I dare someone to do a wholly faithful choice adaptation of Clarissa.
It really bothers me that it says right in the description that you play as a woman, yet an army of reviewers have given it low ratings because itās genderlocked.
People assumed from the Undercover cover the game would be genderlocked.
Why not here?
Iād say itās cause they are rather looking for stuff to be upset about
Yeah giving something a low rating because of something like a gender locking the protagonist is completely unfair. I wish there was a way to down-vote ratings like that. I confess I have virtually no interest in playing games gender-locked to male, but I wouldnāt download one and then give it a low rating because of it.
Nice to see this released, though as a straight male who had a bit of a thing for the BBC version of Eilzabeth it would have been nice to have a male counterpart where you could date any of the Bennet girls. I realise thatās a very different kind of story/game but something to bear in mind in the futureā¦
It honestly makes me want to write a female gender locked game just to spite them.
I have no problem with someone not liking something but rating it 1 just because of gender is stupid.
I think that would be so different than reading the story in Elizabeths pov that it would require an entirely different game.
Also Iām pretty sure that if we would be able to play a male MC here then it would have the same problems as Choice of Romance.
Soā¦there was that re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice that came out a few years ago that was appropriately titled Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
Could this be the first Choice Script game to have a zombie mode DLC?
@Camille622,
Donāt forget about Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters
I can see that happening if Gray and @JimD would decide to work together xD
Well shit this games really has its consequences.
Just a heads up, Bennet is rated E for Everyone on Android when itās apparently adult fiction.
I donāt think it is. There were only two choices
- Kiss him passionately
- Flirt with him then the game forces you to kiss him.
Also SURPRISE the game apparently doesnāt tell you your getting married to him.
Hmm. It might be just me, but I feel like Iām just looking out from the MCās eyes as she does whatever she wants.
(I actually do want to hear Maryās speech about pride, Lizzy.)
Aw, shucks. This is not on Steam, is it?
If it was, Iād buy it, itās a nice little romp different from other games.
I agree with this. I bought the game in an instant, it was pretty good but it didnāt really feel like I was playing it, just reading.
Iāve just played through the game a few times- and I have to say, the main plot in pursuing Mr. Darcy is a wonderful adaptation of the original novel. That said, itās hard to mess up any relationship unless you directly (and in some cases repeatedly) insult whichever given suitor/ and with a lack of stats there is no real challenge at this, as the story stays very close to the original book.
However, in the case that you wish to pursue Collins, and accept his marriage proposal The game immediately shifts perspective to Charlotte, and you play the remainder of the game pursuing the other romance options- it feels a bit forced/ almost as if you surrender your character and continue like nothing had happened.
A big issue that I have with this story is that many of the options seem not to matter- and as mentioned by @sljzz & @magiqian Iām just along for the ride/ not actually influencing smaller details of day to day life. There seem to be many more āfalse choicesā than a typical COG story, the biggest example of this being how narrator even mocks the choice to leave your parents be and respect their privacy when they are arguing - forcing you to spy on them anyway- "You decide to give your parents privacy. After all, listening in on their conversation would be rude. So you return to your room to take a nap. Pffft, yeah right! What fun is that? You get closer to the door and open your ears wide.
Something that really took me out of the story was a few times when things like āweirdo,ā and āheās hot,ā were thrown around. An entire scene dedicated to this was the option of asking Darcy āDo you have a girlfriend,ā (which is probably just me nitpicking) - but that whole dialogue option boldly out of the period, especially with the PCās response āHey, Iāve had boyfriends, pal,ā - I would have rather it been replaced by discussions of courting to make it era appropriate.
Even if itās rated like that I donāt think that people who are too young could be blamed for the bad reviews of this game. I mean kids probably stay away just when they see the cower pic or read the summary. Or maybe itās just me but Iām sure that 10 or 12 year old me wouldnāt even have read the summery after seeing the cower pic.
Anyway I agree with those who say the choices are sometimes too restricted. The biggest annoyance for me was how I couldnāt just ignore Wickham. I tryed my best to show that Iām not interested in him, but the game later still acted as if Lizzy had a crush on Wickham or something like that. I understood when people teased Lizzy about it at the Netherfield ball or when they talked about it ābehindā Lizzys back, after all rumours sometimes can be so far away from the actual facts, but I didnāt appreciate it when the narrating said the same thing.
Also since we can already romance people who are cannonically meant for others I still wish we could romance some female characters too even tho she doesnāt have much appearance in it I think Darcyās sister is interesting, I know given the era marriage wouldnāt be an option but something secret maybe?
@Uniqueth I noticed the same thing about the modern expressions in it. I can hardly imagine people in that era saying things like āhe is hotā or āGee, thanksā tho I always avoid the āDo you have a girlfriend?ā option these things still broke the immersion. But luckily there are just a few of these and the majority still has that feeling to it whatās needed for enjoying this game at least imo.
Almost forgot this: When you romanced Collins what do you mean the perspective switched to Charlotte and you coninued to pursue the other ROs, did you have to search a match for Charlotte (that actually sounds interesting) or was that still about Lizzy?
It was pretty much the exact same story Lizzy would have gone through, but because she had already agreed to marry Collins, it just changes the name to Charlotte- and how all of Lizzyās sisters are suddenly closer to her though she remains a family friend. (It feels like an easy fix for the rest of the story so that the author didnāt have to change much)
