As for the addictions, it’s interesting that “internet” is the one that will bite us in the ass hardest. Perhaps it’s the digital footprint revealing that we are alive after the apartment fire to the demons (same reason why we aren’t to respond to texts)?

I think it’s also the fact that nothing works in pocket dimensions/phaseshifts/etc. Add to this the fact that the returning magic in general conflicts technology. Not a good time to be an intertet addict… a lot of possibilities to get more pyschological debuffs in addition to demons using the internet)

I also wonder if the gadgeteering hobby extends to non-electronic items. When I picked it (since my main guy is afraid of spiders to the point that he probably wouldn’t keep houseplants, which was his original hobby) as my hobby I thought it included other types of repairs as well.

Also, did anyone else encounter the little girl in the RV? And why do I feel like that’s going to be relevant again?

Besides what’s already been said, here’s more info from the FAQ in the second post of the thread.

What is with all these grayed-out options?

Options will be grayed out if they conflict with a previous choice the player made if you haven’t fulfilled the prerequisites for unlocking them.

An example would be the “I’m lying about my amnesia” option not being selectable if you didn’t choose to have amnesia in the first place.

If nearly all the options have been grayed out, then usually that’s triggered by your fear or vice kicking in or because your MC is literally possessed (Congratulations!). You may want to work on that.

Good to have confirmation that it’s not bugged, it’s just rare to achieve then!

However, there’s no choices in the game grayed out/blocked off due to not being written anymore. (Tons of flavor text and branches you can’t see, but no blocked choices) Even choosing the Book Club just reroutes back to the Polo Club with a warning now.

It’s not just purely atmospheric too (although that’s definitely something I keep in mind when using it), the unskippable locked-out options also indicate that something’s going wrong. There’s actually hints/implications there regarding exactly why that happened at that exact point.

Do you mean that you’re able to get another item from the convenience store without being forced to take the cigarettes or booze first (if you have those addictions), then that might be a bug?

The game is supposed to force the addicted MC to get the booze/cigarettes first. (Internet & prescription addicts sidestepped the issue since an item related to their addiction isn’t in the store).

The gadgetry hobby gets the generic tech boost which should allow the more detailed info about the RV and other such things, but don’t expect to be able to go full mechanic on whatever crosses your path.

So far 12 out 112 people had the girl show up which is a decent-ish number.

Edit: Also, I keep forgetting to mention, but I’ve been editing the FAQ all along. It’s now got a bunch more guides linked inside of it than it did at the beginning. If you know of any other guides not linked, please LMK.

No, I am forced to take the item that relates to my addiction first, which is normal. No bug. I just noticed that there is a grayed out option to forgo it, which makes me think of ITFO (wherein those options are there but deliberately grayed out). And you also said that those grayed out options are normal, so there’s definitely no bug there.

Also, the internet addict MCs did get forced to pick the solar battery for their phone (at the convenience store), to go with the million billion other chargers and batteries they had packed when they left the apartment. Have yet to play a prescription pill addicted MC, so I wouldn’t know about them (although I am surprised that the rest stop stocks mead and absinthe).

Yeah, it would be a bit of a stretch to say that the rest stop also has a pharmacy in it (although in OKS’s 2030, maybe pharmacies are popping up everywhere with Pestilence’s walk across the earth?).

Thanks for the clarification! That section of the code was very buggy to implement and I was afraid that disabling the camera was allowing people to bypass the addictions somehow or something else random. :sweat_smile:

I was dithering on whether to force Internet Addict to take the battery charger or not (makes sense, but unlike the other addictions, that could actually be helpful!). Looks like the public version uses the variation where I went with it. Which is going to be the final version because I’m not touching that code again if I can help it.

Also, Alcoholic MC can’t escape via use of fancy drinks, so yeah, it’s legal to sell, so convenience stores with liquor licenses be going crazy during the apocalypse. Prescription Med Addict definitely sidestepped the issue here, it’s Darkness Phobe who takes their place with the “no, I must have that!” (source of light in this case).

