I didn’t really get the sense that Mopsie was manipulative, except to the extent that she very much wants something that’s beyond her grasp, and is using all of the limited tools at her disposal to get it. She comes across as very immature, and quite sheltered… but also rather endearing and with a “good heart” (as evidenced by her letter in the postscript). It also sounds as though she’s fallen in love for the first time, and I can remember enough of what that feels like to have a certain degree of sympathy for her.
I found myself agreeing with Aunt Primrose’s assessment of Figs: the guy’s a total waste of space. Mopsie appears poised on the brink of a very bad decision, obsessed with someone who’s unlikely to make her happy once their initial infatuation wears off. In a society without easy access to divorce, that’s going to have consequences that she doesn’t seem to have thought through.
Congratulations are definitely in order to @Gower for the strength of their characterisation (and not least for Valentine, who is also excellent). I can’t remember the last time I was this invested in the characters in a story… although I’d like to petition for more opportunities to destroy Figs.
I love the characters in this game so much, especially Haze and Haze’s meta ways, and Valentine, whose path is hilarious and who can be awfully fun.
I didn’t much care for Figs or Mopsie at first, nor did I particularly want to help them. I did lend them a hand in one play-through for Rory’s sake, though. And after seeing how well things seemed to have worked out for them, and how sweet they were together in one of my epilogues, I changed my mind.
Figs is a bit maddening, certainly, but not without redeeming qualities I think. Though, my opinion might be a little skewed because of being familiar with some of the characters Figs and Mopsie were likely in part based upon. I did think their happy ending made a nice lot with some of the more conventionally happy-ending or romantic epilogues.
Oh, and has anyone worked out how to make sure Hazel is brought to justice for the thefts?
In my last playthrough, I stopped the burglary and recovered the loot… but the inspector still falsely accused Valentine. One of the other characters referred to clearing Valentine’s name by identifying the real thief after I had her released from jail… but I didn’t seem to have the opportunity to do it.
Open up a reply or new post, and click the gear. You should bring up the template for the spoiler tag, which is [spoiler][/ spoiler] without the space after the slash there. Type in that.
I think if you choose to search the mansion during the hunt you can search haze’s room and found some evidence you can use later. After that you can go to inspector’s room and change the evidence so it’ll show haze as main suspect. I haven’t tried to bring haze to justice tho.
(he’s so damn charming i can’t help but ended romancing him everytime)
Also, this maybe kinda out of place but @Gower did you plan to make another game? Your cog is wonderful and i love your character development. Your game is one of my favorite of this year!!
I actually sent in some pitches several days ago to CoG! I’m trying to work on some scholarly stuff about Renaissance poetry, but I’m hoping to try to write another game, too. It won’t be a 2018 release, though–I’m going to have to take it slowly, because I want my next game to be as long as this one.
But yes, I definitely will be writing another game.
@Gower Kudos to you!! I’ve read your interview in cog’s web. Man, i also definitely will wait for your next game. Being able to balancing your work as college professor and writer of cog games is really amazing. Also more question : is the artist who drew midnight summer’s art cover is the same with the one who draw tally ho? Can i have a link to their social media? (Like deviantart/pixiv/patreon)
Yes! Nilah Magruder did both covers. She is so amazing that I will gush about her given the least opportunity. Here are some links about her. I’m hoping she’ll do the cover for my next game too–but that’s far in the future!
I’ve succeeded in seeing hazel arrested. I’m not entirely certain, but you need high skullduggery, and possibly high intelligence thoe that may not be a necessity.
This is so when you alter the Ambrose’s web of string it is subtle enough that he doesn’t realize it. I vaguely remember it mentioning intelligence one of the times I did this but I can’t be certain it’s the play through Hazel was arrested.
I also avoided being caught sneaking into the rooms. I’m fairly certain I didn’t search Hazel’s room. I am not sure of the exact threshold, but by the end of Ambrose’s accusations I had more than fifty but less than sixty suspicion.
You need sufficient suspicion for Ambrose to justify arresting you as part of a ruse to catch hazel, but too much could result in him considering you genuinely guilty.
A small clue: Your choice of activities during the foxhunt and overnight may help you here as much as what you choose to do during the harvest festival.
So far I was able to: help Val set up – not perfect but good enough, iirc it wasn’t a failed check – and was able to dance the lindy hop with him properly. As for the boat race, I was able to get the execs to notice – one of them said to call? Should I have perfected the table thing? Or should I keep Val from being suspected of being a thief – although I was able to bail him out
When the night come there’s a choice to either help Regina in the mission, help rory and mopsie also there’s a choice to not help any of them. Choose to not help anyone and there’ll be an event with valentine.
How does one persuade Haze to give up a life of crime and take her to see the psychoanalyst? I’m having a devil of a time trying to achieve that outcome.
I must say, being an avid Jeeves and Wooster, Agatha Christie and Downton Abbey fan, this game is just the ticket, what what? Absolutely ripping game on dear old C of G.
Is anyone else having trouble actually getting any use out of the Skulduggery skill? By the time I get to the train station gift shop, I have a 42 rating, which is supposedly above average, yet I fail to steal the champagne glass, fail to sneak into first class, and fail to steal the hairstick from the Colonel.
I gather it has something to do with not being stealthy enough, but I’m not sure how to fix that.
