Surviving High School: Freshman Year (WIP)

It’s like the sims e-e.

Ah high school. Let’s give it a shot. Ten seconds later

“H-hi.” Is immediately the shy kid. Reading and hanging out in the library.

I’d definitely check out the demo when it’s available. I’m a sucker for realistic games.

XD yeah! But at least in the sims you could control how fast their relationships progress.

Hopefully this goes better than the real highschool experience.

This looks like a pretty awesome idea!
It would be really interesting to see what high school in an American school system would be like (I’m assuming this is about an American school cause of “Freshman” etc? Correct me if I’m wrong :P) since I went to school using a different system!
Can’t wait to see what you do with it

I’ve always liked High School Stories. It seems so different from my own experiences here in Germany. (And a lot more scary if TV is to be believed.)

Actually I once had someone tell me about the Germany school system, certainly seems very different. Something about choosing from two levels of education around high school and very little extracurricular activities.

But, hey, it’s all good TV is almost never to be believed! High school sitcom tv is outrageously hilarious.

A suggestion a friend has already made to me was to add more options for gender, such as both or neither. Any suggestions or comments on my idea is all appreciated!
Do you plan on having a hidden stat for sexual preference?

Such as (if character is female):

*choice
    #I like boys!
        *set sex_pref "straight"
        *goto blahblah
    #I like girls!
        *set sex_pref "gay"
        *goto blahblah
#I like both boys and girls!
        *set sex_pref "bi"
        *goto blahblah
    #I'm not interested in sex.
        *set sex_pref "asexual"
        *goto blahblah

To be honest, unless OP is planning on making the love interests genderless, there’s really not much of a point to asking about sexuality. That can be determined through the player’s choices instead when interacting with NPCs.

Yeah, basically you go to elementary school from 6 to 10 and then your grades determine what school you visit after that. There’s the ‘Hauptschule’ (for those with not so good grades), the ‘Realschule’ (for those with grades somewhere in the middle) and the ‘Gymnasium’ (for those with good grades). (There’s also a ‘Gesamtschule’ in a few parts of the country, which unifies Realschule and Gymnasium, but I don’t have any experiences with that.)
The school you visit determines whether you can apply to university or not. (There’s the ‘Quali’ after you finish Hauptschule, the ‘mittlere Reife’ for Realschule and after tenth grade in Gymnasium or the ‘Abitur’ after 8 years in Gymnasium.)

…I think it sounds way more complicated than it is.
And to be honest, no matter how many times I read about the American High School system, I just don’t get it. There’s this big gap between American education and German education and it’s just so confusing.

Anyway, rant over.

I could understand that. I feel the same way with other cultures!

I would agree, unless the OP planned on making any characters that switched with sexuality/gender.

I am really excited about this! It sounds amazing, all the options and stuff

ahem I can confirm that being anything other than straight would change your life quite significantly, not as how you are but how others react to you,say that for example you are gay, yeah you can flirt with same gendered only,or choose to do that, yah. But how your parents react in-game,or your friends for that matter? Yeah,if this is realistic then there should be a choice,or it can like be affected by whom you flirt with? That wouldn’t work actually,xD. Say IRL,I don’t go flirtin’ with everyone of my preferred gender,so the easiest thing would be maybe to have a choice so it wouln’t depend on who you flirt with. i dunno tho xD

The only reason why I say that (and no concern here, I’m asexual myself :p) is that high school is a time of experimentation. Not many people are very sure what sexuality they are. Having it as an organic stat rather than a set one at the very beginning might be more effective storywise.

It only really changes your life if you are open about it, and there are several people I remember back in high school who had a very fluid identity regarding sexuality.

Maybe creating it as a stat for how others perceive you socially and then letting the player decide for themselves over the course of the game would be more natural? All up to OP in the end of course

It’s always nice to see a realistic game here. Just an everyday high school, no magic, demons, vampires, etc. I’ll definitely be following and looking forward to the demo!

I don’t know, I’d assume just because you HAVE the hidden stat doesn’t mean you can’t flirt with everyone. For instance, if I’m straight and have the hidden stat sex_pref “straight” that idea to later say I’m gay or bi shouldn’t be greyed out.

Maybe something changed, maybe I’m learning who I am. There’s always the option for something like:

"Well, you know I like women right?" she asks you.
*choice
    #(lie) "I like women too."
        *goto blah
    #"I like women too."
        *set sex_pref "bi"
        *goto blah
#"Not me. I just don't see how you could."
        *goto blah
#"I didn't know that about you."
        *goto blah

Or, more complex way, like this:

"Well, you know I like women right?" she asks you.
*choice
    #"I like women too."
        *if (sex_pref = "straight")
            *goto blee
        *else
            *goto blah
#"Not me. I just don't see how you could."
        *goto blah
#"I didn't know that about you."
        *goto blah

*label blee
Why did you say this?
*choice
    #I've been noticing women lately.
        *set sex_pref "gay"
        *goto blah
#I've been noticing both men and women lately.
        *set sex_pref "bi"
        *goto blah
#I'm oddly attracted to Amber, although I've never been attracted to a woman before.
        *set ambercrush true
        *goto blah
#I just don't want Amber feeling awkward.
        *set conformist %+10
        *set individual %-10
        *set kind %+10
        *set mean %-10
        *goto blah
#I'm lying to gain Amber's trust.
        *set manipulative %+10
        *set straightforward %-10
        *goto blah

I mean, sexuality is a pretty complex thing, as I understand. Personally I can see having a stat and not having one both as viable options. Without one the reader will kinda just think on their own “this is what I see happening” with one the story can keep track of the player and act accordingly, but it’s a little hard and more for flavor.

@Cupcake outta do what she feels comfortable with and thinks would best fit her story.

TL;DR Either way works, the coding isn’t a statement on sexuality, just the complexity of the game.

When would sex_prefer = X ever actually come up, though? As in, would that - independently of whether you actually are dating/attempting to date anyone, and thus visible as (whatever inclination) - ever change what happens to your character?

While everyone else in school is arguing/conversing over sexuality and stats. I’m just chilling in the library with my books
