I actually thought my mc fared pretty well against the thralls? She didn’t have trouble beating them in book 1
And it wasn’t like in the scene we were talking about fighting supernaturals just a tree that was on a way and Adam seemed to think mc wouldn’t have found some way over it.
b-but…my mc would’ve totally smacked herself in that tree…cose she wasnt paying attention or worse…fall face first on it…
(cose I’m a klutz in real life who keep falling on her face lol so is my mc…only difference she got a sexy ava to come save her from the bruises lol) .
Didn’t all of the ROs does the same? N and M offered help to the MC in their own way. A just took the initiative. I really don’t see anything wrong with it to be honest.
Also that tree blocked path for other people too. If anything I think you can at least give A credit for the public service done right. And while on the subject, just think of possibilities here if you turn things up a notch!
A: What ails you, detective?
MC: gestures vaguely The world!
MC: sighs theatrically Wish we could do something to make it better…
A: CRITICAL HIT, SUPER EFFECTIVE
A: Brb
A week later, news headlines:
-Global warming reversed!
-Species thought extinct re-emerge!
-Cancer cured!
-World leaders work together and reach a consensus!
MC: Holy @#$%, what? Did you?.. What???
A: Oh that? shrugs dismissively 'Twas nothing. Just something I did on the side, in the spare time. Didn’t have to put much effort into it, really. Yeah, totally didn’t. Why do you ask?
I am coming late to the A vs humans debate, but I wanted to throw my two cents here.
I don’t hold against A this trait from A, because of two main reasons.
Reason one is, if your MC points out that not all humans are evil, A recognises this and they apologises to the MC because they are right. With this, I just get the impression that is obviously a sensitive subject, and in the heat of the moment they say things that they regret intermediately, thus the apology.
My second reason to not hold a grudge over this, is because despite everything A says, they also will stand to protect humanity from any dangers, even if it puts their live in danger. This tells to me, once again, that they do indeed have resentment against humans, but at the same time, they know is not right to feel that way, and that’s why they put their life in the line to protect that of the humans they say they hate so much.
With this said, I haven’t read the other comments, so if someone has already say this… apologies. In my defence, I am walking home under the rain
Yeah^^ I can’t really blame A for holding their grudges against humans, do remember also that if you pick a certain choice in the demo where mc says “I suppose it’s best if some humans will react that way of supernatural”, A lashes out saying something along the lines of “some humans?!” implying that most if not all humans will react warry/negative, and then mc calls them out by going “yes, some humans, I’m here working with you am I not?”. Then A actually apolagises and sort of acknowledges that there are good people too. But in the end, no matter how long the vamps have been alive everyone has flaws, no one is perfect. And we’re gonna get to experience some of that during the relationships.
Eh I just feel that A shouldn’t be so different with a mc who’s uncomfortable with the supernatural since their being the same way with humans. But maybe that just a flaw in A’s character but nevertheless they are still my personal favorite despite that.
I agree with you 100% that this scene is gush worthy.
M is just… a cutie. I love how the MC doesn’t have to say anything and M just listens without being all “pfft, make me.” And F is also a cutie. I love F using the phrase “sweet-as-pie.”
One year later After finally getting to play the first book and the demo of book two and reading the questions on Tumblr, I think I can do a review of book one. I’ll try to keep it to things that can be improved on in the future books and not the first book.
The positive
The plot is unique and original, it doesn’t follow or try to be its original source material.
The characters are diverse, both culturally, racially, gender/sexuality and personality wise, none of the characters are shown in a stereotypical manner for their race, sexuality, culture.
Despite my somewhat non-interest in ‘human in a supernatural’ story I actually find myself enjoying the plot, it doesn’t insult you for being human.
It doesn’t assume your character past, I love any game that does this.
The fact that the main character mother is still alive
The fact that Adam/Ava is demisexual.
The Meh
The main character’s friends can be bland and uninteresting at times. Tina’s a happy and friendly cop who is buddy-buddy with the main character, and Vera’s a father who takes every time he can to get some quiet time. I noticed in the demo for book two we are somewhat forced to choose between the two at some parts. I would like it if later in book two we see a more complex side of them.
The villain in book one is kind of cliche, he doesn’t really have a complex plot and it seems like he’s just there to be hated. Since Murphy isn’t dead, I would like to see him being more complex in the later book’s.
Some of the characters just seem kind of there. We learn their name and some of their personality but that’s really it.
We can’t exactly be mean to Douglas or push him away…
Bobby is pretty one dimensional, they seem to be there just to be hated on at times.
The things I disliked
Nate/Nat and Mason/Morgan are pretty problematic both early and what seems to be later in the relationship as well.
Some examples of what seen for Nate/Nat would be:
Examples
They are shown to have an overprotective nature towards the main character, while there’s nothing wrong with this depending on how far it goes it can become controlling behavior
They attempted to or tried to guilt trip the main character.
They take the blame or attempt to steer the blame away from the other member’s wrongdoing. While this isn’t problematic in itself, it eventually does when it seems that Nate/Nat probably wouldn’t do this for the main character.
Some examples of what seen for Mason/Morgan would be:
Examples
They insult and degrade the main character for no real reason.
They make sexually or lewd comments towards the main character despite the main character might be uncomfortable with these type of comments.
