Stars Arisen Developer Diary

Coming up on release very soon! (FWIW it may not be the exact date currently listed on the Upcoming COG Games thread, but it should be very close to that. Nothing’s wrong, just some stuff shifting around behind the scenes.) I was looking back at my very earliest development notes for the game, which are interesting in terms of what was set from the start and what wasn’t. As example, here’s a list I had of very vague possible character ideas after coming up with the basic initial plot idea:

Scattered thoughts on this:

  • The PC is described as the Sorceress’s “ward” because my very earliest conception of the game had you as her magical apprentice who went into hiding with her, not her kid. I was already going back and forth about that from the start, though, which is probably why she’s also still called your mom here. That whole storyline is also why “some kind of connection to your family” is a separate item on the list.
  • Vivian and the Sorceress were definitely the first characters I had any actual strong sense of, to the point of Vivian being the only person on here with an actual name. The only thing I’m not sure about is why he’s described as a “rebel ghost” specifically. I guess stealing the Stars (which is an idea I had at this point, from elsewhere in the doc) is kind of inherently rebellious, but it’s not really the main thing about him.
  • “Rogue wizards” is pretty much always how the Grim Reminders are described on this document until I came up with the name.
  • From the “child of rebels” line that pretty clearly became Em, it seems like my original conception was that they were being pushed into following their parents into politics? Not exactly the direction things went in.
  • The only things on here that don’t have clear connections to characters in the actual game are “some kind of magical star spirit” (which is not in fact a thing, lol) and “weird doctor of some kind who hangs out with the rebels.” I don’t know what that second one means. Who were you, Weird Doctor? Where did you go? Why did I abandon you?

Clearly the weird doctor became Viv the dog. He’s a mental health professional.
I’m sad we didn’t get a magical star spirit, Mass Effect style. I guess the stars can be said to have some personality traits, mainly “intimidating” haha.

Family certainly is a present theme across the entire game, so I’d say you got that bullet point covered. Parental (figure) issues for everyone!

I appreciate that one of the first things decided about Vivian was that he would be romanceable

While the enthusiasm is 100% well-placed, they updated the release schedule a couple days ago, and this won’t actually be out until next week - on Wednesday for some reason, if I remember correctly.

Yep, it’s next week - we had to shift some things around.

Once the game is released, you can play it and find out! :grinning:

Where is the demo?

It’ll probably be out on Monday.

I didn’t asked that…I asked for a demo, not the release date

The demo is what will be out on Monday. The game will be out on Wednesday.

If you’re wondering about the demo that used to be up on Dashingdon, I took it down when the game went into beta testing.
