I’ll just say here that I absolutely adore your writing and I was about to overlook this app until I recognized the author.
Now please please please take this advice im about to give you and understand that I say this because I honestly feel that you are better than this.
DONT use words like Baka or gomenesai it’s SO cringe worthy and it definitely takes me out of an otherwise interesting read. If this were anybody elses writing I would’ve stopped reading after the first use of ‘Baka!’ and deleted the app with not even giving it a second chance
I’m absolutely shocked im the first bring this up as a major problem. The acceptable age to be adding ‘Baka’, ‘kuso’, etc, into a story is 13-16 at the VERY oldest and even that is sort of pushing the age limit. Nobody will take you or your writing seriously if you continue throwing in random japanese words into your dialogue. I know that sounds harsh but it’s the truth
Also as a side suggestion try adding a page with all the definitions of all the words that anybody without former knowledge of japanese culture wouldn’t be able to recognize.
Other than that thanks for another interesting story and I look forward to the next installment. Despite my criticisms please understand that I only say that because I just enjoyed your story so much. I’m definitely not the type to write reviews but I feel really strongly about this.

When I see people criticizing the use of Japanese words in writings whose settings are either in Japan or inspired by Japan, I always wonder if they would criticize it also if it was another language used in a matching setting…
I mean is it something that bugs people really or is it just because of an unconsciously made correlation to fanfiction which use those words rather liberal that makes it unprofessional? I guess it’s probably the last one as the same people that cringe about words like baka are totally fine when other languages (real ones and for the setting contrived) are used…or butchered.
Also the game seems to deliberately allude to anime, manga and its respective fandom with whose words. So any fanfiction / fansub-flashbacks are probably also intentional.
A glossary isn’t a bad idea, though.

Yes, to answer your question I would criticize it. If I tried imagining someone doing the equivalent but with Tagalog it’d look weird and clunky. Look you just cant treat language like its an accessory. Dont just throw in random words wherever you think its sounds cool.
The appropriate time to sprinkle in other languages is in an english setting to show that the character cant speak english properly.
Im not saying take out, san, chan, or senpai, or any word whose meaning cant be translated to english without sounding clunky. If its a cultural thing I understand why they’d leave it in.
The thing is theres absolutely no reason to add in Japanese words. It’s set in Japan, we know theyre speaking japanese. Not only that but it takes away from the writing if anything so I see absolutely no purpose to it.
I cant remember correctly but I believe I read somewhere he planned to take this to Steam? I cant be sure but if does do that, he’s going to be made a laughing stock. To be honest Im making a big deal out of this because I really dont want to see that especially to a writer I like and a story that I enjoyed

Well the thing is. This isnt a matter of whats cool or what I think is lame. I’d say it’s kind of disrespectful. I mean you cant just slap in random words cause it’s often used in anime and manga.
I’m filipino and I can say that I’d be kind of offended if someone treated my culture and my language like this. I mean can you imagine if a japanese author tried writing english characters in an english setting and wrote the entire story in japanese but threw in random catchphrases from sitcoms into their dialogue and wrote it in english letters? Doesn’t that sound ridiculous?
And another point I’d like to make is like, most asians are forced to conform to american culture because they’re teased and they’re made to feel ashamed about their own culture. Then they have to watch people not only accessorize their culture but just bastardize their language? I can tell you right now that there are japanese people who feel really angry about that. Though on that subject I have to wonder if I have any right to talk seeing as I’ve only ever heard a literal friend of a friend who feels that way. I suppose Ill leave that topic to an actual japanese person.
Though to summarize I really feel this is a change that should be made.

You know that’s really funny, because a bunch of Japanese manga authors are literally doing this? German and French are particularly popular. And in many cases the editors don’t even seem to use spellcheck.

To say that the author would be made into a laughing stock is a little exaggerated and to be entirely honest, whilst your suggestion may be welcomed to help improve the author’s games, you seem to be rather forceful than seeming to just offer your opinion.
All in all, it really is up to the author to decide how he/she wants the game to come across and what he/she wants to write. There’s no need to be that critical or harsh towards the author or people that may disagree with your opinion. After all, is it really fair to make an author that you appreciate change the way he/she writes in order to suit what you prefer best?

