In general colour wasn’t as important as the symbols themselves when it came to clan heraldry in the Sengoku period. The red Mori colour comes from the various banners that a lot of the Mori used, especially after Motonari, and it was depicted as red and not orange. Interestingly enough, Mori Motonari himself used a black and white banner.
Your project, “Tale of Two Princes,” promises an immersive journey through Japan’s Sengoku Period. Seeking feedback on language, tone, accuracy, and plot, your dedication despite military service is commendable. Best wishes for your writing endeavors!
Alright that’s kinda interesting I was just curious
Sorry for the late reply, your question got me interested and I spent a bit of time looking into it.
By the inner palace system, I’m assuming you mean the Imperial Chinese system of ranking concubines?
If so, being inspired by systems like that wouldn’t be out of place, the Japanese already had concubines and a more courtly Daimyo might see it fit to start organizing things and being inspired to make everything more regal. That said, it was still a period defined by near-constant conflict; historically, during peacetime, those developments happened the most. I wouldn’t count it out but, at least for the early chapters, I will mostly focus on warfare. We’ll see if we reach a point of stature where more grandiose things like that become more relevant.
Regarding horse archery, interestingly enough the Japanese already had horse archers. In fact, during the Kamakura period, that was the main role of the samurai. It switched to more of a combat leadership role when the military began to revolve more around large armies made up of professional soldiers rather than just a few samurai on horseback. I could totally see a high riding and high archery MC create an elite band of horse archer samurai, though. It might shake warfare up a bit for the more spear-oriented warlords around you
Also what of marriage and concubines?
Either way a daimyo needs an heir.
Repeating what I answered in your PM for the public, the way I’ll likely do it is to make the wife the RO and then concubines purely political, serving to produce an heir.
I figured on repeating the question here for everyone else’s benefit.
Yes, alongside all the ministers and magistrates having different access, ranks and permissions within the ‘palaces’ themselves.
Yeah, I tried to mostly mention stuff Japan already had in some form and that we could then expand upon using foreign ideas from other cultures.
Obviously, that’s why I said ‘depending on how high we can climb’, we sure won’t be making any grand palace reform while knee deep into battle.
Yup and using Mongolian inspiration is just the kind of excuse you need to bring back horse-archery focused tactics and dedicated regiment. Obviously modified to still be effective in the new context of war.
could you be a average or above average in one skill and a master on one or would you just have to be a master spearman, but suck at archery and swordmenship
Aye, I honestly think these sound like pretty good ideas. I’ll keep them in mind for later parts of the book, consider yourself noted
You could be decent in other areas, I’m not intending the game to be a min-max stat-focused game, more so that you’re rewarded for specializing more in one area.
okay i just wanted mounted archers but also to be as good with a spear as zi bai (earl Shi) from kingdom
Will the spear stat just be for a spear or will it be for a glave or with be the equivalent of sword and spear or will there not be glaves
Glad I could help!
No plans currently to have the MC be able to use glaives. Glaives (naginata) fell into disuse in field combat during the muromachi (sengoku) period due to combat shifting more to tight, organized formations which the sweeping motions required for the naginata didn’t allow. The naginata didn’t disappear entirely but throughout the period it switched to more of a status symbol and a home defense weapon, often being the preferred weapon for the female warriors as well as the wives of samurai. I won’t disclude it being used by others, like the RO, but I’m not considering it for the MC at the moment.
Sorry, I don’t know who that is. My knowledge of Chinese spearmen is limited to Lü Bu
The secret, forgotten samurai art of teppokyu-jutsu…
DEV LOG #1
Been making steady progress on update 2, tons of content added to chapter 1, mostly more insight into characters who are pivotal in chapter 2 as well as some more historical accuracy. Chapter one is probably gonna end up at around 13000 words.
Been really sick these last few days, fever and vomiting, so writing has been a bit slower than I’d have liked. Hoping to get better soon so I can get back to my usual pace
That’s most of what I have to add, heading back to the military after my Christmas vacation soon so I might be slower to respond.
Take care y’all and don’t get sick, it really sucks!
Are we the older twin or the younger twin?
Alright thought I’d check and I imagine that the sword skill also works for the dagger I think it’s called santo or shanto If you implement them
