United We Stand - Political WIP

Perhaps the intro could start off with you playing you’re former MC as he/she describes there son/daughter or whoever the new mc is as they reminisce about the events of the first game.

While I hope my mc gets to make his heroic last stand against the Nazi’s by burning down the national census office, archives and most ministries in order to prevent what turned out to be my own country’s greatest war crime, handing Nazi Germany our completely intact census records, it would mean he’d be long dead at the start of the game.
So the intro you’re proposing might not be applicable to all mc’s as for the gay ones it is their brother or sister who are going to have the child not the mc themselves.
In my case that means that to the new mc he’d be their great-uncle. A rather more distant relationship in most cases.

I believe the new game is meant to open with the funeral of either Wulf or Riga though, so that’s a cameo of sorts.

Good genes and the royal lifestyle with its excellent living conditions and medical care no doubt help as well.
Hmm…for people who go the authoritarian monarchy way it could mean King Georg is likely still alive, particularly since he’s the mc’s junior by a decade and would be in his early to mid 70’s by the time of the sequel.
For some mc’s, such as @Eiwynn 's I believe, he might even be their still living grandfather if the mc’s grandmother was the female noble New Order mc who can likely marry him.
For the other two female backgrounds romancing the Prince he might still be your grandfather but your own father is likely a recognised bastard who got made into the head of a cadet branch of the royal family at best.

Either way even for the other New Order backgrounds if you go for authoritarian monarchy under the “rightful” King he’s likely to still be alive during the sequel.
For that matter so can Queen Katherine be (though she’d be in her late 80’s by the time of the sequel), on the moderate Solidarity route, where it presumably eventually fuses outright with the Moravian SDP during the occupation as a broad, left-wing resistance and eventually turns into an ANC-esque governing party afterwards, provided of course the monarchy is retained at all after the war. It is conceivable the left wing might retain the Queen to shore up the legitimacy of their post-war governments and get in on the Marshall plan, in spite of strong ideological opposition to monarchism.
In contrast to Georg though her role would in that case likely be reduced to pure Scandinavian-esque royal symbolism.

Ahhh thanks, I’m always so shy about writing comments non-anonymously so this was great to hear!

Also, I know it may be a bit too late to jump on the Mc’s faceclaim bandwagon, but in my head I always imagine either:

So this makes me wonder, how are POC (and/or immigrants) regarded in Moravia in the 1930s?

Furthermore, @AlexClifford1994 who are the people in the Solidarity ROs pictures? I read about New Order’s but I really can’t find anything about Solidarity’s, although I think I can recognize: Jules/Sash as Marianne Breslauer, Rosa as Gerda Taro and Harry as Robert Capa?? Franz really kind of looks like a young Terence Hill too!

And finally, have you ever considered putting some kind of personal data in the stats? Like Name, age, party personality etc? It would really make things more immersive in my opinion.

@AlexClifford1994 is the game on hiatus?

Yes, in the sense that I am not currently working on it, and haven’t done for some weeks. That is not because I am working on something else, it is simply because my real life job has not really permitted me the free time to do so. I apologise to you guys, particularly those of you that are regulars on this thread, it must be frustrating. But I work a very demanding job, for instance it is 11.15pm here in the UK and I have just finished my work with the alarm set for 6.30 tomorrow. I’m not looking for sympathy at all, just stating the facts that right now I don’t have enough hours in the day to make progress with United We Stand. But it’s been 18 months since I first put up the demo so I guess you guys are used to waiting

Very interesting question, and thanks for commenting! I would say similar to most of Europe at this time, with a degree of suspicion, if only because they are so rare.

Fantastic knowledge of 1930s photographers! You’re spot on with the Solidarity pictures, apart from Franz, who is different people in the 2 pictures i have put forward of him, one being International Brigade officer Fred Copeman and the other being a google image result for red front fighter or some other similar search.

Definitely something I could do pretty easily, good idea

@AlexClifford1994 I’ve been playing the demo multiple time’s now and I can say I thoroughly love it! I do have 2 question’s and I’m sorry if it’s been asked before, but how does the alliance between 2 party’s work? Does the street fighting have any effect on support given during the election?

@Soviet thanks very much! To answer your question, the alliance will mean that you fight the election and (hopefully) form a government together. It makes victory easier but there will be more compromise. The street fighting does effect electoral support, winning street fights has been increasing your party’s support throughout the game although during the actual campaign there will be choices to make about how to use the violence, with the chance that it could damage your party’s reputation.

Damn, that’s rough. Don’t sweat it. Whenever you update the game, we will be happy as ducks, take your time and try not to fall apart with so much work.

Does compromising and/or romancing certain people put you in any danger with people from your party? I always feel like Riga and Rosa might kill me if they think I’m going too far with certain things or if I choose to compromise too much.

thanks!

Certainly both your political stance and your choice of partner have the potential to lead to a falling out with Riga or Rosa. If you’ve played the game a few times you can guess what Rosa’s reaction would be to finding out the player is having an affair with Kant for instance. The player will have a choice as to whether to defy their leader or not, obviously with repercussions for later in the game.

I’ve only done the Kant romance so far but you did a great job building up and having that romantic climactic love scene in her office. So I’m also really curious of what will be the repercussions not even going to the fact that she’s a high-ranking politician and married.

@AlexClifford1994 hey man, I know you aren’t working on the game right now, but I have a problem to report for when you start working on it again. New Order chapter 5:

“We would risk a SDP takeover.”

Should be National Bloc.

So I’m going to approach this as someone who’s very much into politics, so please be warned that I may nitpick some.