Deep into the relationship it seems they allow the main character to touch them non-sexually but they never reciprocate or ask for these type of touches. (Though you could say in a way this makes a problematic main character.)
Threating the main character for doing something harmless that most people in a relationship do both deep and early in the relationship. (this is shown in the demo for book two with Felix/Farah)
Eventually following through with those threats if provoked enough. This is extremely problematic because it applies physical abuse which it’s never okay to hit your partner unless they hit you first. (and even then you should look for other alternatives before that.)
Adam/Ava and Felix/Farah also have some problematic things, but not anything that would turn a healthy relationship into an unhealthy relationship.
Feedback
if it isn’t too much I wouldn’t mind if deeper into a relationship:
Ex
Apologized for how they behaved earlier in the relationship
Actually feel bad for how they treated/treat the main character if they do something that harms or hurt the main character or say something that hurts the main character.
If the main character was uncomfortable with Mason/Morgan’s sexual comments, I feel that later down Mason/Morgan should least try to keep it in their head.
General Feedback
I would love to see most of the characters who didn’t have much importance in the first book have more of an importance in book two.
I would like for the main character to be able to be more standoffish.
I’m a big fan of the defrosting the Ice Queen/King trope it would be interesting if the main character can be this in the later books.
Results
In my opinion:
Story: 9/10
Based on routes:
Adam/Ava: 7/10
Nate/Nat: 6/10
Farah/Felix: 9/10
Mason/Morgan: 5/10
I mainly made this post because I felt like I was coming off rude in an ask I sent to you and I wanted to explain it more clear since what I wrote was probably a confused mess, so my apologies and if you still want to answer it that’s fine, I really want to hear your response since I might have read some of your answers wrong. I also don’t hate the characters, and I won’t go out and harras people who have different opinions than me, this is all fiction after all.
While we’re talking about opinions, I would like to hear other people opinion, maybe I will able to see some things from another angle.
I think this is best put on the official WIP thread for Book 2 in order for Sera to easily see feedback and then return here for more discussion.
Here’s the link by the way:
Edit: Just saw that this a Book 1 review if so it’s better to be here I suppose but Sera might not be able to see it since this thread has mutliple discussions all at once. It would be best to send it to her directly. But if you have feedback on Book Two demo, the above link would be the best place to post it.
You think I should delete my comment here and repost it there or don’t delete it and just post the comment there, It’s both a review of book one and feedback.
Leave it here so that other fans could read it and give their own thoughts on your post and post to the link above. Just bold the line that your post is an overall assessment based from Book 1 and Book 2 demo. =)
I just checked my Patreon account and saw that I received a message from Sera a few days ago…and I just totally fangirled. And the sad part is - I know just how pathetic I sounded and I sent the message, anyway. hahaha
Also…
While I’m not agreeing or disagreeing 100%, I must admit, my score for my Book One “M” route was the same as your score here. lol However, my 10/10 score would be for the LT route(s) and my two routes tied at 9/10 would be “A” and “N” cuz one is just like, “No, you complicate things. Get away.” And the other is just a big marshmallow. lol I gave my “F” route a solid 7/10; he’s goofy and cute, but I prefer a guy who’s either rough around the edges, but very caring on the inside. Or very openly caring and kind. Not to mention protective. And tall. hahaha
Fair warning - incoming rant!
The comment you made about A being demisexual… my sister said she thinks I’d fall under the “demisexual category,” even though I’ve identified as heterosexual my whole life (cuz I’d never even heard of - well, a lot of other sexualities, actually). Although, that assessment may not be completely incorrect (I had to Google “demisexual”); that kind of does sound like me. I’m 21-yrs old, and have little interest in starting a relationship because I’ve only ever been really attracted to one guy in my whole life… And even he was easy for me to get over. lol !GASP! Am I some crazy combo of A and N? Outwardly N, inwardly A…?
Puh haven’t been here for some days, since I wanted to stay away from the demo to wait for the whole booklet, but I guess that is no longer an option . But First I have to Work.
@Nathaniel For the M and N thing Ithink that’s one thing that can’t change, like M’s attitude and how they’re all about sex in the beginning is just part of who they are, not saying it’s necessarily a good thing but more a flaw, and it’s oart of their character. Same thing with N veing over protective, it’s like calling spongebob annoying. Although I’m not sure if ur giving feedback or thats ur opinion, if it’s just how you feel then forget what I said lol.
However for this, I dont think any of the routes will turn unhealthy, maybe tense but M for example isn’t always gonna be focused on sex, when they come to term with their feelings it’ll be more about loyalty and not just sex, i mean dont expect M to turn soft or anything but like ou know they’ll have their moments
Yeah and definitely not this don’t worry, sera wont be including any abuse with the ro’s and even if she was that kinda writer, I dont think any of the vamps would abuse the mc in to the relationship or even before the relationship, even M as aggressive as they are wouldn’t hit mc (probably cuz of rebecca lol) , especially if they were dating.
The worst thing I imagine that can happen is, that one of them loses (for whatever Reason) control over their instincts and they try to bite the detective. Which I can really see happen, especially with N and there stronger hunger? for blood.
I mean, I don’t want to say no becasue only Sera knows this for sure. But basing this comment on answers Sera has given on tumblr, like for example, how all the Agents working on the Agency have an extremely good self control, I think it would be unlikely to be on a situation in which any of the members of UB lose control over their need for blood.
