The Lonely Shore [WIP] (333k words) (updated April 13)

Good to hear but don’t rush it to meet the deadline. I voted photographer but the other jobs also good ones as well. Could go either way for the winner

I’m so excited!! I tried to like your post but I’ve hit my daily limit :smiling_face_with_tear: Whichever job you end up using, I’m excited about the addition.

@Christopher_Bull @levviathan Thank you both so much!! I’m very excited about the new jobs, as well. And no worries–I’m taking care of myself! I’m looking at a Sunday or Monday release, and I’m very eager to get it done haha

CHAPTER TWO UPDATE:

  • Added Wordcount: 88,325 ( 225,095 total)
  • New content warnings can be found here
  • Saves will likely break, so as always I suggest starting fresh!
  • In this update you can choose to spend time with Ravi, Jay, Yasmin, or Beck. After playing through one of those scenes, you get to sit down with Ravi & Jay & the doctor and finally get some answers. And after that, you get a chance to go on a little adventure…

Wow…the update was really intense (in a good way) and I love it. Can’t wait to see more of this!

About Job can something like medical profession be added, not strictly a doctor of course, like a nurse, animal vets, first responder, emergency staff, etc.

I’ve been offline for a while so I’m delighted to come back to an update, and there seems to have been some tweaking of the previous chapter.

I loved it, loved seeing some more of this strange town and its people. And finding out the answers to some of the questions we’ve been wondering since we woke up here.

Great update.

Man, I’ve been reading these updates every time they come out but the story just keeps getting better and better! And the ending where we get to see the first hint of our distinctive magic? Omg chef’s kiss! I simply cannot wait yet I have no choice but to

Side note: Bruh my heart is breaking over Willow! I love how “Gotta find my baby sis” can be the only thing on our mind. It’s a super realistic reaction.

@Knoez Thank you so much! Intense was definitely what I was going for haha. I’m glad you enjoyed ^.^

@Cryzhentia Thanks for the suggestion!! Unfortunately, medical is one career type I don’t think I’ll be able to add as an option…mostly because I don’t want MC to have skills beyond basic first aid. More than anything it’s to keep branching reasonable on my end. Apologies!

@CelticWolfCub I’m glad the update was here when you came back! And glad you enjoyed it c: Showing off the town and the citizens was one of my big goals for the chapter…and writing the scene where MC finally gets some answers was sooo much fun.Tysm~

@Facepalmcity Awww thank you!! Writing out the little taste of the magic styles was one of my favorite parts of the update fr. It made me so incredibly hyped to dig deeper into the magic as the story goes on. And I’m glad things with Willow resonate! As a big sibling myself I definitely feel like it’d be my main priority, haha, so I wanted to make sure to include the option for that to be true for the MC, as well.

Ok, so for me this has progressed from “good” to “really very gripping”. The writing is quite captivating, even if most of the characters are sus (which is likely intentional, we’re still getting drawn in to the mystery). I only trust jay, and barely.

I think bluntly telling Perri ghosts aren’t real in the library ends up decreasing skeptic for some reason?

@MadAdam Oh, thank you so much!! That’s so good to hear. It’s definitely intentional haha–trusting no one is a fairly smart move in Easthaven.

@Raptorofwar That definitely shouldn’t be the case haha. I’ll take a peek under the hood when I get the chance and get that fixed, thanks for letting me know!

Couple notes I have from replaying.

  1. For the podcast job, wouldn’t something more supernatural related, like a podcast about like horror or cryptids or something make more sense than true crime for a job that raises the weird stat.
Cause like sure true crime is adjacent to like horror and cryptid stuff, especially when it comes to audience overlap, but true crime itself generally doesn’t deal with the supernatural.

  2. These two sections feel a bit out of order

There are only three logos on the desktop…and none of them are familiar. You’d really hoped for a chance to get online.

You hover over the icons, more curious than anything else. One is an open book…

Like the first part feels like the MC just kinda skips a step, jumping to the conclusion they can’t access the internet, without checking whether the any of the icons are an unfamiliar browser (or if there’s some other way to find a browser, like a search bar or file explorer). Then they do check what the programs are, but only after coming to the conclusion. I feel like it would make more sense as something along the lines of…

There are only three logos on the desktop…and none of them are familiar. You hover over the icons. One is an open book… …labeled ‘GAME ZONE!!’. There also doesn’t seem to be any other way to easily access a browser. You’d really hoped for a chance to get online.

  1. Just some typos I found

Pretty sure the highlighted word should be hand there

@shadowfire101 Thank you so much for the feedback!!

As to your first point, you’re totally right in that something directly related to the supernatural would fall more under the weird label. I went with true crime because it felt a little more accessible to more types of MCs and, more importantly, I didn’t want it to be essentially identical to what Perri does. You make a good point, though!! I’ll give it some more thought.

And you’re totally right-- the order feels off there. I’ll go back and tweak that.

Thank you again for your thoughts, and also the typos!! It’s always super helpful c:

I’m actually that person who was grateful to have a non-supernatural podcast, since I’ve made a weird, but skeptic MC (yes I like contradictory characters). It’s fine if you decide to change it to a supernatural one ofc, just wanted to say that personally I appreciated the thought =)

This is so well-written. I loved playing an MC who has strong intuition because it seems to fit so well with the theme of the story so far. The town’s almost like Nightvale, except it’s next to a river and it has this somber atmosphere, and the descriptions of it practically screams that the whole place is cut off from the rest of the world. The pacing is also good in my opinion. The intuition thing really helped my MC make sense of the Silent-Hill-esque-weird-fog-that-will-kill-you-anomaly.

@Vasya_Khleb Thank you so much for your feedback!! I’m glad that the option was able to fit your character–I was definitely trying to keep in mind MCs like yours c:

@Ashi Ahhh thank you so much for your kind words!! I’m glad you’re enjoying the story and my writing. Yeah, I really enjoy the intuition as a way to make the MC feel a little more…settled in the world, I suppose? And I’m glad the pacing feels good!! That’s definitely one of those things that’s harder to see on my end haha.

Your writing is quite vivid! I think you could take this even further if you were to transition this into a standalone novel when this CoG is done, one of the reasons being that this premise is hook material.

Your writing here definitely gave me a lot of pointers and ideas for how I can improve the horror novel I’m personally working on! Well done so far
