March 2021's Writer Support Thread

I hit the 2k without code.

It’s been more than a week and I still have that excited buzz going on. Anyway. I was able to get a keyboard and a new phone which is more than a win. I think.

I had finished writing a prologue, and two chapters. In addition to that, I wrote a short story.

I still have to rewrite them all, though. It’s so hard being a NNS. (non-native English speaker) :pensive:

What else? Right. I enjoy writing but I realized that fantasy just doesn’t stick with me. I can write fantasy one shots. I can come up with a crazy concept about an imaginary fantasy world. I can write detailed fighting scenes.

However, I can never follow through with them.

The saddest part is that, I think I was in denial for a long time without realizing it. What I truly love writing about is slice of life and feel good stories like, you know, romance. As cheesy and pathetic as it sounds, I enjoy it. It makes me happy.

That’s it. I hope you’re doing well this month. :purple_heart:

Hah, that’s true  By the end of this I’d know all about how various groups were viewed in the Russian Partition, nationalism in the Ottoman Empire, religion in the French Second Empire, attitudes of the French and Germans toward Alsace-Lorraine, and so on. That’s what I get with a giant cast, I guess?

Wow, I’ve never thought of it that way. But just off the top of my head real quick: Metropolis, Forbidden Planet, Soylent Green… you’re right! I do quite enjoy worldbuilding, seeing how different elements of a world work together and how everything has a (usually) logical explanation. Though in this project it’s ā€œisolate a bunch of Europeans with problems in the Saharaā€ so it’s really a lot of character history-building instead of world.

This is going to turn out darker and uglier than what I’ve originally envisioned (a straight adventure story) once I started grounding each individual character… But hopefully not so wrong that an actual historian’s going to find it funny.

Thanks for the support! I’ll be getting back to updating things soon, I hope!

That’s amazing, @poison_mara

Started the month strong, but flagging now. With a primary goal of 12k and a secondary goal of maintaining my 10k, 2,500 words on 3/9 isn’t going to cut it. Hope all of y’all are having a better go of it!

Now that i’ve posted the first updated im wondering if posting the second update this month is setting the bar WAY too high. It probably is.

I was just doing a playthrough of my wip via screen reader, and picked up a rather unfortunate typo.

It really makes a whole host of difference to hear ā€œscared dayā€ instead of ā€œsacred dayā€.

I started working on this a while ago, but I changed up a section and made it easier for me to code. Originally it sorted the reader into one of three routes based on how much they had to drink and then sorted them even further based on if they passed the skill check or not.

The intention behind including these skill checks was to get the reader used to the system, but I have a few instances where skills are being tested prior to this section. Plus it’s not a novel concept (stat checks), so I ultimately scrapped it.

Trying to creative all the varying narratives based on how well you did at your skills after the alcohol check was just a nightmare. I did some more math based on how much or how little you can drink and some of the variations would never even be seen unless you somehow broke the code.

Was a cool idea in theory, but in practice is didn’t land. I’m relieved I scrapped it though.

At least you have learned a lot of how design stats and mechanisms that you like. That is a win.

Haha! Yup!

Now the true test is if they work or not!

I am also putting my hand on some 1870 historical fiction. Are your characters all based on real ones? I started doing so and now decided to just take the setting and make up most of the characters to have a lot more freedom. I do feel your pain though.

Good luck, I wish I had the time

The first 10 days of March have been quite productive for me. Just finished the prologue 6k, and got about 3k in on chapter 1. At least this time I have the full structure in more details for the whole book worked out. Let’s see if I can keep this up and can show you something end of the month!

A good couple of writing days has finally pushed my prologue so far past the 10k mark! Considering that most stories I’ve ever written in the past rarely ever went above a thousand words, I’m quite pleased with it.

Now, I still have a title to figure out.

The one I’d initially settled upon unfortunately shares a name with an episode from Super Robot Monkey Team Hyperforce Go! Which is… uh…not ideal.

(The title was ā€˜The Sun Riders’ if anyone is curious).

Is this your prison break story?

No, they’re all fictional, so I’m not constrained by that. There’s not even a proper year to this, just an anachronistic mishmash of the entire 1880s. Maybe some real historic people are going to get mentioned in passing but they won’t show up.

No, that one is on hold for now. I need more experience coding for that to work.

I haven’t been able to work on my book for three weeks because of other commitments. But I’m back on it now, making a tentative start on research for the next chapter. I’m spending part of this evening submerged in some deeply weird reading about Nazi ā€œoccultismā€, for the purposes of research. That’s some crazy stuff! It’s a pretty weird rabbit-hole to fall down, but one of the reasons I like writing is that it sometimes forces you to read up on interesting obscure areas.

I just realized I haven’t set a goal yet for myself this month. :joy:

For now, I’m just aiming to get this chapter done with and upload an update. Like soon. Then create a tumblr and learn how to deal with it.
It’s my birth month so I might take it a little easy after that. And I’m also in the midst of applying for a job (hurray for that).

Fortunately, my streak of writing everyday still hasn’t been broken, though I had to get rid of certain portions along the way.

I really really hope I could finish this part soon. Getting very anxious about it lol.

decided to revise my story board as i felt i made that character building moment too small, if that makes sense. Other than that, i made 1k words on this chapter and that is better than nothing! (/ ā€˜w’ )/

Thank you for your kind words! I’ve also considered ā€œThe Light Ridersā€ as well but that also shares a name with another cartoon :joy: oh well. I may settle on one or the other, unless something else comes up.

Also on another note, I’m currently in a state where I’m second-guessing the quality of what I have so far. And fretting over whether or not it will even be well-received…
