Lux: City of Secrets - Book 3 of The Evertree Saga by Thom Baylay

In all of my playthroughs I was so immersed that I completely forgot I was supposed to look for glitches and bugs

Oh shoot! We were suppose to look for errors?

Haha, I mean if you’re too immersed to spot errors, that’s a good thing :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Regarding a regular save system. I’ll look into it. I know there’s functionality like that built into Dashingdon so if it’s not too difficult to implement (ie if it’s just something I can switch on :stuck_out_tongue: ) then I’ll do that. If it would require more coding, I’m afraid the time I have to dedicate to this book is limited at the moment and I’d rather use what time I do have on edits and gathering materials for final submission.

Thank you everyone for your continued feedback! I’m so glad you’re all enjoying it. Makes me want to get going with the next one right now!

A complaint and a typo I have about book 3, contains a few spoilers so caution is advised. Thank you for reading and aside from that, I really like the book especially how we’re diving more into our career now, going to be great showing everyone how good we are at what we do! Great writing as always!

Complaint:

I have gripes with Oriana’s route/missions, the main thing being that they take up WAY too much time. To compare, I did Leah’s route, I was able to do all of the career missions, look into the mystery (about three, going to the watch, confronting the captain and spying on him) and do Leah’s personal route (the one on the first day, not sure if there is one for second day). To compare Oriana’s route, the two missions took up entire days, the first one taking up three time slots and the second one taking up two time slots. So basically, I’ll compare and assign the two routes a number which is how many choices you can make with them along with how much the choices cost. Each choice has at least one slot and there are about three slots in a day

Alone/Evertree Companion: Six Choices to make

Your choice of completing

  • Your career (2 slots)

  • The mystery (3/4 slots?)

  • One RO moment (1/2 slots?)

You’re given a TON of time to do things if you’re alone or with another companion

Oriana: Three Choices to make

Your choice of completing (bolded is “mandatory” for her route)

  • Mission One, 3 slots (not negotiable, must use 3 slots for full RO (2.5 slots for second wind but not helpful))

  • Mission Two, 2 slots (not negotiable, must use 2 slots for full RO)

  • Your career (2 slots)

  • The mystery (3/4 slots?)

So that takes up five slots, that leaves one to use on either your career or the mystery (which you don’t even finish). I don’t like this as it basically forces whoever is romancing Oriana to miss a very large portion of the game along with losing out on stats and money from not going to your career as well as special rewards for solving the mystery in exchange for spending time with her. I even used the Second Wind item from the shopkeeper on the first mission, all that does is give you time to meet Kyra at the inn (which you won’t do because you’re going to stay back and talk to Oriana anyways). I don’t know how this would be balanced because it seems like her missions would indeed take a lot of time in real life to do, but I would at least like the option to have more time to either finish our career or get a good start into the mystery.

Typo/Glitch:

You return your lover’s kiss and the invitation brings a mischievous grin to her lips. Within moments your breeches are around your ankles, your arms raised above your head and your shirt tossed aside. You’ve never seen {lamuel_him} so assertive, and it feels good. Her fingers know your body, guiding and teasing you into a blissful daze.

I don’t think it should be {lamuel_him} especially when I have Leah

Oh interesting. I was wondering if it was even possible to complete the 1st event with O and still get back in time to meet D for their 1st night meeting. Also, I didn’t figure out how to use the Second Wind the one time I bought it🤷‍♀️ I wondered if that SW was key, or if I could otherwise manage time better with items/choices, or with a different path than through the forest as I took. I can understand challenging, but it’s an interesting choice of it’s truly impossible to accomplish anything else if you follow O’s routes.. Is it true, @ThomB? Is it just a challenge to puzzle out? Or actually impossible?

I’m not a code reader  sorry

I think the Second Wind is automatically used, no actions needed, when camping with Oriana/Orion, there’s a flavor text where you give it to your pony and no choice needs to be taken

It is possible to get back on time even without the Second Wind with the right items and choices. I also went through the forest and was able to make it (but it did take me a couple of tries to get it right lol)

My MC: Investigating the mayor’s death is my top priority!
Also My MC: *chases after every other mystery that crosses his path*

I also got the Slacker achievement for not following up on the MC’s career because my MC was too busy getting paid to investigate stuff in order to… follow up on their burgeoning career as an investigator? Still not seeing the conflict in interest for investigators here.