My first thing is that you’ve done a spectacular job at not glorifying either side! I appreciate the fact that the Socialist part didn’t mention the USSR at all. I haven’t played through the New Order party, but I will assume that you didn’t mention anything like the Holocaust, minorities, or racial superiority.

But I do have a complaint regarding the Socialists. It is this, the Socialist party wasn’t quite as hardline as you made them out to be; as the Communist party was very much in favor of violent revolutions, the Socialists were more akin to trusting in Democracy. So while I loved the fact that I could discuss with Union officials and such, I’m a little peeved, coming to the table as a Communist, that it was the Socialist Party doing that took the spotlight for the left, as the Facists were the star of the Right. But I do know that the word “Communist” and “Communism” is a politically dirty word nowadays.

Secondly, I didn’t feel as though there was a lot of depth to my character. It was kind of a “Choose-your-gender-and-name-and-off-you-go!” feeling. While it could work for some types of games, I didn’t feel as though it worked for this one. I really wanted to be able to choose who my character was, I wanted to play as the reluctant-revolutionary who put the people ahead of his politics. But I didn’t feel as though I could do that.

Also, the romance part of the game seemed like a sidenote. Not an actual part of the game. I didn’t even know who was romanceable until the final scene, which was incredibly confusing, as I was pursuing Rosa and then got told off in the final part. Also, I really wanted a way to choose on my orientation.

The actual writing of the game was good. I noticed some grammatical issues and several sections that I feel could have been improved, but over-all, I think that it is definitely a good start. I do encourage you to check the final scenes of the game, as that was where I found the most problems, but otherwise, I could approve this with some work.

The biggest complain I have is that there’s no character depth! I want to know all of the juicy backstories of the characters! I want to know who exactly I’m working with/for! And I also felt as though you were throwing characters into the mix, without a lot of warning.

To sum it all up, I’m pleased with it so far. I enjoyed playing it, but felt as though it was pretty shallow when it came to story depth. Also, character customization. I’m going to press that point home as much as possible. Then finally, I wish that there were more political parties, even if they’re “separate,” I kinda wanted to play as something else beside the two.

Text block, alert, IK. But I wanted to give this an honest and open review.

If you’ve read the history of Moravia path you’d know that Solidarity is a democratic socialist party, not a Communist one as Rosa Wulf more or less kicked out Kruler and the doctrinaire, Communists/Stalinists herself.

As for character development this game does have an insane number of variations and variables already, but I always do like more character development myself, still I wouldn’t want to overburden the author either.

Ahh. To be completely honest, I didn’t even know that there was a History of Moravia. Must have missed that.

But yes, I agree that the author shouldn’t be overburdened. I’m just expressing my opinion. Anway.

Popping into the discussion late, after following the story itself (but not the thread, so bear with me).

I wanted to like this, I really did. The story was well written, with interesting explorations of compromise and idealism, politics in a crumbling state, and party politics. Vitori is oddly seductive, although I keep wondering if she’s going to jump on me and gnaw the flesh from my bones.

However:

  1. I’m aware that this was discussed early in the thread, but we seem awfully inclined to explain away the fact that there is an entire route dedicated to playing as fascists. Our ‘hero’ can collaborate with (and sleep with) a representative of the pro-Nazi Mussolini regime. And we’re not just playing as a potentially misled, possibly sympathetic grunt, but as an influential fascist policymaker–a Moravian Goebbels. This is the most disgusting premise I’ve seen since…ever.

  2. Outside the characters previously mentioned, a of the other ROs are hard to like. Rosa is painfully dogmatic, Sash’s only personality trait is that she’s genderqueer (hooray for tokenism), and everyone else’s defining personality trait is that they have none.

  3. I know that Mature Content is a staple of CoGs now, but why all the gratuitous sex? The ROs could still have been heartwarming without going into detail.

Rant over. Whew. All the salt aside, I don’t mean to reflect on the author’s own personality or skills. I just cannot swallow the flaws here–which is a shame, because this work is otherwise delightful.

I very seldom post on this thread, but I felt the need to respond to your post, since I feel like you wrote it in a very eloquent way.

  1. After the recent U.S. election, I initially felt very uncomfortable with this game for precisely the reason that we could play as fascists. I started to feel a bit hypocritical to ignore the issues with playing as the Socialist party, though, when I remember what my family went through after Mao Zedong came to power in China. I know he’s Communist, and this game has no Communists, but it reminded me that “left-wing” systems could be exploited to horrific consequences. I felt a bit better when I read that the writer has this fascist party focused on patriotism and national superiority, and not racial superiority. It has helped me develop more comfort with the idea of playing “the bad guy”, but if I’m being honest, I do wish that he found a way to more strongly make this distinction in the game. It does feel strange to not acknowledge this aspect of fascism, especially when Alessandra is a member of the Mussolini government. It turns Nazism and white supremacy into the elephant in the room. With that said, however, I do think that going so far as to compare the protagonist to Goebbels is a bit offensive. No where does the protagonist even have an implication that they might consider doing or supporting things as horrible as he did.
  2. I think we’ll have to disagree on the ROs. I felt like each romance had its own feeling, which was remarkable since they were for the most part, interchangeable. Rosa, for instance, may on the surface seem dogmatic, but she’s clearly to me a tired and exhausted woman who is sinking into her work out of a desperation to fix a system she sees as breaking down.
  3. I disagree with you…to an extent. I feel like the sex scenes are appropriate in that they are optional, and I think that they don’t reach the level of the sex scenes in say, Heart of the House. With that said, I do think it’s easy to notice that this game is written by a man purely because of the way he describes the women that men can romance in comparison to everyone else.
