Lux: City of Secrets - Book 3 of The Evertree Saga by Thom Baylay

Thank you!
This actually reminds me of my old LiveJournal commands.

Oh, and they totally lose it and pull an Adam/Ava and destroy the poor table if you change your mind last second! That was some absolutely scary shit! But in my opinion - YMMV, it’s a highly personal thing - this seems, at the end of the day, less cruel than dropping you and ending the “relationship”. To me, there is no greater punishment than total love withdrawal, with love being “love” in Hayden’s case.

Honestly? If I’m trying to put myself in Hayden’s shoes with everything I know about them … I personally don’t think they’ll ever respect the MC, because we (who romance them) ultimately give them no reason to. What kind of an idiot with a death wish, what a stupid little human or whatever your race is, do you even have to be to let them put you in manacles after they tried to kill you? After they themself have told you not to trust them and proven it? Heck, even the destiny clay warns you and cries itself to sleep at night! The only respectable AND self-respecting action is walking away from them yesterday. And the next best option is walking away from them today. Staying with them is the worst choice.
When everything is said and done, they will walk over my corpse and give all their respect to @JBento because by killing them he’s doing the only reasonable, respectable thing, and treating them like the worthy, respectable opponent they are. (They still shouldn’t be killable, of course)

Oh, totally! It makes absolutely sense from the in-universe perspective. It contributes to making them so damn scary and threatening. But I will always have mixed feelings about “be gentle” from a gamedesign pov. I really felt that impact, and it was just me messing around with all the left-over options at this point. I wasn’t even that immersed.

That’s interesting, I’d love to hear why!

I prefer talking in public so others can join in. :slightly_smiling_face: And I think discussing fan theories is perfectly fine in the actual official thread for that game. But if we’re violating any rules, I’m sure we’ll find out.

Back when I was writing fanfics I loved nothing more than reading in-depth discussions on my story and characters. But HisMMV. …And I haven’t even shared half of my thoughts. :sob: I’ve played that Lady Anya mission so often, my phone autocompletes “H” to Himo.

WHO DARES @ AT ME AND INCUR MY WRA- Oh, hey Winter, how’s it hanging?

They can keep their respect, I’ll take their life instead.

Oh, honey, dead people don’t walk.
“But what about zombies”, I hear you ask.
Oh, honey, there needs to be a corpse left for you to make a zombie.

Meh, you were going to spend them with Winter, so it’s not like you’re missing anything, really. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

This is patently untrue. I also spend quite some time in the AMR thread about how much I wanna smooch Yu and Flyss (and sleuthing out why gloomcat couldn’t hug Yu; sleuthing is fun), and I don’t wanna talk about a game that isn’t out yet, but once Relics 2 comes out I get to talk about smooching the goofball queen Dominique.

DON’T PUSH IT, WRITING THIS TOOK 10 YEARS OFF MY LIFE AND GAVE ME ACID REFLUX! I was SO nice here!!! You were ONE SINGLE TIME nice to me and now it’s only KILL - WINTER - MUST - KILL - WINTER - MUST - KILL from you like some… some… God, why do I have to do this in English? (Oh and because it’s the internet:  )

Here! My plans for the CoL demo! SCHOLASTIC FIRST STEPS BABY!!!

Whenever you know I’m close you switch to kill Winter mode!!! You know exactly that I’m dwelling in the basement of that “RO’s you hate” thread like some degenerate gnome! You know the words to lure me out and break my heart! You summon me, only to kick me back into the dirt! I COPY PASTED POETRY FOR YOU! I EVEN ADDED SMILIES!!!

I’ll get back to that later, I’m out of “witty comeback” juice. But look at my cute snowman! He knows, man! The snowman knows!

On Orion: His sex scene was so crazy and wtf just happened that I felt like he was kinda crazy for his religion/god. He is so serious and disciplined and then THAT happens and it was just too much for me. With Winter he tells you who he is from the get go.

By the way I never follow Winter in Sordwin. I do know if you do he stabs you. No way I would forgive that. Rough sex is one thing but trying to kill me I think not.

I didn’t think I’d be spending my day thinking of Winter. Now I want a MC that teases and pisses him off at every turn.

@JBento Bwaaahahahahahah, oh you should SO replay the game and decide to visit Imperion on day 3! This is sooooooooooooooo ruining your climactic showdown fantasies.   Here’s your climactic reunion with your arch nemesis!

Summary

Summary

Your good old foe! And you can’t even slap them! :joy:

Meeting them there even unlocks your relationship stats for them!