I mean honestly. It might seem like something little but I’ve seen people get death threats because of things like this. It’s not pretty. I use exaggerated terms like that to hopefully get things across to the author because my god I do not want to see this happen to them.
And ok yes I guess youre right in that i did come across as forceful. That was my fault I apologize. I really did try to keep in mind that, when it comes down to it this is the authors work which was why I said ‘should’ rather than ‘had to’ change it. I guess I just got heated imagining someone treating my own culture like that and got angry.
But when it comes down it I mean, is it really ok to say it’s ok for this author to come across as childish and ignorant just because they have that choice?
This isnt a matter of preference or I promise you I wouldn’t have said anything in the first place. This is an actual problem that has to be addressed.
I feel that way, the way you mentioned. I’m a mix of East Asian heritages, and when I see something like that I cringe. And the person who said Asian countries do the same with English words: that’s definitely true, too. Both situations bug me to no end, but I feel like I’ve kind of gotten desensitized to Asians throwing random English words in because I’ve been surrounded by it for so long? (i.e J/K/M pop music, guys…it’s everywhere). It still drives me crazy sometimes, and I just don’t understand why they can’t use the native language equivalent. There are so many songs with English titles, English phrases in their choruses and just random words thrown in the verses…and it’s just like ‘there is no good reason why you need to use English. There are equivalent words in the native language, why are you not using them?’
The flip side of using random Asian words, in this case Japanese, feels newer to me. At any rate, it’s annoying, and every other person I’ve commiserated about this with amongst my Asian American friends feels the same way.
OKAY RANT OVER. That being said, I didn’t really feel like the word usage is a huge issue in the case of this game. It doesn’t seem overwhelming to me, though I suppose in instances where someone says ‘Baka!’ could just as easily be replaced with ‘idiot!’. The Japanese names and locations are appreciated, though, and adding the characters for the numbers of the spirits you have to handle was a nice touch. IMO, I didn’t get the impression that it was overdone to the point of being annoying. And the storyline itself is great, the character development and interaction was great, and I loved the system and the way the game flowed. I’m extremely excited for the sequel…please let there be many more 
Yes, you’re right they do. And they appear completely silly and ridiculous. You say they don’t even use spellcheck, like thats a good thing? Not to mention a lot of countries around the world are subject european colonialism. You can’t really accuse someone or misusing a culture if it’s literally being forced upon people and idealised to the point where even the letters seem cute or fashionable. That’s a whole other can of words, though. To an English speaking author, to use the language of a culture that is marginalised where they’re from in a manner which it is being chopped up, and seperated into small consumable pieces for the eurocentric public to consume in a way they find cute or entertaining is not acceptable.

I specifically answered to one passage in which you initiatly used this comparsion, to point out how bad it actually is, nothing more, nothing less.
I didn’t go further into the following passage because it oobviosly brings up some rightful points (which could have gone in your first post, as it made much clearer what made you actually cringe) which would anyway stay important without even going further into “how it looks in Japan” and i thought that would be clear. Sorry, next time i will be clearer.
(Though i’m confused why you think i meant that they don’t seem to use spellcheck would be a good thing :\ it was just an observation)

Oh Im sorry! I was actually really distressed in the time I replied. In fact I was shaking from how anxious I was. In the end I had a friend write up for me their own thought because I just felt really…Im not sure. I feel bad because in the end Im not japanese and the best I could do is imagine if someone did that to my own language. So im not sure if I have a right to be stressed about this. Perhaps it was the medicine because it tends to make my heart beat faster… Well either way.
Im not blaming anyone for me shaking I promise, just explaining that at that point in time I was probably just expecting someone to argue with me so I took what you said in a negative fashion. Since it came across to as if you were saying it’s fine because other japanese people do the same to english. Sorry about that, really I am.

Yes I feel the same! It was a bit distracting but not some huge problem. It was spaced out enough that it wasn’t really horribly bad. I still enjoyed both the story and the characters immensely. Though what made me start insisting was the idea that there are people who would definitely not be as kind with their words. Shown to the right people and there could be some witch hunt of people demanding the app be taken down. That is not even an exaggeration. People have done so for much less Im afraid. Idk if I sound paranoid but I mean Ive seen so many people be bullied badly for very similar reasons and again Im just worried about the author.
I guess what really got me heated was people telling me that it wasn’t an issue at all and that it was all my opinion and that I shouldn’t force it on other people and that’s not the case at all. It’s an actual racial issue that needs to be acknowledged and I onkly started sounding forceful when people argued and told me its not even a problem. Im not saying they cant enjoy japanese culture or anything like that. Just try not to disrespect it.
Now to add some positivity which I definitely haven’t given enough of for how much I did genuinely enjoyed this app. I have to agree with you in that I was pretty impressed with the amount of research they put into japanese culture.

Again Im not saying this cause Im angry at the author or anything like that. In the end I made similar mistakes when I was a kid. I just want them to know that there are people who come from that culture who react negatively to foreigners who do this to their language. Negatively meaning anything from slightly uncomfortable/annoyed to legitimately angered.
With all that said though Ill end on this note. Despite everything Ive said I really did enjoy this story and I really want to see more of it. I really really do. Like everyone else I cant wait for the next installment.
