The Ratman Cometh - WiP

Ooh, you’ve given me a veritable treasure trove of off the beaten path weaponry, good sir. Merci beaucoup for the thought fodder.

…you’ve also given me a list of countries/eras to avoid once I’ve perfected time travel, but that’s neither here nor there. I’m also trying to figure out the… the head snakes. Dude looks so earnest about defending their honor.

I really liked what you’ve got so far. The style is very something, and I can’t quite put my finger on what, but very humorous and balanced - and I know there’s only two characters so far, but Brena is very intriguing. The system you’ve proposed is always interesting - randomness of that is a rare occurence in text games, understandably.

Also, since you mentioned there will be tiered checks, I’m curious - are you planning on implementing some sort of save or checkpoint system? I imagine some people might find it frustrating if they haven’t previously encountered dice roll systems and keep getting arrows to the face.

Glad to see you’re liking what’s up there so far! (And sorry for taking so long to reply…)
I’m also happy to see the word “balanced” used in relation to my scribblings - sometimes I worry I’m skewing a bit too much one way or another, so I’m tickled to see that this worry is (so far) misplaced.

As for the skill checks… I wasn’t planning on implementing a save/checkpoint system, mostly because the hypothetical ‘arrow to the face, everyone dies’ sorts of situations would be few and far between. I’ve also been considering ‘no deaths, crazy explanations for survival’ because I think coming up with plausible explanations for surviving the unsurvivable would be loads more fun than death scenes…

That said… It’s still all very much in the initial planning stages right now - I might even just sit on skill checks until (and if) I start on the actual game I had in mind for all this… maybe just leave this project without checks as such, have some things be dependent on class but not much else.

File it all under we’ll see what we’ll see for now, I think.

whisper this thing is still a thing /whisper

The Ratman Cometh still.

I’ve kicked the beginning back in time a bit so that you don’t start directly at the Dove. Also, there’s an action sequence now, yay. And you can kind of customize your character a bit. There are more characters and, also, you get to finally meet the Ratman. But things kind of petered out after that because apparently there’s an error according to quicktest and whatnot but I can’t recreate it running through the thing? Which is why I’m sharing it with y’all now instead of when I had the next bit did like I wanted to. So if you hit an error, you know what to do.

So, yeah. Here this is.Have at it. And don’t be gentle with me, either, please.

Okay, I must be stupid because I can’t get past the riddle.

I hate riddles.

Same here. Definitely an interesting concept, but I’m unable to progress past the riddle.

I’ve run through the tallest buildings I’d expect to find in a Medieval town such as a castle, tower, citadel or cathedral along with more out of the box thinking about where they might meet - e.g. the city walls, sewers, tunnels etc.

Could you maybe put a hint somewhere in the text?

I put Library as my answer, and got past the riddle.

Hope that helps. Unless there’s another riddle that I’m not aware of; then apologies.

Library or bookstore will get you past the riddle. I’ve been toying with removing it period, to be honest, but I’ve added a bit in the text to make it a little more clear (I hope.) I just don’t know how long it’ll take for the updated file to make its appearance online…

Thank y’all for playing, though.

A tall building with lots of stories.

That’s not a good enough hint?

'Tis a shame that catwoman is already copyrighted as she would make a great companion or foe for the Ratman. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Glad to see this is back alive.

Yay! I’m so happy to see this back in action!

I didn’t find the puzzle too hard, at first I tried to think if any specific buildings had been mentioned but then I saw the ‘stories’ bit and my first thought was ‘library’. (Before you added the extra hint in there, that is.)

Anyway, I love it. I adore the humor weaved in throughout. I have one li’l error for you:

You don’t need both the ‘so’ and the ‘and’ at the start of the sentence.

One other housekeeping thing you might want to do is change the link at the very first post to the one you put up right here, since the first one doesn’t seem to work.

Okay I really loved your work! but…I spent almost 10 minutes trying to find the actual link of the game :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: so you might wanna change that bit in the OP…

Done and done and done. It might take a bit for the change to pop up, but the link in the OP should work now. If it doesn’t, yell at me, and I’ll try to fix it up.

A quick question, regarding skin color: I used some of the very first examples listed here for the skin tone options in the game. Is it enough, do y’all think? Or are there more/better options I’d be better served going along with?

Felinegirl could be a thing. Just saying :man_shrugging:

Do you mean Ratwoman?

EDIT: Nevermind, I seem to have figured it out. I don’t know what I did, but I can compile now. Huzzah!

The current riddle is at least partially case sensitive, as it accepts library and Library, but rejects LIBRARY and LiBrArY. Is that intentional?
