Sordwin by Thom Baylay

Not real clear about imperals, but 5 foot and a half is considered short?

It’s understandable some might think that 5 and a half is short. I do know most European and Westerners are 5’8 and up.

That only applies to a situation where you have romantic feelings for him/her though so that explanation/scenario doesn’t really matter to an MC who sees him/her as the expendable pawn who is doing the will of a potential enemy/benefactor(like my MC.) In that situation it would just be a random thing to say and would make me say “WTF !? I don’t even care about how we feel about each other nor am I morally inclined to save you, if you’re endangered. Just help me get the damn package and we can go our separate ways.” So, while that’s a good explanation for his behavior to an MC who has romantic feelings, it doesn’t seem applicable to an MC who can’t stand him/her and sees them as a arrogant, boastful enforcer to the lord who is coercing them to work for them. If anything it just reinforces that idea.

Neutral evil doesn’t have to do with feeling obligated to do your job or completing your mission/task that’s more of a lawful thing so it didn’t matter if it wasn’t in their job description to do that. What matters is that they recognize the usefulness of working within a set of rules if it serves their own interests and being adaptable and willing to work with whomever can help them complete their goals.

I see. Just ran the conversions (which is honestly something I should’ve have done in the first place, really), and 5 foot and half is 167cm, which is above average for Oriana and slightly below average for Orion here where I’m from.

They’re both tall compared to my 5’1 self, though

Wait, shouldn’t it be around 150~ cm? :speak_no_evil:

Five and a half feet = 5’6 = ~167cm

Five feet and a half inch = 5’½ = ~153cm

I double-checked, Ori was introduced with the first description in the prologue.

All this talk about heights made me curious about Ori’s (and Winter’s too, I suppose) age though. We knew about all other major characters’ thanks to dialogue (for Ruby) and a book (for the rest), but those two are still a mystery.

Some Questions for discussion:

  1. Who were your favorite to least favorite of the 3 characters: Ruby, Winter and Orion/Oriana ? and why are they your favorite or least favorite ?

  2. What’re some things you want to do in episode 3 that you couldn’t do in the previous installment ? Yes this includes doing stuff with your RO.

That’s what sequels can be used for…

My favourite, without a doubt, is Winter. It’s a fun change to play the sort of character who’d measure up to them, not an aspiring hero who feels obligated to pick the ‘nice’ options. My MC decided to stay and kill the hooded lanterns, not because he gave much of a damn about Sordwin, but because it stung his pride to run from a fight he could probably win (and then he fried Jewel with lightning and zero remorse). Now he’s annoyed that Winter underestimated him, and wants to show off until they’re genuinely impressed. So yeah, it’s fun to play a jerk like that.

It’s hard to guess how a romance with Winter would develop - clearly Genuine Romance is not on their radar, so maybe they’re not even capable of that, and it’ll be a ‘two shady people who can’t tolerate anyone but each other’ sort of deal. Or maybe they will catch feelings, and realise there’s one person in the world they can actually trust. Or maybe they’ll catch feelings, freak out, and decide it’s best to try and kill off the complication? Lots of possibilities, but however things go, you can guarantee it won’t be boring.

(As a sidenote, I laughed when I saw that the code for their romance achievement is simply ‘oops’)

I liked Orion well enough, and appreciated his distant attitude - it made him seem more professional and focused. He did what was necessary, without any messing around (and uh, that’s more than my characters usually did). I didn’t dislike Ruby either, though it’s fair to say I found her the least intriguing of the three (and obviously she now hates the guts of my Winter-chasing MC).

For Book 3, I guess the big question would be ‘what was that special powerful light thingy that saved us at the end of Sordwin’? Are we going to discover more about it, and perhaps how to consciously harness it? Though honestly, even if it’s not addressed yet and we’re too distracted solving a bunch of new problems/mysteries instead, I probably wouldn’t complain.

Regarding ROs, I hope to keep encouraging Lamuel’s progress - I loved the line about being each other’s heroes, and he did so well in rising to the challenges of Sordwin, even though he’s the only RO with no previous fighting experience or special abilities. With Winter, I suppose being each other’s villains would be more appropriate, but realistically I’d settle for ending the game with a trust rating in double digits.

I know, I know, but where’s the fun in waiting for the sequels when we can speculate on it now?

Winter was in the same crew as Ruby before she got the Phoenix. She had mentioned it was a long time ago when she shared her past with the MC. Unless the captain murdered Ruby’s old captain and the captain of the Mighty as an incredibly ruthless baby, that should put Hayden at late thirties/early forties like elf!MC, Gunter and Ruby are.

Oriana’s harder to guess at, because of the ~mysterious~ past and all that. I suppose she could just be around the same age as elf!MC, but I won’t be surprised if she turns out to be even older than Ol’ Mort.

