Without getting into spoilers, that’s due to certain previous choices you made. It should be explained later in the game.
Ok, thanks for the info!
I also noticed that there are some choices that allow us to forgo the addictive substance we chose/not get the item that relates to it at the rest stop. Are those locked to cheat mode? Or is it like ITFO wherein the choices are there purely for flavor and you can’t actually pick them (yet)? Or is that setup for something that may help us way later and/or bite us in the ass strongly?
This is correct. The addictions, phobias and vices will have subplots dedicated to the MC dealing with them (or not), and the blocked out choices are meant to represent the MC’s inability to resist them at this point in the story.
Sometimes true but there are a lot of greyed choices you can definitely get on other plays. There’s a ton of variability based on choices you might not even think important, but they all add up.
Is it possible to avoid possession if you choose to return to your apartment? It seems that no matter what choices I make I’m forced to go to sleep and end up getting grabbed/bit by the hydra thing under the bed.
Also, are we currently able to figure out who we are the reincarnation of or is that yet to be implemented? Sorry, I have a lot of questions lol.
It is, you can actually be forced to go to sleep and still not get corrupted. It’s tied to corruption status and a hidden one, denial. Escaping the hydra is another thing, not related to possession, I think. There’s a bunch of status checks there
Not yet, I think we’ll only know near the end
Ah, cool. To be honest I don’t really understand the corruption stat. It seems like I’ll just gain some at random from seemingly inconsequential decisions.
True, but in this specific case
the MC’s addiction forces them to buy the relevant item.
There’s a guide if you want any help with that.
Very helpful, thank you!
“Clairvoyance is certainly a secret power that certain MCs can be brewing, but it’s not the Lucid Dreamer MC. That talent is manifesting in such a way that it’s mimicking a certain other power. (Although from the outside, the Lucid Dreamer would probably look clairvoyant. Also kinda nuts, but that also goes along with clairvoyancy.)” From an Ask on Tumblr.
Do we know what type of MC is clairvoyant yet?
I suspect it is either Cloudcuckoolander or Lying Amnesiac MC that appears clairvoyant. But someone else may know better.
Nothing has been officially confirmed, but MCs with high cloudcuckoolander stats often have accurate premonitions. Options that involve predictions about the future (something the game tracks) also invariably increase the cloudcuckoolander stat. Combined with the ask you’ve quoted stating that clairvoyants are frequently eccentric, cloudcuckoolanders (or, at least, those predisposed towards prophetic statements) seem like the chief suspects.
MCs with high magic stats can also pick up on things about to go wrong, and in at least one case, a prophetic statement also raises the magic stat.
Finally, Fake Amnesia MCs seem to have largely suppressed knowledge of the future, but that seems to come from their awareness of the fourth wall. I suspect their case is more of a Groundhog’s Day timeloop where they remember previous playthroughs, rather than traditional clairvoyance.
Very interested in what other people’s theories about this are, though.
Any info when book club route is coming?
I think this is the latest statement on the topic:
Thanks. It is understandable. I wish the author good luck and fun!
It would be nice if there was a choice near the beginning of the game to say that your mc is mute, or maybe just lock out the option to speak after you have been silent for a certain amount of choices. That way you don’t accidentally lock yourself out of the “mute” route with one choice
Otherwise I absolutely love the game so far ^^
Oooh that sounds interesting!
THEORY TIME. My theories were that Liar (lying about amnesia) is either a demon at the back of our mind or Camelot!MC that knew the future. It’s said at some point that the Liar is doing all that for a chance to alter fate, those who know the future are cursed to be unable to change it (clairvoyance curse) and cuckoo flavor text says something about them seeking safety in being cryptic. So in a way having your secret be lying about amnesia and having high cuckoo stats may turn out quite badly if we really want to escape fate! For example Merlin in oks is said to have been sealed so they wouldn’t try to prevent Camelot from falling and possibly mess up things even more terribly because of the clairvoyance curse!
I think it may be Camelot!MC because people from Camelot seem to be stuck with specific roles. Not sure how/if Arthuriana explains it, but it works quite nicely for oks! For example Elaine and Lancelot always have to get together so we can get Galahad who finds the Holy Grail even if they have no interest in one another which makes it easier to write 4 reincarnations that in practice follow their predestined path with some player interaction.
There was also an ask on Tumbr about time travel in oks and it basicially said it’s impossible unless you do something like send information through time so that could potentially be the way the clairvoyance is working. If you took that and combined it with the clairvoyance curse and Liar secret and your Groundhog’s Day theory it could mean that Liar is a clairvoyant trying their best here. Merlin and Percival are the confirmed clairvoyance havers, but I couldn’t find anyone else that could be a candidate through google.
I thought they could be a demon because a few time I thought I was getting flavour text because of possesion it turned out to be Liar specific instead. In general to me they seem quite smiliar and it’s easy to confuse the two somehow.
So my vote is primarly on the cuckoo stat with other options like reincarnation or secret possibly having some influence. I can be completely off-kilter here, but when the game realeses we will all be clairvoyant anyway!
I agree that this is likely the case. It’s all but stated that Fake Amnesia MC remembers their past life:
- A familiar feeling. But you’ve never been in quite as much physical danger as this. Not in this lifetime.
- Lore dump? Is that what [Merlin’s] called nowadays?
- You’ve never met that white-clad stranger - not in this lifetime.
Given that they remember a past life and Merlin, it’s highly probable that they remember Camelot.
The only other explanation I can think of is that they’re using past life more metaphorically, in which case they could’ve met Merlin during the Second Circle. Depending on when exactly they were found in the desert, the timelines of the Second Circle’s failure and the MC showing up in Nevada could line up quite nicely.
Of course, it could always be both, with the MC’s memories of their past incarnation returning due to their taking part in a Lesser Circle. Still, this wouldn’t explain why no one could recognize them, so I don’t consider this theory very likely.
There are a few instances where they trigger the same text, but they generally seem quite different: the possessed voice is gleefully deranged, whereas the amnesia voice, while often amused or taunting, comes across as more bitter or melancholy. This quote could support your theory (the italicized part only shows up for a Fake Amnesia MC):
- And then with great self-possession, oh, if only you knew, you point over your shoulder towards the tendrils of darkness that are even now undulating their way down your hallway.
However, it seems likely that this is in reference to the player as a possessing entity, since the Fake Amnesia path is already full of these sorts of meta references.
The issue here is that several options (cloudcuckoolander, high magic and fake amnesia) all provide hints independently, so a combination being required seems unlikely.
