Swampy’s section should be roughly drafted in. Swampy’s the dragon you get if you decide to bury the egg. The feed, clean, and sleep reactions should be implemented.
Awww! You’re mean! Don’t worry especially for you I added an option to try and boil Swampy in a cooking pot.
How about this instead- Can I have Swampy go and find Rose/Ross and boil her/him in a cooking pot? LOL! That’s what she gets for running off with that dashing adventurer!
I added Sparky. Just the feed, clean and sleep so far. Sparky is the dragon you get if you try and cook the egg.
@Galador Hahahaa! Maybe when Swampy’s older. There are plans to meet up with Rose/Ross, once I get the basic dragon stuff written.
Love this premise and the demo so far! The bit with the goose sitting on the egg was really cute. Looking forward to more!
@Eriedanna Thankyou! That dragon’s Chime and I’m just working on their section now. The Goose is important and does have a role to play. Moreso on some paths than others though.
Rough version of the third dragon stuff up. This is the one which the Goose helps hatch.
It’s still just build a nest, feed and bathe. It’s a little more time consuming than I expected but that’s always the case. Two dragons to go.
Are the dragons different personalities showing up?
Love it I always loved dragons
Well I’m getting bored of writing up all the different dragons so I think I’ll take a break from that part and move on to the romantic interest and plot stuff for a bit, then when I hit writer’s block I’ll go back and fill in those details that I missed out.
@vampierkid222 Thanks! Yeah dragons are great. It’s Choice of the Dragon’s fault I’m here.
Swampy concept art! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/OWA/SwampyConceptart_zpsfc0b0826.png
I adore that picture of Swampy. It’s perfect. He looks so cheerful and happy and you’ve managed to perfectly capture his ugliness.
I’d definitely prefer to be able to name my own Dragon!
@CJW Sure thing! I’ll add in an option for naming later. At the moment it’s easier for me to just use a default name while I code it up since I’ll otherwise mess up the variables. Once I’m done making the game though I’ll let you name your own dragon and do a find and replace.
Would you like a list of a couple of names and an option to type in your own one? Or would just the default name and a “I hate that name, let me type in my own one” work?
I think I like this. You might might want to streamline a bit - for instance put a *goto_scene 01_intro after your startup since that first empty page is kinda extraneous. Also, an *if (female) instead of *selectable_if since it looks weird if you play male at all to see that ${Rose} likes men.
I understand greyed out options meaning “Play a different path to get this!,” but I sorta think it looks weird to use that here.
Otherwise, I could really get into this!
EDIT: I think the standard List & Custom would be good.
@Looshi Great art! Swampy is so ugly it circles around back to cute. He reminds me of a pug that way.
I kind of hope Swampy ends up being the prettiest when he’s an adult if you raise him right. Like a really weird-looking kid who gets blessed by puberty and grows up to be a super model.
A la Neville Longbottom style? Agreed.
Lilac dragon’s up with food and stuff. He’s the dragon you get if you hatch the egg by the fire (instead of trying to throw it in the fire).
Just finished the last dragon. Aqua’s up. She’s the dragon if you throw the egg into the lake.
@Caddmuss I was experimenting with the *selectable_if function since I’d not used it before. I’ll definitely switch that to *if female which is what I originally thought I’d do before I remembered that selectable_if existed. Thanks for the suggestion on the goto. I’ve put that in. I wanted the startup file to just have the scenes and stat stuff and room for an intro if I wanted it.
@Eriedanna Looshi’s such a great artist. Swampy is definitely meant to be so ugly he circles back around. I had planned for there to be a pet beauty contest of some description. Swampy would likely win because none of the other pets entered could stand how bad he smells. Does it help to say he’s a cheerful dragon with a winning personality?
I made a list!
Todo:
- Code in stats to your dragon.
While I’ve listed this as number one it’s one of the last things I’ll do. The dragon should at least have a meter indicating how much it loves you which will have an impact on the encounters you can have with your dragon, as well as how it grows up. You may also be able to teach your dragon certain skills, keeping in mind each dragon has its own areas which it’s naturally good and bad at.
- Code in stats for you.
I’m still undecided if stats are needed for you. I may go the opposed personality stat or something. Or I might just go with relationship stats.
- Allow you to name both yourself and your dragon.
Not letting you name yourself is just me being lazy. Not allowing you to name your dragon is because I’m awful at remembering how to use variables properly so there’s currently placeholder names. Once I’ve written the game I’ll do a find and replace. The default names are currently, Sparky the fierce fire dragon, Swampy the stinky poison dragon, Aqua the fussy water dragon, Chime the chatty feathered dragon and Lilac the timid healing dragon.
If you want to suggest other names for the default options please do.
-
Write the play and teach reactions for each dragon.
-
Actually have the Feed, Sleep, Bathe, Teach and Play actions effect things.
Also tidy up that section so it actually makes sense.
-
Write a proper journey to the cottage and what you see inside the cottage.
-
Write the random encounters.
-
Introduce the Goose into more than just the Feathered Dragon’s path.
-
Introduce the various romance options and allow you to wander the city a bit and speak to people.
-
PLOT! Including investigating who left the egg, and tracking down Rose/Ross and The Prince.
-
Maybe fiddle with the grey dragon. Maybe not.
Anything obvious I’m missing out?
Not as far as I can see! If you expand on all of these aspects, I think you will have an excellent game! Maybe do some things where you and your dragon go on some adventures together- maybe just one or two for each dragon in their own environment. Like Aqua could take you underwater, Swampy to a swamp (obviously!), Chime to a magical forest, and Lilac to some snow capped mountains (not sure why, but those are the two environments I thought of for those two immediately after reading the names. They just make sense to me!), and Sparky to a volcano. That might be too much to do in a week though.
@Galador Oh that would be for adventures with a teen dragon if there’s ever a sequel. I definitely don’t have time for it this week although it’d certainly be nice to introduce the dragons to more of their kind when they grow older a bit and take them on that sort of adventure.
For now it’s sticking to the city. I will be trying to have each of the dragons having their own little plotline though.
There’s also plans for a pet contest. Each dragon will tackle it differently.
