Monsters of New Haven High - last update 4/02

Hell, even if they never appeared aside from vague references I’d be interested in a codex/monsterlog type thing. I would also be very interested in your take on Bloody Mary.

@Sashira Also, you’ve mentioned a potential sequel several times, I know it is WAY too early for any real details, but would this be continuing our individual character’s stories or a separate tale in the same universe? I’d prefer the first but either would be awesome.

Obviously the sequel is only barely sketched out at this point, but it will take place at a monster university where non-human students from all over the country (and some foreign students) will go to be taught by teachers knowledgeable of their special needs. (Most if not all of the staff will be monsters.)

Echidna will make an appearance, and the main conflict revolves around some sinister disappearances. I also have a short list of possible monsters to include as students or faculty.

I was thinking of whether people could keep their current characters; I’m not sure yet, but I’m leaning towards “no”. Each of the main monsters in this story gets multiple endings, where their future lives are sketched out past the point where they would have chosen a college. So, I’d have to include Monster U in one of their possible futures to have it make any sense, and then you’d know as of starting Game 2 some spoilers about where they ended up after that.

well a option on that front could always be a child/childe of your original char or merely a choice they made later down the road well outside the characters story in this one or maybe a off shoot continuation involving a character you met in the first one that you didn’t manage to kill or became friends with or not relation at all to your original char just knew of your old char like a stalker or your old char was well known enough that the highlights of your life could have been refrenceable like kirk was at the academy

Maybe an option? With multiple endings and then you could import your save file with the college choice? Otherwise you could play a different character like with Da Origins.

While I’d prefer continuing our characters stories, I completely understand wanting to keep it separate if you feel our tale is over. Do whatever you believe is best, with your writing abilities I’m sure either way it’ll be awesome.

Heheh Monsters University. :stuck_out_tongue:

I like the idea of starting a new character in the sequel. Since there will be international students, we could have some interesting choices to play as monsters from other cultures. Also, then I won’t feel forced to pursue an ending where my high school monster goes to college.

That’s a good idea. If I do have players create a new character for Game 2, I could make your monster from Game 1 an NPC or a legend that the new students pass around. Then I could stick to whatever ending your character actually got, while still giving them a nod.

I was also thinking that some of the major non-playable NPCs, like Vickie the Kitsune, might be available to play in the sequel.

Apparently I can’t edit the main post any more, because of how the forum software works. But here:

Update 4/25/15
Game progress:
676 kb of writing and code (after streamlining much coding with the edit.)

Uploaded a major edit of Day 1, including new coding, new scenes, and new options.

Notable changes:

  • Updated gender/orientation/presentation coding, with more options in character creation (has some effects as of Day 1, e.g. choice of swimsuit in gym.)
  • More conversations with characters and opportunities to make plans with some
  • Expanded home life sections for everyone (werewolf has only minor additions, goblin has a new experiment to work on, wendigo has more options for their day off; vampire and demon are not finished but new scenes have been added.)
  • The fight with Artemis or Hunter in sixth period is finished, with different options and outcomes by species. There’s about ten pages of code there, enjoy!
  • The first “Bad End” (the game ending early and unfortunately for your character, following a certain series of choices) has been written in. See if you can find it! (Hint: This first one is only for the wendigo.)

Still missing from Day 1:

  • Some of the lunch conversations (those that were missing before.)
  • Part of the nightlife scenes for demons or vampires, if they go out to a bar or club after school.
  • Place markers have been added for two new scenes in progress- a conversation with Wendy if you previously bonded with her at lunch, and a locker room scene at the beginning of gym.

Psst. There is an error if you try to play as the Wendigo, Demon, or Goblin.
The demo will not even start after you choose “Yep, that’s me.”
Stating: stat_cap line 1: Non-existent variable ‘game_started’
EDIT: The Vampire & Werewolf stop after you choose how you feel about being a monster.

Oh, sorry. There are three different versions of this scene by now, and the wrong one must’ve ended up in the demo folder. I’ll fix it.

Update: re-uploaded one of the scenes, everything seems to be working now. Everything up has passed quicktest, and early play-testing.

Challenge accepted.

By the way, now that we can choose our werewolf’s sport, my werewolf is going to play varsity Calvinball.

I like how you can now choose the sport the werewolf plays (I’ve understood why American Highschools were really big on football), although I don’t think Judo or competitive chicken wrestling would be good sports for a werewolf to play :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:.

@Hell_Satan
You have to grab your oponent a lot in Judo and chicken wrestling.

(Werewolves have claws… and fur… you know, that could be a problem.)

The werewolf would probably hurt someone in judo, or eat the chicken, to everyone’s horror.

Coach ‘Ed, where’d your chicken go?’

Ed the wolfdude (His mouth full of poultry) ‘Bidn’t ge one’

Couch (Looking very confused) ‘You sure?’

Ed the wolfdude ‘Yef-’ (He hiccups, a feather floating innocently from his mouth)

Coach (Backs away slowly)

Speciesism, I think you mean.

But werewolves do sometimes eat live chickens. And rabbits. And occasionally household pets, although that’s discouraged.

@Sashira While I still think that a werewolf scarfing a chicken would be hilarious (Make that happen, I demand it!!!), your post touched on what is probably the most interesting aspect of the story for me.

Monster’s morality, while rarely lining up with human morality, isn’t necessarily a lack of it. Questions about morality, and its inherent subjectivity, fascinates me.

I’m sorry werewolves… If I leave a roast chicken outside tonight, will that be a good enough peace offering?

I finally got around to reading this, and it’s really good! I look forward to seeing where this goes.

I also have to add, your writing style is fantastic. It’s really sharp and stays interesting. It’s obvious you’re putting a ton of work into this, so good luck!
