Older development thread (The Aegis Saga - Blood)

@Silhuetta - thank you so much - I appreciate all three links! And thank you @poison_mara for steering me towards a beta testing system - was totally unaware :sheep:

Reading the threads I’m going to have to learn two of the three I hexpect :eyeglasses:

Is hexpecting some sort of ritual that makes you a master at choicescript? And here I was reading through the zillion pages about how to use choicescript. Thanks for steering me in the right direction!

It is just you need practice, I still remember how hard was learning CS at first. You end learning about it

Coda bugs - they always turn up when you least expect it

Now all I can imagine is that bug people live somewhere in our game.

Hmm. . .

My index.html reads

I’m opening it in textedit, maybe I could try Komodo - but will have to re-download

You code on a phone!?!

I know - I think the old version of index.html has been split out - there is a ‘navigator.js’ in the ‘web’ folder of the newest choicescript downloads = I will try that.

You are doing it wrong you have to open it in a text editor there you would see a lot of code.
Edit I have no idea, because I code in mobile phones so no PC knowledge. Some people used note + or something like that. If you want give me via pm your files and I try to get it work.
Yes I code in phones, it’s so easy and useful for me.

Could you tell me how you code on phones @poison_mara? Namely, what app do you use?

I am on Android. I have a file manager to download and work with files like in a pc. I use a text editor called Iota + to code is like pc ones. Also I use an app called dropbox sync to synchronization in real time my devices with my Dropbox account I could modify a file everywhere in seconds with it.

Dear gods of Eris, I think I managed to get the save function working!!!

I cannot thank @Silhuetta and @poison_mara enough for their help getting me there. Whooooooooooooo

I’m uploading a second demo now with the save function (worried copying over the other file will mess up people’s demo playthroughs)

Okay

So another significant update in addition to the save function. And one that many people on this forum may consider - - in poor taste - -

I have implemented a linear story function for ‘The Aegis Saga - Blood’ which will be proofed alongside the choice-driven majority of the story.

This is likely to be something some people feel is unnecessary, . . insulting even. Why offer that here on Cog of all place?

Like many people here I love choicescript. It has provided my writing and imagination with more freedom than anything I’ve ever seen. Bar nothing.

So allow me to explain why I’ve done it.

I think that we remain a small (I would say select ) bunch of people, on a unique and wonderful fringe of our great international culture of literature, and our newer but equally great culture of games. However, I believe choicescript has the potential to reach so many more - to entertain a generation of kids and grown-up kids while teaching them to reconnect with their imaginations.

Some of these people (my immediate family, being among them) may come to enjoy choice within fiction, but unfortunately at the moment choice-driven stories seem to them to feel disjointed, even confusing, when compared to the linear paper novels they are used to.

I do not want to pass over or ignore people who hold this perspective.
Indeed I think many of them could come to find joy in choice-driven fiction if they were only to be introduced to it in a slow, measured way, driven by their curiosity.

I am giving my wonderful family and their friends a linear option in ‘The Aegis Saga - Blood’, because one day I want them to choose to read the choice-driven option.

And I think we bring people closer to that when the choice is only a mouse-click or finger-touch away.

@nightcap , I don’t believe that this will be truly detrimental to the series. Yes, the choices may be more linear- but if they have a more meaningful impact, I’m sure that it’ll be a huge hit. Plus, your writing is fabulous(which helps).

So…go get 'em!

PS: Good job on getting the save system to work. You’ve progressed far more than I ever did.

EDIT: Why can’t I be a sea eagle? :sob:

Well, Coming from a rp background I offer you a better alternative to a linear for them a RANDOMLY GENERATED STORY. You could have a random dice to each choice and make it select all the game. So Yes your family will see a linear story but One that changes. That way you could show them the best of Cog , See mom you could have a different story each time, sometimes you are a boy hero romancing a good girl others a non binary badass… Also a random generated story is great for detection of bugs

Hahaha

linear types had to get something

plus it was a good opportunity to give them an eensie dig for being so, ‘clear-sighted’ ‘habitual’ and generally stubborn!

It was really lovely to wake up and find that the first response was such a nice one. Thanks @Silhuetta

I think you are also undervaluing our clear Sil-sensai and Night-newbie relationship

That’s really interesting, you’re right that would be pretty cool - I was actually thinking about how to look at randomness too, it would be a pretty big step to use it more in Aegis.

Personally I was thinking of testing a ‘colours’ system first (so that adjectives like ‘blue’ ‘red’ through the story were randomized) to test it out (and test me out), then going from there. But I’ll probably have to bench that while I do the proofing (I seem to have set myself quite a short deadline :confounded:)

So anyways, I was mulling over contributing to the 4th Annual Comp with a sponsorship prize for randomness, to see how people engaged with the mechanic (and spread the CS learning, yay!)

Alright laddies and laddettes -

The linear version of the demo has now been proofed and is available through the same demo link at the top.

I am going to get some fresh air and walk the dogs, because I think 7 days of coding has left them wanting some attention :yum:

The one at the bottom is also supporting my choicescript and pushing me towards going paperless by eating my pens.