I might do a Leah/Lamuel romance but based off of what I’ve tried and what I’ve heard they seem too goodie 2 shoes for the MC’s I like to play as. So, unless anyone has made Leah their partner in crime like Dandy/Daisy can be I don’t think I’ll be interested in them because she or he comes across as the annoying morality pet.( I could be wrong about this) But if you have played a shady MC who is kind of amoral and is in a romance with them but is still able to be themselves please correct me or explain how I’m wrong then. thank you.

I kind of want it to be this because I really like Winter as a villain and while I enjoyed the friends with benefit. I don’t want them to magically fall in love with the MC and lose that evil, self-centered me against the world attitude that makes them stand out as a character just so we the player can influence and possibly change their behavior in order to meet our standards(which I really don’t want). So I’d rather it be belligerent sexual attraction to the point that they also want to kill us or at least see us as a worthy opponent but still hate us or just flat out hatred because, I would be thoroughly disappointed if they become a romance option( if they’re alive in your playthrough) who all of a sudden loose their unique spark and becomes a “good guy” now that they’re magically in love

I don’t think we know the actual lifespan of a changeling/shapeshifter(unless you or someone else does) so maybe it’s possible they are long lived like Elves and Hayden could be in their 60’s- 80’s.
They don’t have to be around the MC’s age plus it would add more history/backstory if they’re nearly 100 or in their 80’s than them being in their 30’s or 40’s. In my opinion anyways.

Personally, I always see a relationship with Winter be, at best, a “let’s screw each other before we screw over each other” kinda deal.

We do! In one of the book you can get in Sordwin, Races: The Definitive Guide to the Races of the Empire, it is stated that

Changelings mature at sixteen and rarely live to be older than one hundred.

They’re are even worse off than halflings.

Well that sucks… Thank you for re-educating me.

OH… I totally misread that then and all this time I thought Ori is shorter than me :flushed:

Is your MC human? Then I think Ori is still shorter than him just not that much.

Anyway I like the big height differences in this so I tend to go for Oriana or Leah with a brownie or halfling MC while I romance Ruby with a human.

I always thought Ori was taller than my human MC since I always imagine my MCs (if the author did not specify any height) around my RL height, which below five and a half feet. :joy:

I believe I’ve ran into a bug with a Steam Achievement. I managed to get the Find What Feels Good achievement in game, but it doesn’t register on Steam.

I feel like in some respects, noting a changeling’s natural lifespan is a moot point, because old age is definitely not going to be what Winter dies of…

Then again, they could already be an 80+ elder who decided to age disgracefully, couldn’t they? You’d never be able to tell

Nope, I’m afraid the character I romanced Lamuel with was a complete goodie two shoes. In other circumstances, I’d probably find them too saccharine, but what makes me like Lamuel/Leah is how they just throw themselves into what’s happening, no matter how crazy and outside the scope of their normal experiences. Hot stranger I met 24 hours ago? It’s true love. Mysterious island adventures? Count me in. The package we need is locked up? Guess I’m a thief now. Terrifying evil pirate trying to murder us? It’s okay I’ve got a plan. Face-stealing monsters swarming everywhere? Here’s a golden candlestick to hit them with.

It’s like if a generic NPC villager with 10HP decided they were going to join the main adventuring party, and nobody knows how they’re doing such a good job as they are, but you can’t help wanting to cheer them on.

Agreed. Though I’m a sucker for flashy power couples, and would like to team up with them on the occasional epic mission and not be afraid they were going to spoil it by bailing/backstabbing as soon as things got difficult. Let my MC lead you to glory, you cynical dumbass.

@ThomB I’m such a huge fan of the Evertree saga! They’re definitely my favorite book series, no question. I’ve read through Evertree Inn and Sordwin multiple times, and I actually wanted to point out an error i came across in Sordwin. Also, I can’t wait until the third book, Lux: City of Secrets, comes out! I know it will be a while, but I’m so excited for it and the possible books after it.

Oh and on the poll for favorite RO, I chose Lamuel and Orion. I chose Lamuel because he is so sweet and innocent and just wants to help and actually is a cinnamon bun. As for Orion, he’s had a tragic life that has left him guarded but I personally don’t feel like he’s a bad guy. And it’s honestly so adorable when he tenses or his heart races. My sister who also played through Evertree Inn and is excited to play through Sordwin (she has only done the Sordwin demo so far since at the time the full story wasn’t released),she really liked Gunther, not as a romantic interest but just as a character.

@ThomB So apparently since I’m new to this website I cannot post twice in the same thread and since I can’t seem to find out how to contact you, I suppose editing my reply will have to do. Anyways Sorry I didn’t take a screenshot or anything, but I found a piece of missing text in the story. When you’re investigating who stole the package and choose to speak with Orion, you are given choices on how to reply to something he never said. It says Orion waits for you to answer his question with a raised brow. And the choices are: “I’ll be fine. Is everything okay with you?”
“Would you care if it wasn’t?”
“Can I come with you, back to the town hall?” and
“I’d rather you stayed here with me.”
That’s all for now!

I wonder if it will make any significant difference later wether we killed the dryad in book 1 or spared her?

My favorite is Oriana of course because she is definitely a challenge. It is quite extremely hard to make her fall for you.
