s gift.
The Beetle’s power is insane. It gives us so many extra scenes and we learn so much about what’s going on with the background characters! And Grandfather Bear’s gift is almost OP. I hardly ever had to fight anyone because, even without wounds, my 6 Resolve took care of the freezing very efficiently. Speaking of 6 Resolve, I had 11 gifts in this playthrough and I didn’t even get the chance to use all of them. I highly recommend playing as a Philodox Galestalker. I like it more than a theurge who is Shadow Lord/Ghost Council.
Does anyone else have any favourite combinations that help you maximise gifts while retaining mostly the same values?
Saw a guide that gives the stats of each gifts requirements.
My play style says Gaia is the best. Since I learned being practical negates dignity, and not laughter, been selecting jokes instead now (enjoyed those anyway). Wardens is about equal, minus the missing Hummingbird gift details.
Glasswalkers is questionable but ‘possible’.
Furies and then Fangs sits below walkers as same.
Gnawers don’t but forced otherwise.
Curious what Striders would consider.
Edit: Forgot to add, now that I know ALL the spirits requirements, I dont have to wait to see who accepts me or what not. I know which will. Thus being able to have gifts sooner than chapter 4/5. Wish they stored the data in journal after meeting spirits if forget. Wrote them down instead. (8 at most accepts me, 5 wholeheartedly only)
Dignity/Laughter has a third wheel affecting it, practicality. I am still dropping to 0 because practical choices, ugh, that set is bit annoying.
Im not dignified, practical or a joker obviously.
The others have spirit vs rage, survive vs win, pay vs understand, litany vs not.
@Moochava It took some time, but I finally got around to reading this one. Night Road was a work of sheer excellence, so its great to see that Book of Hungry Names continues to maintain the same quality of storytelling I’ve come to expect from your work. My immersion has been greatly increased by my own familiarity with the setting, as I’ve been a Western Masshole for almost two-and-a-half decades. However, as the citizen of a small town near the Connecticut-Massachusetts border, I’m a little disappointed that Springfield and its more southern areas only got a couple of passing mentions.
Also, is the title of Chapter 6 a reference to “Mohammed’s Radio.” I love that song, so the the title card stuck out to me.
This guide?
Nope.
This one. Writer said the Dignity/Laugh trait also confuses them. “Hard to figure out which isn’t a joke.” In their case.
I will look at that one.
Turns out Wardens, Gaia (loves me), Silver Fangs (surprised me), Ghost Council (loves me as Gaia does) all happy with me.
Edit to add: Hence why I prefer stats within choices, so know which is what. Author vs Reader isn’t 100% in same mind with words used.
This is common in my experience. Unless I’m told what stats are being tested/affected, I end up having to parse out the author’s unique way of communicating (along with their personal values, or the values of their narrator) through trial and error; not everyone operates with the same experience, colloquialisms, and connotations of a language. (I’m referring to native-speakers like myself here, for context. I can’t speak to any other experience.)
I have mixed feelings about this quirk of choice-based games - I think it might be impossible to write with every audience in mind, after all. It’s not so bad when there are checkpoints I can reload from, but if I misunderstand the author’s meaning halfway through the game at a crucial moment, sometimes my only option is to just start over and lose hours. I’d rather not have to deal with it, so whenever there is an option to demystify the author’s intent for stat changes/checks, I take it.
If you don’t mind spoiling yourself of the choices, i recommend code diving while playing, you will know every choice stats and it effect, be warned tho, it might spoil some mystery or simply give too much info that you shouldn’t know yet.
I don’t mind and still able to keep my immersion but can’t say the same for others, it work on PC btw, not sure about mobile.
Don’t see that being possible and rather not do so.
I tend to restart. Alot.
Also, the guides are all outdated or even missing base game info too.
Forgot to mention.
Litany and the Dignity/Laughter alters each mission.
Humans Must Understand, Spirits is our Answer, We can still Win, always stays at 3. Unless Stormcat goes silly, then drops to 2, but immediately goes back to 3.
Glasswalkers, Ghost Council and Gaia are very sturdy contenders. Dont have info on Council gifts fully yet. Hart Wardens seem strong enough along with Furies.
Fangs greyed out again via chat with Melodie.
There is CoG Save Manager that work very well for CoG and HG games, again, only on PC.
Updated previous post
Also another note
Chuldren of Gaia and Black Fury has the most gifts I can acquire without changing my personality.
Wish Ghost Council spirits were easier to find on lists from Blight zone. I not opened yet.