But, to be fair, that alone doesn’t invalidate your actual theory. So, here’s something that supports it:

Summary

I’ve also noticed something curious about the outfit “Cal” is wearing:

Summary

That is a strong case of “oddly specific” with a reference to sailing and something Winter would have access to - but then again, so would probably anyone else around Lux. The entire place the elf is using is obviously hastily set up, they don’t even have glasses and an overturned crate for a table. And yes, the guy DOES behave very Winter-esque.

I even googled the pseudonym “Calanon” they’re using, and it’s apparently an elf in LOTR which I’m not familiar with. I found this paragraph in some wiki

Summary

Trained by Finarfin to be a great heir, the young elf was taken under the look of numerous Ñoldors who made him discover the truth about his parents, Calanon choosed to leave his adoptive father’s realm to live on the shores by himself. He discovered interest in other lands and dreamt of Sailing on Middle Earth, starting to build his own ships.

That seems to be the only reference to ships and sailing, though. A deadend and totally getting into overthinking territory.

What speaks against this theory however is the nitpicky fact that Cal touches L twice. He cups his cheeks with his hands and later he holds his hands. That would be a stupid, careless and entirely avoidable move from Winter, because it is time and time mentioned again, how cold their skin is. Wouldn’t L - even if he didn’t know Winter and nothing about changelings - react to it in some way?

Btw, speaking of not knowing Winter: If you skip Sordwin, which I never thought of doing before, you STILL end up in the torture chamber with them if you visit Imperion that day, and you’ll get a new introduction scene (OMG MEETING THEM FOR THE FIRST TIME AGAIN!!!)

Summary

Why do Sordwin skippers get rewarded with a bright-haired Hayden and I have to put up with GREEN HAIR…DEN !!! :sob: :sob: :sob:

Summary

Argh and this is putting a major dent in my changeling thesis!!!

Very long story short: Seeing how the game is streamlined here (despite the Imperion visit being skippable entirely), I have a feeling Winter is going to be used for something bigger that concerns all players in some way - the dead mayor(s) case, more precisely. The alternative “outro of torture chamber” you get if you have skipped Sordwin seems to almost confirm Hayden is involved in this case (my personal first theory was that Winter killed Geoffrey, but I suppose that was everyone’s first thought). Their nature as changeling is focused on above all else. This is considered to be what new players REALLY need to know about them, their superspecial shape-shifting skills.

Summary

And given how the elf still messes with you and L if you haven’t met Winter and played Sordwin before - what would be their motivation there to go after L?

Sorry, my browser is messing up, I have to quote you this way:

> We save him from the terrible terrible mob, who, as a message over super-duper debt, only rough him up a bit, making them the nicest mob ever. I mean, if you’re not even going to break one of the bugger’s legs, is it really a message from the mob?

But Winter can heal, they surely wouldn’t be excited about it, but for a “greater cause” they probably could easily put up with a more severe wound for a while to make the show more believable.

@Cheezabelle

I’m with you there! All the time Orion’s like “if you stick a lump of coal between his ass cheeks in the morning, you have a diamond in the evening” while who knows what shit is boiling underneath and happily starting to stink! Yeah, definitely not for me either.

Mission accomplished. :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

I’m sorry, but I really couldn’t pay attention to that, too! ^^; Somehow, somwhere, someone (Imperion…?) mentioned things weren’t so great there. But Hayden’s obviously in no parallel universe stuck there.

Priorities!!! But… I already spoiled what happens. You run into Winter. Always, as far as I can tell. And it’s just a thing that happens. It’s beautifully unepic and there’s nothing you can do about it! :stuck_out_tongue:

If you skip Sordwin the Game, what happens in Sordwin the island? Does the game just ignore that Sordwin was ever a thing? Is Hayden ever stuck there waiting for the embargo to lift?

I can’t afford that! I’d need at least one extra action to do all the things I wanted to do as it is, because right now I don’t even have time to investigate the source of the poison past the apothecary!

One of the nightly newspapers will mention that Sordwin is still stuck under quarantine if MC skips Sordwin; it’s a much better fate than what happened to Evertree Inn though, because everyone there just straight up dies if you don’t stop by.

I did but no one replied to me yet its been 48 hours since I contacted them.

You could try sending a private message to a staff member Choice of games staff - Choice of Games Forum

To be fair, they seem to be based in the US, and you contacted them on the Friday afternoon before a three day weekend. It might take longer than normal to get back to you.