So, I picked the fencing hobby, went to the first aid station, and then Adrian went to the first aid station to grab the very same kit I had grabbed on the previous page… is that a bug, or is the reality breaking that much?

Oh, and a bona fide error if you're stupid with your wound treatment.

The first error was a pretty simple fix (game not taking the “sprinting” variable into consideration), but the second one was really weird… it wouldn’t show up on the most updated version of Choicescript but popped up on the older version I’m running on my website (since I couldn’t get the smPlugin/Dashingdon-style saves to work with the new CS).

Anyway, I think I figured out a workaround for that and pushed out a hotfix to all versions of the game (except the one on Itch.io, that only gets the major updates). You’ll have to clear your browser’s cache for the fix to go into effect.

Thanks! And this typo should also be fixed since it was in the same section of the game as the gamebreaking bug. I really need to stop using MC Surname as a test character.

I briefly considered a Walgreens type setup where it’s half convenience store-thing, half pharmacy, but without any prep in advance there’s realistically no way they’d be able to figure out where the exact meds MC needs would be stashed in the little time they had in there (much to Adrian’s great relief).

Also, hitting the pharmacy was always meant to be its own separate thing.

I fixed it in my version of the game (which should be available with the next big public Open Beta update at the end of this month). What I really should do is tear out that entire section and redo it as a simpler multireplace instead, but I don’t really want to backtrack to Chapter 1 right now. :smiling_face_with_tear:

I’m loving this game so much. It’s such a chaotic mix of everything I enjoy. Having said that, it’s unfortunate that I’m having trouble playing sound. Anyway to troubleshoot this?
I’m playing on an iphone 15 pro, updated to iOS 18, and running on safari

My MC went the “Perfectly Normal” route and it’s so hilarious how fast the corruption bar turned zalgo text lmfao
Too bad Merlin removed the mark after I called him a heretical apostate and chucked Adrian across the room :cry:
Pretty sure possession overrides “lying about amnesia”. Doing differently my next replay, I guess…

A select few, for the sake of coding (and who we see in game and meet, that are confirmed not to be us). However, which few is unknown.

After all, “someone friendly to Camelot during King Arthur’s later reign” is a lot of people.

It’s ambiguous even in the code. And I wouldn’t want it any other way.

If you mean the link that Merlin sends over if you have the MC fuss at them about the length of Merlin’s Guide, then that’s the Arthurian collection at Project Gutenberg. I went into a bit more detail on the reply to the Tumblr question (which should eventually be making its way through the queue).

That’s pretty realistic, so you can certainly imagine it like that. That one looks something like a bastard/hand-a-half sword to me, which a bunch of other characters are using too.

Okay, after messing around with this for several hours, I think this is an incompatibility between iOS and the OGG sound files. I thought that Safari had started supporting OGG several years ago (which is also what the web compatibility websites are saying), but I can’t get the sound to work on any iPhones. And the internet is still full of people saying their OGG files aren’t working on iOS, so…

Here are a couple other games that also use sound upon starting up the game. (Presumably they’re using MP3s since they played on my iPhone.)

And I (temporarily) set the starting soundtrack to play on the front page of my website using the game’s sound files.

So, if you can hear audio in the other Choicescript games and not on my website, then that means it’s an iOS compatibility issue.

If the MC is in the midst of a possessive fit, then it overrides ë̶̤́v̵̧̊̐ē̷̦̤͐͝r̷̗͕̲̐ÿ̴̥̱̻́ẗ̶̻͎̙̎̒h̴̲̟̳́̂̆i̷͙̐̉̓͜͜n̵̻̈g̸͎̝̮̚, but normally it wouldn’t be overriding the secrets flavor text.

As other’s mentioned, there’s four different possible variations of Camelot MC who can appear anywhere in Merlin’s Guide.
