You forgot Hallowford
To think that the main conflict of this game was all because Milius Black-Clad spent all of his money on dye and, as a consequence, could not afford a steed.
Thats better
What’s your guy’s favorite combo to play? I like having high willpower and charisma. Do y’all buy the armor and weapons or save your money?
Usually, I play a bard-wizard - start full bard, and apprentice with Isan, end up 2-6-2-6. As for buying stuff, I mostly buy morale, and wait until Game 2 to buy armor. (Sword? I’m a wizard, Harry! #staff4lyfe)
I enjoy playing a bard-knight, focused on pragmatism and order (6-2-2-6). Being a good apprentice and careful decision-making allowed me to reliably gain good armor at little to no cost, as well as save a decent sum of money. In tighter spots, buying morale usually gave me the boost to pull through the more perilous situations.
I think my stats are 5-5-2-3. I also like keeping the staff! My main mc keeps the Book of whispers id really like for them to keep the heart as well.
So ive been playing on steam and i got every achievement but the phat loot one wont work. Ive been a bard and went to entertain in the taverns all 3 times but its not working.
The first time you entertain in the tavern you can’t have a mentor.
You sir are the best around.
after “finishing” the hero of kendrickstone - and by finish, i mean dying and game over - the story was determined to make me fail at any and all junction.
no matter what choice i selected, it was bad, to the point that i eventually died and game over
One of the issues with the game is that if you make a certain combination of decisions you can end up at a significant disadvantage throughout the story.
For example, if you dreamed of being a wizard but didn’t pick the wizard background and then fail to apprentice with Isan, you have shot yourself in the foot. Because your points are in Willpower but you don’t actually know any magic.
I would suggest trying again while experimenting with different builds. Also take a mentor; that makes the game’s economy significantly easier because they give you free housing.
Mildred will offer to make you her squire if you’re able to hold your own against the bandits, otherwise she offers you a position as a servant/soldier. Being her squire or servant boosts your Prowess by 1 between each mission.
William always offers you a job, though the attribute increases he offers only kick in after the first mission. After that he boosts your Subterfuge by 1 between each mission, and he can offer you an additional reward at the end of the game which boosts it 1 more.
Isan will make you his apprentice if you have high Willpower (while knowing magic) or have high eloquence. Being his apprentice will boost your Willpower by 1 between each mission. Otherwise he can make you his servant. Being his servant does not provide much in the way of attribute increases, it only expands your lore knowledge. Unless you already start out with at least 5 in an Attribute, I would not suggest being Isan’s servant.
You can get attribute increases while you are mentorless but only if you pick a job suited to a skill you have less than 5 in. This will improve that attribute but the tradeoff is you get less money and less renown.
IMO, the ‘most powerful possible combo’ is going full bard in the opening, then becoming Isan’s apprentice.
Bard actually synergizes very well with every mentor.
I find Bard > Squire > Knight to be the most satisfying, in my opinion.
I agree Bard/Wizard can do basically whatever you want them to.
Rogue/Wizard could be a dark horse combo, as they can get the Heart from Mindy without pissing off everyone in Hallowford, and also have the skills to do something with it.
Rogue/Wizard is hard to do well, though (though it’s a pretty awesome option for the unmentored…or those unmentored who don’t wanna stay unmentored).
OTOH, Squire → Rogue is a pretty boss combo.
Definitely, I wouldn’t recommend it to people unless you want to code-read everything beforhand and preplan every decision.
It’s not too difficult.
Start with 5 Willpower as a mage, and then go work for William.
William is the Subterfuge Mentor and while his training does start later than most, he does also continue training you after Isan’s scouting mission. No other mentor does this. Just make sure to refuse his offer to make you an Associate, because your training stops if you become one.
This plus his boots will bring you up to 6 Subterfuge by the end of the game. Meanwhile after Isan’s mission you should ask him to reward you with a ring and pick the Ring of the Scholar. This allows you to end the game with 6 Willpower, 6 Subterfuge, 1 Peace Magic, and 1 Battle Magic.
Early on in Cryptkeepers you can then join the adventurers discussing magic and iirc that should boost your Battle Magic and Peace Magic stats by 1.
Here’s an even more tuned version for pure stats:
Go unmentored as a 5WP mage. Pick up the book of magic while working as a PI. Then join William’s organization after the second mission while getting the Ring of the Scholar.
You’ll end up with 6/7 W/S, and 2 of each magic. (Or you could get the Book of Mad Whispers instead of the boots.)