Aside from what Greyscales said, it is mentioned that you turned Imperion’s offer down, because you decided you didn’t want to work for someone like him. It’s also said in that newspaper article that the quarantine has lasted a month by now.

I just replayed the beginning again, and like before I skipped Sordwin, but this time I ended the relationship with Lamuel right at the beginning, because I wanted to see if I could have sex with Winter in the torture chamber then. And like I thought, it was possible, aside from the character introduction (which gives a very different first impression of their character, more of a mischievous prankster than the highly seductive pirate with dom energy) it basically played out the same, even with that one stomach-achey choice, so if you go for that (which is more likely under these particular circumstances), you will learn not to trust them VERY fast and very dramatically. But all in all, the whole scene almost felt like out of a porn, and while funny, I’m very, very glad I met Winter in Sordwin for the first time instead. And I highly doubt there’s many people out there who will see this scene organically, because there’s probably not that many who’d buy Evertree and Lux, but not Sordwin.
Edit: I’m extremely stupid, I didn’t take into account that you can start with Lux (without Evertree) and probably still get the same Hayden introduction

Other random thoughts:

My god, I can’t stand Kyran. With each unavoidable (due to replays) new first meeting my dislike grows stronger. There is something about him that makes it incredibly satisfying to be as mean to him as possible.

Can I also just say how much I enjoyed meeting Enra? Because they really put Hayden into perspective. Up until then Hayden was the only changeling we knew and that made it a bit hard to tell how much of them was a changeling-thing and how much their individual character.
But Enra, while still participating in a pretty f-ed up, inexcusable plan, is actually …nice. I’d love to drink a coffee with them and talk changeling things.

I’m undecided on K. At first I found them annoying, but eventually I decided to roll an unattached PC so I could give their romance a shot, and the date K takes you on is pretty amazing - I love how it varies depending on the background of the character you’re playing. I went on to make multiple different characters just to see the variations. But K is definitely up to something-or-other; I have a feeling we’re being played, and we may not know K very well at all, so I’m still wary.

I actually liked Kyran very much at first, his whole attitude, his appearance, and like you, I dated him in one playthrough and I absolutely loved what he did with the date! But it all feels too good to be true the entire time (and it’s strongly hinted at that it IS all too good), and then I went to the bordello (don’t read further if you don’t know what I’m gettting at) and it is revealed that he’s a sex worker there (which I generally have no issue with), and has been heavily involved in dealing with Devil’s Kiss / being the one getting Geoffrey addicted and taking advantage of him. Of course there could be twists and turns and Kyran isn’t entirely responsible or everything isn’t as it seems, and given that I’ve played this route only once I could also misremember details here.
But when I found this out I was just so… Maaaan, why can’t anyone just be nice and easygoing for a change without falling into overly romantic territory like Lamuel.
I guess, I was genuinely disappointed he was just another Luxican secrets-and-lies haver. And ever since, everything about him seems so fake and sleazy, I can’t even stand his piercing anymore. So it’s actually more than “something about him” I don’t like, I do have a good reason. But even if he was used himself (which I assume, because that’s how this world works), I doubt I can overcome this feeling of general ickiness around him again.

Btw I have a small theory that he is a mind reader

Ah ha, I did think K was probably a professional escort of some kind, but I’ve never gone near the bordello on any of my runs, so I never learned more. I’m still very curious to see what K is up to. It may all end in heartbreak, but you can probably say the same about O, and maybe even D and Gunther, but I’ve got characters for 'em all (two for O, which is just silly, someone stop me…).

You can also learn it from the bartender in The End of the Day where you hang out and meet Kyran.

With regards to my theory on Kyran: What speaks against it is obviously the fact that the text says “It’s like he can read your mind”, but the way he knows exactly what you want, where you’re from, etc. speaks for it. And not just that, I thought it would make sense for the mind reading to work only within a certain distance, so Kyran would have to be physically close to you. By getting Geoffrey addicted to Devil’s Kiss and him as a person, he would’ve been able to spy on him easily this way. And another hint: You meet Kyran at the post office where he’s coincidentally writing to his family too, just like you. In my case my surviving family member is my father. There is one path where Kyran throws his letter into the trash and the only thing I could read before the rest was erased was “dear father”. I thought Kyran was maybe actually at the post office to copy YOUR letter. To prove this, I would have to start over with a different surviving family member, I tried, but I don’t remember the choices that led me to be able to get a glimpse at the letter.
