@AdamGoodtime Race doesn’t mean country of birth. There is no term for country of birth. There are terms for your genetic background (race or ethnicity), how you were raised (culture), and your citizenship (nationality). This is because those are the things that people have cared about for thousands of years for the purposes of racism, classism, nationalism, and just general prejudice against that which is perceived as “the other”.
@WulfyK And as I said, the only reason Native Americans need that identifier is because Europeans came and killed most of them and took all their shit. That’s why you don’t call Japanese people “Native Japanese”. Because no body killed most of them and took all their shit. It’s not exactly the same, but it’s similarly why Hawaiians are often called Native Hawaiians. Because a bunch of rich US citizens orchestrated a coup with the support of the US soldiers currently stationed there in order to have the US illegally anex their country and take all their shit.
…well no I think we should probably just shut this argument down.
I meant to describe Morimoto’s nationality, not race, though I should have specified more clearly.
You said American is not a race? Well neither is Japanese. So there’s no argument.
Japanese is a nationality, not a race. Sorry. It’s a culture and a nationality. Is “black” a nationality? No, it’s a race. There’s no country named black, and no singular “black” culture. But there’s a continent named Africa.
If I wanted to state his race I would have used half-Asian, half-Caucasian, but I decided to use half-Japanese, half-American, which is a true statement, and coincidentally happens to give a decent mental image of his appearance.
Really good and hope for more updates keep up the good work. Kind of reminds me of SAO Sword Art Online if you’ve seen the anime or read the manga. You’ll know what I’m talking about it’s a VRMMORPG in the game where the protagonist is stuck in there and people that die really do die because the head system they are wearing will overheat like a microwave and because it’s on your head it will cause death. And the protagonist kind of feels like the NPC’s aren’t really like NPC’s they are real people feel like real people.
@jcsunshine_3 Thanks! Actually yeah, I’ve seen it, and i talked about it in the post right after my first one It’s a pretty good show, haven’t read it though. As I said, I’m not a fan of anime or manga but it’s one of the ones that I like.
@Shoelip It really doesn’t matter what the exact definition of race is. Describing someone’s race by the country they are from is almost always wrong.
There is no “Africa” country. There is no “Europe” country. There is no “Asia” country. Yet you can be African, European, or Asian. You can be Pacific Islander, you can be Native American (unrelated to America the country, but rather the Americas as a whole. The continents were named America in the 15th century, which is about as recent a name as any other continent.) You can be an Aboriginal Australian, or Caucasian (most would say European), Middle-Eastern, and maybe a few others.
The genetic history of humans on Earth isn’t that diverse, unfortunately, that we can define race by a difference of a few hundred geographical miles (China and Japan, for example.) Koreans might look different from Chinese, but they are still “Asian.” You can think of other examples.
I’m not saying that all Asian people look the same, or all people of African heritage, or anything like that. I know Germans do not look like Italians, but there’s typically not an “Italian” checkbox when you’re applying for a job.
@CitizenShawn I’d say the lack of detail when it comes to European races on forms has a lot to do with the fact that Europeans have dominated practically everywhere in the entire world at one point or another. They are just “White” because they were the great white blob of doom that swept up all other cultures in their path in the name of God, Imperialism and the “white man’s burden”. Every other people had to cling desperately to their identity to keep it from being swept up in the wave of whiteness, but white people have never really had their cultural or racial identities seriously threatened. So even now when European culture isn’t exactly pushing itself onto people under threat of death it’s kinda already damage done.
I gotcha. Yeah, European culture is pretty dominant worldwide, especially after British Imperialism and American “cultural imperialism.” It’s one of the reasons China only imports 10 American movies per year and restricts the internet. Yet you could go to a prominent Chinese city and still see many American-tailored businesses, if only in the name of tourism.
Culture exchange does go both ways, but yeah Europeans have a tendency to expand a little past their welcome.
UPDATE: Just updating the game a little. I fixed several of the issues with “Undeclared” genders and disguise issues with Cory, and added some Aurelius “intimidation” but you have to be mostly brutal and threaten him to see it. I haven’t had a lot of time to write more story, but I’ll work on it a little bit more tonight.
Edit: The time I uploaded it is 3:30AM, so if you didn’t load the page after that, then you have the old version.
This forum’s support might actually be what I needed to finish a project all along. I have 50+ started stories on my computer, and it’s really annoying to not have the confidence to finish them!
This game is really interesting and fun! But…I don’t know. The combat is sort of killing it for me. The game is definitely great, but I just spam the ‘attack’ button on the combat situations, since it basically says the same thing over and over until the enemy is defeated.
Is there a chance to meet the other alpha testers in real life? Cause you know it would be reallllyy awkward if you romance some one, and it turns out that they are the same gender if your character was straight. Or opposite gender if you’re gay.
@Xhandas I’ll try to finish it sometime soon! I got distracted last week with another idea and now I’m beta-testing the new CoG game, but I’ll have more soon. Glad you like it!
@ChimeraLord Yeah I plan to add some more classes as it goes on, but the class doesn’t really matter as much as your stats.
@Quan499 Combat was meant to be a little bit like a game, but there are different descriptions for what Flurry does after you attack each time. Sometimes your ally will attempt to block his blade, sometimes he will try to feint and you can dodge if you’re fast enough, etc. I know what you mean though.
I am thinking about eliminating the whole turn-based style and just make the battles narrative, with a few key decisions. Perhaps it will calculate multiple attacks based on your weapon damage, but you don’t have to physically say “attack” each turn. I think that would be best for a CoG-style game.
@Ninja6398 Yes, there will be an opportunity to meet the other testers in real life. Yes, there may be a few “liars” about their real life gender/other attributes. Yes, it could get awkward. But you’ll find out that a higher honesty will reward you when trying to romance a player in real-life.
Yes, sorry for not explaining it a bit better. I quickly ran back through the game, and as you said, your partner does do a few things. But yes, in an immersive type of environment such as CoG, I do believe narrative is the way to go. Everything else is fine! The combat is just what I usually love the most, only second to the actual plot, in CoG-style games, so I wanted to share my opinion on that.
