The Nascent Necromancer (WIP)

Oh okay thanks and I finally looked up when Tales is and wow where has that been all my life :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Also, Ewwww so glad it’s not a thing anymore. :face_vomiting:

Perhaps, I’m weird but the brother kiss thing wasn’t that bad in my eyes. It was weird sure, but he wasn’t blood related and so maybe he had a crush since he was young. Obviously it was one sided. It seemed rather pointless though to include it. Your MC never ponders why your ā€œbrotherā€ felt that way for you, and MC doesn’t mourn him as much as I’d hope, as the writing starts focusing on a different character death immediately, new goals, battles, and romances. I think if you’re going to include something as taboo as that, either make the scene optional, use it for characterization, or don’t include it at all.

Yeah. Like there’s no doubt that Sam Young is a good author, or at least, has some interesting stories, but it’s kinda like his thing to be some sort of an edgelord. I personally like his work, most of the time I don’t usually mind how dark and intense they can go, but it’s certain scenes like the SA that can really make me go ā€œwtf?!ā€ But I guess that’s what he wants anyway. :woman_shrugging:

This was my first time reading this.

Firstly, there were some typos, I unfortunately forgot to get some ss. I’ll do another playthrough and provide them here.

Secondly, the pacing was quite good, although I’m a bit iffy over this whole ordeal taking place over just a month and the Witch Hunters coming over on such short notice. One would expect, it would take atleast a couple months for them to make it to the village, no matter how punctual and diligent they are about their duty. Although, given the person Goro is, I’d expect him to be out prowling the landscape in search of victims to take out his frustrations on.

I loved the immersion. Begs the question how fleshed out the backlore is if you’re pushing out goblins and trolls and demons as well. The flavour of the story was quite enjoyable, the loss of hope paired with short-sighted humour and morbid circumstances put on a veil of mystique to a simple fantasy setting.

As for L, i find her reasoning to help the group quite…shallow. Surely, she’s been with Goro for some time now, seen atrocities far worse, and if you say, this was the breaking point for her, I’d have to say, was the situation so demanding enough that she decided, ā€œthis is it! I will not tolerate it any longerā€
Yes, loss of Yosif, the wrongful conviction of the group born of Goro’s evil nature and his usual narcissictic tendencies do paint quite a vivid potrait, i still find her alibi to be lacking enough.

My biggest gripe is with the romance. It seems you can romance any RO without the others giving a darn and if you’re romancing X in one scene and go after Y in the next, nobody bats an eye. That was quite immersion breaking for me. As for the romance itself, I tried out L and the doc. The doc’s backstory was a relationship-buildup material to use a foundation for the romance. But L’s was rushed i feel, given the current circumstances I’d expect her to be more on edge, than how casual she becomes in some scenes.

Also, for the stats, id suggest locking out some stats after a point of time which the players lag in, so that if the MC choose intimidation in one scene and uses empathy in the other, it doesn’t seem off-putting(for example I’ve been investing in intimidation but out of choice i had to choose an option during G’s talk with us in the holding cell and MC’s reaction felt like I’m playing a different person altogether). I would also say, the choices feel inconsequential, and I’d suggest stat passes and checks as well as the (required X stat to be Y amount) locked choice options you used.

I did like the morbid tone covered in occasional banter of the group and the emotion that G flares up in everybody. I do have to say, Yosif could be glorified a bit more to really make that loss drive home and give an emotional backlash. Perhaps a couple more childhood scenes and intimate sibling bonding scenes?

The choices don’t just feel inconsequential, they are inconsequential. People have code dived and state based choices lead to the same outcome as non state based choices. The game is basically linear.

Well, that seems anti-climatic. Why have a multiple choice based system then? Thanks for the heads upšŸ»

I know 100% I’m weird for this but I would like the choice to make it not one-sided or at the very least get a moment to think about it all because can you imagine that happening and not freaking out or having no one bring it up.

And same I was hoping for more pain or something because even if he did like us that way ( which I hope) he was still the only family we had and by the sounds of it the only person that ever really cared for us up to that point plus he died a horrible way right in front of us.

And I know for a fact it would kill a part of me to lose one of my siblings even to a natural
death so god knows what it would feel like to lose a sibling that raised you especially if you mix in finding out you’re not actually blood and that they love you in a not so sibling way.

I’m not saying I don’t like his work because I do like dark and intense stuff sometimes I do even look for it in-game, books etc all I’m trying to say is I think it’s wrong not to warn people just for the sake of shock value because you never know what could trigger someone and there is a lot of things in this game that could trigger someone.

I’m weird too because the option to not make it one sided (way down the road perhaps) is somewhat intriguing to me. It could even explain the MCs’ twisted obsession in learning necromancy to bring their ā€œbrotherā€ back. Endgame MC is clearly mentally unstable anyway.