Also, I remember being able to meet up with Kyran at the tavern on the first day in an earlier draft of Lux, but I was completely unable to meet them at all in my various playthroughs this time. Do you to be flying solo (no companion at all even non-romantic ones) to meet them in this version?

Regarding a certain person’s route :

On the second day, I was able to make it back in time to do something during the evening without having to resort to using Second Wind by stampeding through the missing person investigation like a crazed hippopotamus. But yes, it’s odd that apparently saying “Okay, bye then” to Orion(a) would take up the entire evening slot instead.

On the third day, perhaps a compromise could be made by allowing the player to leave the cultist’s headquarters early enough to free up the evening slot without completing tanking the relationship with Orion(a)? Especially as Orion(a) had been pushing pretty hard for the MC to escape the place, but if you actually take their advice and leave, your relationship drops to 39. Talk about mixed signals there.

Problem with a compromise in Day 3 is that you wouldn’t be able to get Orian/Oriana’s “romance scene”, maybe it would help out for people who don’t care much about Oriana (to go for her RO) but for those going her path, sadly, they’re going to miss out on that and will have to decide between having some extra time or getting closer to O. Maybe along with the compromise, you could sneak in another kiss with them if you’re leaving to balance out the sacrifice of missing out on their RO scene. Otherwise, it’s still a bit of a lose-lose situation for O Shippers

Who said you have to go on the day 3 mission to pursue O romantically?
I appreciate the observation that romancing O takes time, but this was intentional. It shouldn’t be a surprise that O will require a lot of time and effort to get close to (and that their words and stats are sometimes contradictory  )

The purpose of this book is to challenge the MC with too much choice. No two options are created equally. Some take a lot of investment, some can be finished in no time at all. Whatever you choose, there will be more story, but I leave those choices up to you. And if Lux leaves you feeling like you didn’t have enough time to do all the things you wanted to do…sorry, not sorry

(Reminder: if you have feedback from your play through of the beta, please can you put it in an email or a DM. It’s easier for me to go through it systematically that way. I cannot guarantee that I will spot or respond to anything posted in the thread.)

I actually refused to do that protection mission (day 3) and still got O showed up at the apartment

I’ve just played it and I loved It. I haven’t found errors or something that I don’t like so far. There is so much choices that was difficult to made up my mind on what to do. But it is the beauty of your story. It feels like your choices really metters, and like you’re living a real adventure!

I didn’t do this mission, and Orion showed up anyway.

I actually didn’t know you could just not do the third mission and still have a moment with O :0

Well that certainly gives us a lot more time to do things, still can’t complete the career missions due to the first one taking all day but I’ll take it! Thank you for clearing things up! I was thinking “why would you not go with O for the missions if you’re going to miss out on having an RO scene?” and feeling forced to use too much time for their RO, I didn’t know that you’d still see them again later. I was assuming it would just be “days over, lets get some rest”. Nice to know we can still get some time to spend with O, and to be honest, I kind of like how this one flows better than the one in the second mission.

ah yes, the classic heartwrecking slowburn… :pensive::ok_hand:

I mostly only do that mission because we can kill a god ( even though it’s a minor one )

I don’t think the shop discount is working. I bought the manastone and the spyglass still the same price as before. Unless that’s as intended?

The shopkeeper will only give you a discount if you buy 4-5 items ( I don’t know if item’s price affect this or no but I got my first discount after buying a bunch of minor items so I guess not ) and I remember that they will only give you discount for one item

Did anyone ever figure out the mutant orc’s name when searching for Imperion’s daughter? I feel like all the clues I’ve found should definitely add up to something, and I sort of understand some of what’s going on. Maybe I missed something important.

Oh yes, there are a couple ways to learn the mutant orc’s name! One of them I felt nearly had O thrusting a sign of it in MC’s face :smirk: It was so obvious, I felt like a dumdum for not copying it down the very first time

Try offering antivenom to the woman that has snake bite in the city of Dree. Might clear up some things!
