I think the option of ‘raping’ Carina should be there, no one is forcing anyone to do it if they don’t want to.
@Epicazeroth So let me just get this straight. You are in fact saying that the absolute only choices for poor people in the 1930’s who could not get legal work was to either die, or become a prostitute… Is that right?
@Shoelip - sorry, I didn’t follow you. Are you asking about the protagonist of Vendetta’s game?
@noogai and @Epicazeroth – thanks, good points.
@Shoelip: no, not poor people in the 1930s. My example isn’t historical. And it’s not about “poor people” in general. Not all poor people will face the choice I’m describing. But some will.
The protagonist of Vendetta’s game is not one of those people, if that really is the non sequitur you were going for. He starts with money in his belt clip, debts he can collect from others, and quickly has the option to inherit a business from his sister.
Is it really so hard to see what I’m getting at? The difference between your example and the protagonist is that the protagonist became a petty crook instead of a prostitute. Sure his sister worked hard to support them both but it’s pretty clear he was never in a comfortable position. He made the choice to take charge of his own fate instead of letting things just go through the path of least resistance.
Also, switching the gender pronouns and nothing else doesn’t make the character male. That’s one of my biggest problems with the stupid gender switching feature in choice games. It just replaces the word but keeps everything else the same. The characters written as male are still male, the characters written as female are still female. They just aren’t called that.
@Havenstone Your right about that, but this kind of underground thing was common back then. I tend to read things in a pg mode(and remember i said that was my first interperatation of it) of mind so i didnt really look into the whole scene thing,but one of the best things about this game is that its realistic. If people have a problem with the truth, its their own issue and not the game’s. Or they dont have to choose that option.
@Syndicate You know, I wouldn’t feel as good about always choosing to save her if I didn’t have a choice. I personally find that being a good guy in a bad world is the best kind of power fantasy. All these games that give you giant chainsaw guns and have you playing as some sort of bizarre human gorilla hybrid with no hair and no personality are just bland. What really makes me feel powerful is resolving a volatile situation without anyone having to die because I’m just that awesome. You can go to hell Marcus Fenix, Superman can kick your ass any day.
@Syndicate – and is still common today, sadly.
I don’t have a problem with the truth that rape happens. I’m concerned that our society is too ready to downplay that truth – and it’s easy for stories about rape to feed that, as I’ve said above.
@Shoelip, OK, got it – you’re saying that when you’re out of all other options to get money, there’s always petty crime. Really? Maybe in Grand Theft Auto. In the real world, theft is not some universally available livelihood. Especially to people - male or female - who don’t have a lot of body strength, or a network that can get them a weapon. Especially in places where violent criminal gangs already dominate the petty crime scene. “Well, you could always just steal enough to feed your family,” is wildly unrealistic advice.
Anyway, it seems clear that you don’t think there’s any circumstance under which someone can be forced into prostitution short of a literal gun to the head. Readers can make up their own minds.
On pronouns and the distinction you’re refusing to recognize between “male/female” and “masculine/feminine”… maybe you’d like to continue that conversation on the gender thread? I’m not sure where it’s coming from on this one.
And I agree that one of the great things about CoG in general is that you have the choice to do bad things or good things, and that good-guy bad-world makes for a terrific story. Like I said above, I just think that some specific choices (like rape and gay-bashing) ought to be handled more sensitively than giving them to a CoG protagonist will allow.
@Shoelip I always save her to. I don’t like the rape scene, neccesarly, but im glad its there. You have the option to play as a nice guy, a monster, a guy who helps people when he can but looks at for himslef, or something in between. These types of people were around then and are still around today.
@Everybody who’s Debating over the Rape Thing,
why are we arguing over this! I’m not saying it’s right but the game “is” Vendetta’s so if he wants to put it in, let him do it! Whether you like it or not, just let him make his game!
@Zed, easy, man. No one’s stopping Vendetta from making his game. No one’s telling him what he can or can’t put in it. He invited me to explain why I wasn’t happy with the rape scenes he’d written, and we’ve been having a thought-provoking discussion about his story. At least, I’ve found it thought-provoking, and I hope I’m not the only one.
@Havenstone, I’m sorry for tht man, i’m just tired of waitin for the next part of the demo beyond the maze to be up.
PS I do agree tht it’s a thought-provoking discussion im just dying from the constant waiting for the game.
@Vendetta, what new updates have you made so far?
@shoelip if she turns to petty crime and gets killed or arrested her family’s screwed don’t u think
Yes, but if she gets killed or arrested in her current job, or her employers decide to be stingy, the effect is the same.
@mateller, he’s right u know
…ok totaly off topic from the debate but am i the only one who named their character Lucky Luciano
Anything else than Vito Corleone is unacceptable.
I picked Vito Corleone my first time, but then I started getting lazy and just picking whatever.
Ah lucky Luciano, theres an interesting dude…