See, now, call me a total weirdo cause personally… I love this game/story. Maybe it’s cause I absolutely love those grim dark, twisted, horrific stories and games but I was actually all for everything the story had to offer choice wise. I saw Necromancer in the title, remembered how the author tends to make his games and I crafted a mc born of insanity lol. But then again, I remember Sam from wayyyyyyyyyyyy back when all his games were here so I knew to expect a crazy dark storyline from the jump and acted accordingly. The ā€˜Goro Scene’ as I call it, I do remember was way more then a attempt in the original demo even if I can’t remember details(probably for the best tbh) but I actually had no idea the Yosif kiss WAS optional cause I got it every single time I played and now I’m actually curious as to what determines if it appears or not . I really didn’t have a problem with any of the scenes or choices cause, well, I expected em going in and also the promise of a sequel made me just go ā€˜oh, it’ll probably just be addressed in that then’. The game let me create a deeply deceptive, twisted in the head character and actually succeed with it while also hinting at being able to bring Yosif back, so I’m personally in love with the game! I will say tho, and maybe this is just me, but it kinda felt like Yosif was the intended ā€˜canon’ ro:
In the end all potential ros except maybe Lonnie all die and even if they don’t, I’m pretty sure none of them would want to still be around the mc after the Sacrifice and their romances didn’t feel all that serious either. They gave off the feel of 'I need you for XYZ so I’m gonna flirt" in my opinion.
It felt like the kiss with Yosif was him knowing he was gonna die in a few minutes, most likely in front of the mc(which he did) and wanting to not regret anything before he did such as admitting the mc and him weren’t exactly blood relatives.
This might just be my runs through the game but there’s actually a good amount of times were Yosif comes up in the mcs thoughts and contemplations to the point where he feels like the driving force and catalyst behind the mc getting the sorceror powers.
Idk, just what I think really, it could also just be that I really really liked Yosif as a character and how he fit in the story and in the mc’s life. I deadass liked him more than any of the ros and was real life mad that he was A, supposed to be the brother and B, was killed relatively early on. If that sequel really does get made I hope Sam brings him back as a ro cause it felt like Yosif was also the most developed of the characters second to the MC in my opinion.

That was way longer than I anticipated and for that I apologize, I didn’t mean for it to be that long lmfao
Also, this game 100% belongs in the Adult Readers Tag. I’m surprised and amazed it’s even still in the normal area of the forum to be completely honest but I am not complaining lmao

I can see how nothing would feel off if you’ve already imagined your character to be how he eventually becomes without any choice whatsoever in the matter. But if you’ve made choices towards the MC being a calm, diplomatic, and rational person, Ch14 and 15 are completely out of left field.

Yeah, I can understand that lmao. I also had prior context cause I’ve played Sam’s demos before so I also knew what to expect. He’s got a very distinct brand when it comes to games and from the three I’ve played by him it’s almost always insane, dark, horror with the mc developing into either a serial killer of some sort or a psychopath. In a way I kind of already knew exactly how the game would end lol

I’d be okay with it if there were any inkling that necromantic magic can cause you to go insane. But that was never mentioned. And your brother definitely isn’t insane.

True true, though I think it was more of the trauma then it was the specifically the magic in that regard. Cause ngl it was a very crazy small amount of time in which things went to hell in a handbasket and a lot of very very bad things happened in that short timespan. Buuuut I could be wrong cause I mean the way the magic was set up was that you had to kill the one you ā€˜love’ or care about the most just to get em in the first place so maybe they do actually drive the owner insane as a consequence. I will say tho that the reason Yosif didn’t seem to be insane from his may have been because he didn’t get the same type of magic. It seemed like the MC got Necromancy and Yosif got something completely different cause the MC also didn’t have Sickness as a option for a drawback, if memory serves me right MC could only choose Headaches, Chronic Thirst and something else that I can’t remember but I do know it wasn’t what Yosif had. Dunno tho

Na, you definitely still had plenty of options to be calm and rational until you got to Goro’s tower. A lot of time passed between your magic awakening and then.

Fr? Huh, it didn’t really feel like that to me but then again that may just be because I’m reading it as opposed to actually witnessing the time span lmao
It just felt like every crazy event happened in a short span of time, I was still reeling from the insanity of how the group leaves the village by the time the events of the ruins/sacrifice happened. That’s all me tho, I play it through kinda like a movie when I read. You’re def not wrong tho. From what I’ve seen and played, Sam’s games seem to push the mcs to turn crazy or commit heinous acts in a way similar to the anime Higurashi where it starts sweet then everyone slowly goes nuts. It’s certainly not for everyone in that respect lol

Which isn’t a bad thing btw, it’s nice to have a batshit insane story every now and then in my opinion

I like the story can’t wait for more although when will we get our power? I played through it and has gotten nothing so far

It seems like the rewrite has started now. It used to be 15 chapters, now it’s only 10.
