Well you’re a pretty much perfect native speaker, so I guess they don’t impact you or @TSSL as much as they do people like Mara or me. Again I hate compensating for this by having to possibly start typing out everything as if it was a legal brief for EU law in English in my office software as that would just suck any fun right out of the whole thing.
I think the discourse default is thirty edits per day? So especially if one makes several posts in a single day it wouldn’t be hard to reach that number. (I didn’t know that either though, since I rarely make very many posts in one day; I just now looked it up to find out the limit.)
It is easy, if you are as clumsy as me, with English. I mean who cares about see in detail how I change verbs time and pronouns?
I never reached the maximum edits when there still was a grace period either and not being able to edit will make my posts worse too, unless I start treating this like work and typing it out in office, which isn’t something I’m very keen on doing. This forum has a lot of non-native speakers so this new policy will likely make it a worse experience for a lot of us.
I downloaded a special spell check grammar while writing but works really badly.
Yes, I can imagine; I’ve lived and worked in environments where I was using other languages, and other alphabets (spelling, oy).
I do use the edit function a lot myself, especially if I’m on mobile…or if I just decide I’ve babbled more than is necessary. Or I want to clarify. Or or or. So a lot of my posts are probably going to read seven edits instead of one now. XD
I have more than seven for sure, I was checking out and 3 or 4 is normal .lol
Yeah, and then you can makes about five posts per day with the new limits. ![]()
Those just tend to make it worse, I have one of those, but I always turn it off. I just turned it on briefly only to remember why I turned it off in the first place as it is usually really, really bad at guessing which word I want to type. Turning having into haven…etc…etc..
So I guess that really does mean typing everything out in office then proofreading it and then checking, which makes this into work, instead of fun.
Or just do it like me and let the weirdness flow. My spellcheck must be pirate I wrote Cog and changes it for Grog
Sorry Mara, but that’s not really an acceptable solution for me. I have had a decent education in English and I could usually catch my most egregious errors when seeing my posts in the thread and it is a serious annoyance I won’t be able to do that any longer now.
Wait, are you hitting the max edits per day? I can change that. (That is, I did just change that.)
Or, can you say what the problem you’re actually hitting is? It should pop an error, what does the error say?
It looks like it, since I’m no longer able to do this… and I’d like to agree with the other people who also find the details to be useful. A lot of times, people add on to a post and if I’ve already read it, I don’t want to have to skim it to find what it was. (Or if they’ve just changed a typo, that saves time figuring out what it was.)
I’m somewhat amused that I’m apparently your default additional native speaker ![]()
(Honestly, I wouldn’t have known you weren’t a native speaker if you hadn’t ever said so
)
I had noticed that I’ve recently been marked for edits immediately, which does happen a lot if I spot a typo right away, or have an afterthought ![]()
If the maximum edits could be raised, even without the grace period, and the details could be returned, I think that would work for everybody, am I correct? ![]()
Edit: …And it looks like this has been officially addressed right while I was typing this up
excellent!
My English teachers both at high school and university would be so pleased.
And aghast at letting an increasing amount of US English “barbarisms” slip into my spelling and grammar over the years too, no doubt. Or starting a sentence with “And” for example. ![]()
Yep, and this is the most annoying bit, since this happens to me practically constantly, for some reason I’m much better at checking my own posts once I actually see them in the thread.
Not really, the number of maximum edits that would be generally satisfactory without the grace period would differ starkly between users from @ParrotWatcher who seems to hardly need any, to people like me and Mara who may need a lot. Really that five minute grace period was bliss for me, I can’t imagine what sort of troubles would have weighed against revoking it, particularly since this seems to be a move which might make a forum dedicated to essentially celebrating creative writing much less legible. ![]()
Okay, so what’s actually the problem with not having a grace period? Can you be specific? Are you not able to edit because of X reason (and if so, what is the reason?)
Okay, making say two quick spelling edits and one minor addition in five minutes, something that happens to me with some regularity now takes three precious edits, where previously it took only one or none. This has caused me today, for the first time I recall to run out of allowed edits.
The reason is reached maximum number of allowed daily edits. So I could now let the quality of my posts degrade by not editing them for spelling or grammar after the fact anymore or indeed treating it like work and typing out everything in my office software, but like I said that sucks the fun right out of anything and makes it into a chore.
Okay, I bumped up the daily edits to 200. Does that fix the problem? (And if not, why? I mean, I can push it up to something ridiculous like 1000 if it’s really a problem.)
I can give you a better answer to that question once I’ve lived with it for a few days.
But for me at least I think it should.
If you’re still bumping up against it, tell me and I can raise it again.
Whelp, you don’t know what you had until it’s gone apparently, yes, I now agree with @TSSL and others on this, guess I didn’t fully comprehend what the details setting actually governed on this forum before.
I’m actually kinda glad that that those details are hidden now? I remember thinking a couple of times that it was a bit faulty that, for example, someone could delete their post for X or Y reason and any regular user could just click the li’l orange pencil and dig up what the original poster had wanted to get rid of. I can also understand that some people might feel that their privacy’s being breached when anyone could see that they caught a typo 10 minutes later and wanted to fix that.
The only exception to the rule that I could think of would be that the first post of all threads should allow you see the details of what changed. I know I used to do this all the time for the Upcoming Hosted Games/Choice of Games Releases threads – it used to let me easily see what got added to the list or was postponed/otherwise delayed without having to wrack my memory.
