I usually make my war vet Michael Corleone for reference’s sake, my Black Hand Man Alphonse Luciano. I dunno, it just has a nice ring to it.
Black Hand member seems to be the best background for me and his name was “Christopher Caponi” but sometimes I pick “Ceravano” for the last name.
I use my real name – Jimmy Dattilo. That’s as Italian-American as one gets.

There are so many other terrible things people do, terrible things people are forced to do due to circumstances, and yet we somehow obsess with the sexual so much more than those other things, which can cost you or others their lives just as easily. Instead of Carina, imagine we have Corwin, a young man who takes a highly gruelling job he hates as a coal miner, because it’s the only job available in the town for an unskilled teen male in need of money to help his sick parents care for his younger brothers and sisters, a job that after 15 hellish years of terrible working conditions takes his life when he painfully dies of the black lung. Was his situation any better because it wasn’t “sexual”? It’s my feeling that he was certainly as raped by circumstances as Carina was. They both were forced by circumstances to take a rough job they strongly didn’t want. Both of them make the best choice they believe is open to them.
As the story is currently written (I never read the original), I just don’t see Carina as being a rape victim in the way we usually see such matters. She made a choice to sell her body, a painful choice she hates making, but does anyway out of love for her family. There is great nobility in her sacrifice, because she’s giving up something of great value to her, her dream of being a virgin bride. She clearly has difficulty going through with her decision, but afterward, if you tip her heavily, she gives you a long lingering kiss that makes your toes curl, just as the other girls do. That just doesn’t strike me as rape victim behavior.
Her employer’s behavior does come across as proprietary and coercive, but it was standard employer behavior back then to lock employees in and prevent them from leaving until their workday was over. The typical garment factory owner of the time was no less of an ogre towards “his girls”.
I can’t help but suspect that the reader’s view of prostitution will generally color their view of how terrible Carina’s situation is. If the reader believes prostitution is a terrible institution that victimizes women, then Carina is a victim regardless of the choice she made to be there. If sex isn’t something that the reader believes needs to be special, then the brothel is just another job, and possibly even a job that can be enjoyed once the person adjusts (ie. Monique). Then Carina’s situation becomes not much worse than a visit to the dentist, and once she gets past her initial fear and lets go of the idea that she must be a virgin when she marries, she’ll be fine.

BTW, Angel reminds me a bit of Natalie Portman’s character in The Professional.

@Shoelip If you save Carina, give her a job, then date her, you find out that she’s still a virgin and that it’s really, really important to her thar her first time is on her wedding night.

@P_Tigras Hm, I don’t remember that. Also, I’d hardly call that a dream. It’s just something she feels is important. Not an ambition or aspiration. Well, it’d be pretty sad if it was.

I don’t see why you feel the word “dream” is inappropriate. It was pretty typical for a young woman to dream of her marriage day, and of the white gown she’d wear during that day. And for much of the early 20th century there was a perception that only the pure and virginal were entitled to wear white.
I felt the word dream was inappropriate because like I said I’ve never seen that part of the game and you just said that “it’s really, really important to her” so it could just have been outside pressure rather than her own desire.
Hearing that her only dream in life is to be married as a virgin I’m sort of glad I haven’t tried dating her on any recent play-throughs as that’s a pretty lame life’s dream. No offense intended Vendetta. I just mean I wouldn’t have that much respect for a person like that in real life.
